  • Relegated to the margins of political life during Caesar's dictatorship, Cicero dedicated himself to the study of philosophy and personal reflection.
    Writing is very important because even literary works can benefit the ruling class; writing becomes the new form of ethical-political regeneration. The author's intent is twofold: to attribute to Latin culture the same value as Greek culture and to spread Stoic philosophy among the Roman public. The otium is not an abstract moment of pause away from active life but the other aspect of the political and social usefulness of the good civis romanus.
