This one time, an asshole showed me a video from Scott’s Basslessons saying I shouldn’t play fretless, and another one saying I ought to only use a Fender P-Bass, but I noticed that Scott played 5-stringy strings & fondly interviewed fretless players
Fuck that asshole & his presuppositions, unsure if edgy clickbait titles caused him any confusion 🤔

Hello! Ive been playing upright for 10 years now, and what really helps a lot for me is having a constant tone to play with and get in tune to before moving on to the next one. Once you can do that you do it with rhythm (but slow ofc) before getting it faster. eventually intonation will come naturally, but it can take some time

I have a fretless which has lines, but I never really look at the lines and just use the ends of the fret markers.

It sucks when you can't afford frets :) Jk. Beautiful sounds. I fists consciously recognized the fretless bass on the track Energy Fools The Magician by Brian Eno. Percy Jones plays at least two tracks of bass on it. I was in fifth grade at the time. It was in the late 70s and information was more difficult to obtain. I didn't know what the sounds were being made by, but knew I had to make those amazing sounds. And I did.

Try learning the upright bass claw technique, then apply it to fretless. It works for me. Ring finger & pinky stay together as one with your first finger stretched out. After the 12th fret don't use your pinky anymore. The rest is all ear & muscle memory.

Except, in this presentation of a 5ver, after the intro where she used the E and A, she did most of the song on the D & G strings; if she’s in standard tuning. She didn’t touch the 5th string. Only two of the five strings.
Most fiver bassist seldom hit the lowest string. Therefore, us four string bassist can easily use the fiver as a four-string bass. We can occasionally hit the 5th string for an accent. It’s a pretty deep, and sometimes muddy sound when the B or 5th string is used.
Thursday, I jammed with my fiver, and it was ok. It’s a G&L 2500. After I played a couple of songs, I set it down and picked up my inexpensive but modded Bronco. Ahhh, much better.
