Do pedals intrigue you, but you don’t really know where to start? FEAR NOT. We’ve got 5 pedals Ian recommends that have everything you might need to kick off your FX journey!
I just got a Boss CH-1 today and it's one of the best things I've ever bought, with distortion it makes it sound like ghosts are trying to escape your amp sometimes
To me, the most "must have" is a compressor. You can build everything else around it (except for velocity effects, put the velocity effects before the compressor).
And it’s all wayyy better if you split the signal with an ABY pedal, send one side through the OC5 to the bass amp and the other side through the rest of the pedals and through an HPF into a guitar amp.
Me, in order: • Empress Bass compressor (expensive but worth it!) • Digitech Drop detuner pedal (due to high maintenance singer, but it does have an octaver too) • Sans amp VT deluxe that's still kicking • I'm all good with just those!
Depending on what you do, but if I was a beginner I'd buy a boss katana go since it has everything you need in terms of pedals in something you could put in your pocket & use your headphones. I also have a boss katana bass amp with the same set of features. So no need for purchasing pedals at all unless you still like stomping on blocks of metal😂🎉
Got myself a chorus just today! I'm trying to tell myself I don't need more pedals and this ain't helping... I especially don't need the octave... (if I keep telling myself that it'll become true)
Actually the only "essential" pedal you need is a tuner. And everyone saying "but my comp pedal" is the reason we live in what I call the Great Compression. If you want to compress your guitar or whatever, go ahead. But if you're using a compressor pedal on bass, just turn it off. If you're recording and MUST have your compression, just do it in the daw or with some high-quality analog effects. If you're playing live, please for the love of God leave the comp pedal at home. Compression should always be handled at foh when playing live. And 90% of sound engineers are gonna have no idea how to make good tone happen when you send them over-compressed bass signal anyways. Hell, most of them couldn't find good tone if it was slapping them in the face. I've heard some truly horrific mixes on the road, and a huge factor is the bass being weak, mid heavy, and compressed til there's no tone or soul remaining.
I respectfully disagree. I use a TC Spectracomp and can change it on the fly with the tone print. A multiband comp can do tons for your tone and how you cut through different mixes, bands, rooms, and live situations. Soundmen thank me too.
Might be less flashy but I’d say the most essential pedals are a compressor and a preamp
I think he's giving FX tips to people who are already satisfied with their clean tone, which most likely will include compressor and a preamp.
I was gonna say compressor and noise gate!
Can you do a video demoing these effects so we can hear how they sound? Please and thank you!
6 - Tuner 7 - compressor. 👍🏻
No compressor pedal with bass, let them handle that at FOH or on console fx if it's recording. It will sound far better that way
My board: compressor, octave, envelope filter, bit crusher.
All of them together make an incredible synth sound that I wish I had more use for
I love my morley Fuzzy Wah, its just what i want in a bass pedal, one i get a chorus my bass set will be set

Tuner, comp, preamp, fuzz, oct and boost/filter
I heard about zvex back in like '05...
Great video. Please do a video on order of pedal set up
MXR chorus with flanger on + octave + light distortion + heavy compression allows me to sound like the bass synth I have that I hate dragging around.

Line6 m 5 or zoom b1 can help you find your individual pedal.
Octave, compressor, chorus, tuner, fuzz that's all you need

Besides a Radial preamp and an Empress comp, I go MXR Bass Octave Deluxe, Devi Ever Hyperion, Guyatone Wah Rocker, SansAmp VT Bass and Eden Chorus.
👍👍👍
The only pedal I need is a compressor, and even saying "need" is overstating it.

Compressor, compressor, compressor, compressor and preamp
that's a lot of compression! 😅😅😅
Source Audio Spectrum is a goated bass pedal - envelop filter, octave and fuzz all in one. Also Midi with 128 presets
Metal Zone> Metal Zone> Metal Zone
Awesome, how would you chain them to maximise the sound?

Unfortunately, I think you forgot the two most important pedals on your pedalboard as a bass player. A tuner, and A compressor.
Big Muff second version
What about compression?
What about looper pedals? How does the SBL team feel about those?
We love them! Fantastic practice tool!
Basstortion rules
No compression pedal?!

Bass guitars need to sound like bass guitars!
Why?
the effects you need are on your hands. fingers. thats all you need.
Depends on the music you want to play!
You could buy a new bass or a better amp with all the money you’d spend on those pedals.
