Today we get to try out another BMW! This time it's a 2015 BMW R Nine T and I am too excited to try this thing out. The looks are super retro and cool and it has BMW's Boxer engine which should be really fun to try out!

I own the scrambler version of this bike. Itâs hard to compare this bike to others because itâs not what you expect of a modern motorcycle, almost the opposite. But thatâs the beauty of it. Plenty of character, beautiful sounds, and timeless looks. In the 6 months of owning mine, Iâve gotten more compliments on it than all my other vehicles combined in my lifetime. Not saying that I bought it for compliments, but it is a widely appreciated bike with a famously reliable motor.
Itâs sex !
I own a 2020 r ninet. Perhaps they changed some things. But my experience is completely different from yours. I love that machine. Itâs so rugged. Filled with style, charm. Itâs not a sportsbike and doesnât maneuver like a sport bike, nor does it have the power or speed of a sport bike. Itâs something else. But itâs extremely fun to ride. I have a hard time getting off from it. The torque is soooo sweet, gives me what I demand when ever I want it. I find it very powerful and Gives me extreme confidence on turns. Itâs heavy but is so manageable. Itâs funny cause I feel youâre talking about a complete different bike then the one I have.
Very same here. Have ridden the 2020 model (which I know own) and tested the 2023 (Euro 5 compliant) model. None of what is said in the video was in line with my experience, but then I come from rather simple, old bikes (Moto Guzzi V7, Ducati Monster, HDs, Yamaha SR500,...). So what I look for is a bike with good power, lots of torc, and, most importantly, a character that puts a smile on my face.
That is why I bought exactly that bike!
Goes to show that a motorcyclist with a lot of followers on YT doesn't necessarily know much about motorcycles.
Heâs doesnât no fuckall all them parts are official bmw accessories
You have no clue of how the Boxer engine characteristic feels and vibrates.
You obviously donât know, people who do know about this classic shake, know what Iâm talking about.
Youâre right. Itâs the best damn feeling in the world. Makes you feel like a man riding a real vintage motorcycle, just a pure machine. The way they were made before there were all this new gadgets. And the oil smell that comes out of it when the bike is warmedâŠ. Delicious.
Gotta say I've never heard such negative words about this bike. I'm actually pretty sure I've never seen a review from a CZcamsr who didn't love it. It's Great your happy to share your opinion and be honest about how you feel, however going off this it might be safe to say you may just be the furthest thing away from whom this bike is for.
OC. Chase youâre right about a lot of things here. Itâs not the most confidence inspiring bike as the stock suspension is a bit more unsprung, gearbox is not the smoothest, power delivery lacks in relation to itâs displacement, torque steer & vibrations, lack of electronics & rider aidsâŠbut these sorts of things is what gives you such a visceral riding experience with this unique bike. It humbles you as a rider with it being so analog, & once you understand how to ride it, it rewards you with smiles for days. It makes you feel like a hero carving it up in the mountains & quite frankly has made any other bike Iâve ridden feel like a breeze. Itâs def the prettiest (subjective) bike Iâve owned. But still wish BMW wouldâve put a fuel indicator on this. Ride safe man đ
The day I need to press a button when it starts raining is the day I give up riding because I know I shouldn't be on the road.
Great job selling the used bike to a prospective customer. Before shitting on the R9T do some homework on it. Obviously itâs not the bike for you, but tens of thousands around the world would disagree.
80 ft lbs of torque is very good and 110 hp is perfect for the street. You didnât like it but lots of people do. It was released for BMW motorcycle 90 year anniversary. It a old school cafe racer. You have to have nostalgia for old bikes when riding it. If you like modern sport bikes with tons of electronics, Iâm not surprised you dislike it.
I feel like he was expecting a 1200 cc superbike
Lots of posters have already said it - with the R NineT, BMW were going got that raw, visceral old school riding experience with bare minimum of rider aids (2015 v1 just has ABS). In my opinion, it delivers that in spades. Then again, I've only ever ridden retros so I don't know what I'm missing. Personally, the things you hate are the things I love...the noise, the tug of the shaft drive, the low weight makes cornering very responsive, slightly agressive riding position, etc. I find the gearbox smooth, compares well with the Kawasaki I have. Horses for courses, I guess.
This bike fills a niche for those who donât want to fix up a 1970âs bike and turn it into a cafe racer. Competes with Triumphs, Harley Sportsters and Royal Enfield Int 650
No competition to Triumph's. Triumphs are brilliant and amazing
@@rl_31123as I learned later in my journey
OC. Really disappointed with how you can make a video which is pure negativity. It's not designed to be a 200bhp sportbike, it's a retro bike with a classic BMW boxer engine which is full of character. The entire point of the engine is that it has a lot of vibration and pulls the bike to the side when you rev it. I had use of one for a whole week while my s1000rr was having some work done to it and I loved the thing so much that I'm seriously considering buying one. I'm sorry fella but I've never been this annoyed watching one of your videos before. Regardless of what bike you do a review on, there's no need to be negative for an entire 28 minute video with not a single positive/constructive thing to say. I feel like I've just wasted half an hour of my life watching this.
This!
Me to i own a 2020 R Nine T this is my 2nd managed 6 mins and turned off he talked pure negativity i think he needs to do his homework on what the bike is all about.
All that negativity and yet it kicks the shit out of anything from Harley outside of the live wire
Bad is bad ;)
Ok Karen relaxđ...it will be ok I promise
I own a '17 R9T. You got a lot of things right, the seat sucks, the suspension is not the best, the brakes are solid and the riding position is good. But its got loads of torque, maybe not enough top end power, and I have no issues with weight or CG and I can push the bike hard through corners, I think you just need to get used to it. I love the exhaust note (I have the stock exhaust) and the burbles on decel sound awesome. Im always getting thumbs up from people for the looks of the bike. It def not the best bike on the road, but its rides as unique as it looks.
OC.... Chase this must have been the 1st time you ever rode a bike with that motor combo....the little shaking and rotating feel as you twist the throttle is how they feel... the bike is a nod to the people that love the retro styling and the heritage of bmw... its a horizontally opposed air cooled twin.... they don't make gobbs of power... the suspension on that model is known to be very soft from the factory. I personally feel you did this 1st ride wrong by comparing it to the new bikes like the s1000/r/rr . try next time to keep your mind opened, and compare it to its competition, rather than from a different planet. it's a beautiful looking bike, very retro inspired.. I'm also not a fan of that engine, but I get why it's used in that model...heck an '87 gsxr 1100 only made 125hp; 78ft/lbs and if you try to compare it to a late 2000's model 600/1000 you wont be able to see that its a cool bike for what it is....all im saying
love the 1st rides and the other vids brudda
I usually really look forward to your reviews. Production quality and effort you put into the final product is amazing. However I have never been as annoyed watching one of your videos as I am now. You completely missed the point of this bike. You went wrong when you started comparing it to the run of the mill retro or naked bikes. Itâs not a super sport or a super naked or even a muscle bike. Stop looking for those characteristics in it. If you didnât enjoy it then thatâs fine, each to their own. But this video was a waste of time.
Poor Chase - although you can race this bike, itâs not a race bike. You buy this bike purely for character. Itâs also a completely different ride compared to most bikes due to the flat twin engine. Itâs completely analog and you have to want that.
When I hear someone say character, it makes me feel like the bike just looks cool, might sound cool, but is deficient in the riding experience
Worst review ever. Honestly I donât know what bike you rode. It canât be the same as my rNineT. Iâve only ever seen very positive reviews of this bike. Itâs like you decided in advance you werenât going to like the bike.
damn I didn't realize this was an RnineT roast session, my dad has one and I ride an sv650 and I've ridden it a handful of times and its such a cool experience with the boxer twin vibration and twisting on throttle
The bike looks mad small.
@@AkaBull They're tiny.
@@gerardmontgomery280 Yeah it really does look that was.
OC. '21 R Nine T owners here. Had an '08 R1200 GS also. You are a bit off on some of this. Especially if you are looking at displacement. The boxer has always been a middling performer, but should have good delivery with a good torque band. The R Nine T is sold to two main kinds of buyers. First, the well funded hipster who wants a cafe-like ride without building an actual cafe racer or retro bike. This guy may not have the skill or time to put into a retro build. The second buyer is someone who wants to use this as a platform to build a modded bike and loves the boxer. I am the second. The bike reminds me of the simplicity of an old 750 Nighthawk with better power. I weigh in at almost 250 and have no problem getting everything I want from mine. Compared to the other retro themed bikes, I find it on par or better than most. Triumph, Ducati, and MotoG all have models in this segment and are generally within the same price and performance envelope. No matter what you do with one, they are primarily a retro novelty that can be built up into something quite fun. Never going to be a top performer in any way, but they are not intended to be that. By the way, that boxer shake at idle is a thing but I never notice it in motion. So, there IS a strong market for them. BMW has sold about 90,000 of them I think. Often they are the second bike and are like having an old Mustang that you take out for fun and attention. Mine gets a ton of attention and is a blast to ride. But, I like a bike that requires intentional, decisive input, which is absolutely true of this bike.
Your description about the handling makes it sound like you have low air pressure on the tires!
Just a small piece of info here.
BMW launched the R nine T in 2014 for their 90-th anniversary (which was in 2013) and they planned to produce and sell about a 1,000 of them.
It's 2023 as I'm texting this and it is nine and a half years of production of this model and there are FIVE sub-models of it!
Almost ten years of production and five versions.
I got to demo one and instantly fell in love with it. The low speed handling was obviously good with that boxer engine and it was great on some light twisties.
This is literally one of the best bikes on the market. I don't think you really know what you're talking about, or really know how to ride either. There are an infinite number of videos describing this bike way better. I'm really getting the feeling you don't know how to ride a motorcycle.
Man I donât know what to say but you are wrong about almost everything. I know this because I own a 2019 version.
You said ride is soft - no itâs not itâs very stiff ride
You said itâs slow - wrong again SRK motorcycle tested it for 0-60 and got less than 3.1 sec. How is that slow. Power delivery is absolutely linear in 3,4,5,6 gears where you will find yourself most of the time. Styling is subjective so wonât say anything, I personally bought it almost on the looks itself.
That side to side shake is due to opposing boxer engine design and it is unique. Bike gets smoother and smoother as you catch more speed. Brakes are absolutely great.
Man I need whatever you are smoking.
Chase, I own a â21 R NineT. The suspension feels much more refined than what you are experiencing with the early version. The â21 also has ride by wire, introducing ride modes which make a great difference even though it still doesnât have gobs of power. With that being said, huge power is not the point of this bike. The shake of the engine on rev is typical of boxer bikes, and in this platform is an experience rather than the smooth delivery youâd expect from the s1000r, rr and m bikes. I recommend you try the newer version, as well as test it with an open mind on BMW bikes. This motor, though polarizing to ride, is really the history of BMW and the bike itself a homage to that.
By going on about the rider aids on the new version I fear you too are missing the point of this bike completely. Thereâs a GS if these are the type of things you desire
What are you talking about. I didn't say anything about rider aids. Ride modes is strictly for engine power and throttle response.@@johnlaw5762
OC: You are OFF on this bike. Please don't review another boxer engine BMW. You clearly don't understand them. Stick with Japanese bikes with inline 4s...
OC: Give that review to Beau â€ïž another time. Like many others commented you canât compare an air/oil cooled retro style bike to a modern engine. Then you where wondering whoâs it for. Well I donât go for more power I go for character and uniqueness in a bike and it looks like thatâs exactly what bmw are aiming for with this bike. A smooth power delivery is considered great to me. BTW: I own a 1986 Kawasaki ninja 600R and a 1971 Harley Shovelhead they both have many things I love about a bike. And I know youâre really not a cruiser fan. But I think this R9T is a sporty retro cruiser and is meant that way. I think your review overlooked that because you donât have much experience in that category.
Canât tell you how much I enjoyed this bike. Rented one on twisted road recently and it was most definitely quirky but I loved every second of it. Not the same engine used in the gs though
I bought a 2022 pure for my first motorcycle to learn on and I love it, I love how when you start the bike it pulls to one side, I like that it's "shaky", I was a little concerned since it's just a whole lot of bike but the fact that it doesn't pull a lot whole of power settled my nerves a bit. I love it's style especially since modding my own. It took me a few rides to build confidence but now i love zipping around town in this thing and occasionally going on the highway and the sound I love it. I Originally wanted a ducati nightshift scrambler which I got to test and after riding the rninet it makes riding bike like the nightshift cake. BTW nightshift is đ„
Would not change mine for any other bike. Add a DKdesign front fairing that add even more of that retro look and helps for wind on highways. Suprised about the handling review as I love the large stock handlebar control. I believe 1st gear is a little short when in town or traffic (especially when riding with common cruisers like HD), but is just ok when opening it for a straight. Plenty of power in my opinion. Engine brake is just fine when you rev it enough.
OC. I demo rode one and really enjoyed it. I'm not sure if that one has some mods to make it different compared to factory. I guess I'm a little odd, đ. One thing I really liked was while riding at 70mph on the highway there was no wind pressure. It was like there was an invisible fairing. Some bike just don't jive with the rider.
Something's wrong with that bike. The bike should have way more power then that. I think the bike has been tinkered with. First clue is the aftermarket exhaust. Who knows if they chipped it or didn't chip it and added an air intake. My stock 2020 RnineT flies.
Sure it's an air-cooled twin. And if you're coming from pretty much any 4-cylinder bike it's going to feel slow. But this bike moves and has really good torque. In my opinion...
But I think you should ride another one if given the chance.
Its air cooled so you have to compare it to more "classic" bikes like Harley's. (Edit: Air cooling really limits piston and cylinder shape in a way that is not power advantageous). Just a BMW cafe racer aimed at people who wanted them when they were younger and hipsters.
I bought 2023 Pure 2 months ago and put 1400miles city on it. I love every minute on it and try to find a reason to ride it. Amazing lean angle and sound. It does feel like an old school bike with a hint of modern. Coming from a Honda cruiser which was extremely reliable but clunky and I could never find N on that thing the BMW is just amazing machine. Well, I love German cars so that also adds up :)
I've read 0-60 is around 3.4s....doesnt seem underpowered to me!
2,8 even i believe? So yeah, either way definitely not on the slow end lol
I have an R nine T urban G/S myself. The R nine T is not ment to be "Fast.. smooth or flashy".. It's a bike with character. So yes it has a clunky gearbox, no wheely power or flashy new LCD screen. But you get a ton of character back like the shaking to one side engine (because it's a boxer). It's one of the more torque heavy motorcycles i have ridden ever.. all the power is in the low RPM range. Maybe the R nine T you rode was very shitty lol.. Because i had an R125, CBR600, CBF600, NC, VFR800X and i enjoy the R nine T over all the bikes i have ever ridden. Also steering/handling wise..
Give the R nine T another chance.. but not a 2015 model. Try a 2018 Urban G/S or Scrambler..
The R nine T you rode looks very weird power / performance wise.. Bad service or engine troubles or ex rekt bike?
The pulling to one side is from the flywheel not because itâs a Boxer. The modern LCâs donât pull the same which is why itâs so awesome in the RnineT.
Hey Chase, I have a 2019 R9T and I love it. Mine has plenty of engine braking and no issues with engine. The shaking is due to the boxer engine.
I love the R9T, but I'm waiting until I can find one that's had a suspension upgrade... or I can pay for the upgrade myself. They're notoriously undersprung and I'm much heavier than you. Also, air cooled motors don't have the ability to put out as much power as liquid cooled motors. Look at the air cooled Monster 1100s. They just barely scraped 100hp by the end of production.
I've had sports bikes most of the time (from ZX10R, R1, R1000, CBR1000RR), and some bikes with crazy power. Of course not everyone will agree with me, and I'm not implying that you should, but at one point I felt like I'm riding bikes to get the satisfaction from speed instead of enjoying the ride itself. I can understand why Chase is saying all that about the bike, but in my opinion you might be jumping to conclusion too fast. Like many others say, this bike is probably not meant to create tons of power or speed. Not everyone's a fan of the taste of what it gives, but it does have a very distinctive feel to it. Despite the negatives, it's hard to compare to any other bikes on the market - at least for now.
Just like any other genre of bikes, you have to like to feature it concentrates in order for you to appreciate it.
Some might say sports bikes are all in favor, but to some ppl it may be just a super fast but uncomfortable, high maintenance, sensitive, show off bike.
If someone said supersports are just for tracks, and they suck at commuting hence it sucks, it wouldn't make ton of sense either.
So it all comes down to what you look for when you ride a bike imo.
For me, it's enough power and torque to ride in the city as well as the long tours, and also enough for commuting.
Yeah the seat's not super comfortable, and yes it doesn't have all the electronic supports, yes it's not giving me power like it did with my sports bikes. But I do appreciate the distinctive feel of the engine, even the vibration. I also do appreciate the looks, seats are comfortable enough for me. Not to mention this bike can be modified in to lots of different looks. The engine is proven to be solid and without much trouble through the years as well. Just changing the handle bars to clip ons and adding a front pairing can make it look so much different.
Exhaust wise, like you said, it serves as you favor. Some like it, some don't. I like the stock exhaust too, not too loud but it makes a good sound considering it's stock. It all depends what sound you favor.
Power delivery - like I said, if you're looking to buy this bike for it's power, you're at the wrong place. I don't think people who look for classic looking bikes are buying it for the power at all, as long as it gives enough power to take over lanes and accelerate when desired.
Overall, I just think if you give it more miles on it, and open your heart and try to see it from the view of people who'd look for retro looks you might find it different (may or may not). I've watched your videos many times, most of the time I'd like to agree but this time I feel like this first ride was a bit hard to agree on. Also you find this bike if you're a fanboy of naked bikes from BMW with a retro look, this might be the only one to consider, but I don't agree with that. Also you seemed confused of who the target is, but in my opinion it's because people who buy this bike has a very specific need, not much bikes can give what this does. Not to mention the amount of this model being sold over the years. I may be wrong, but what I heard was that - originally it was to celebrate the anniversary, may be a farewell gift model to part with air-cooled boxer engines, but because it was so popular it was added to their line ups.
Oh btw, I do have pros and cons, I'm not trying to say this bike is perfect or anything. I don't believe any bike can be perfect. You can't have it all imo lmao. It was fun watching the video, thanks :)
Any BMW models with the R nomencature are raw by design. You will experience the same sensation on an R18.
Hi Chase. The engine is oil/air-cooled. They refer to these as "oilheads." The air-cooled BMW engine is a thing of the past. I think many of the things you dislike about the bike are owner mods.
Yup it seems to me like someone just horribly cocked this particular bike up. The RnineT is a fantastic albeit very visceral experience.
Nice looking bike. Iâm actually looking to get this model 2015 RNT with a very good price now.
Been watching for years and Iâve never been this early.
Chase doesn't like cafe bikes with character...got it.
I've rode those... Yours seems slow... I don't remeber it being that sluggish at all
OC: Swung a leg over one at a BMW dealer and wasn't all that excited about it. I agree that the bike looks the business as far as a café racer/retro look goes though.
Trade my 2017 765 rs for 2021 r nine t, love every minutes of it.
The main great thing about it is it'll make you look cool af as you ride around town. Not many other bikes out there that are as cool looking imo.
OC - you are off with the motorcycle đ. I have the 2021 model. Love it! Hasnât changed much since the 2015 model. Needs a rear suspension upgrade, probably need to do my sag settings. But hey I find it pretty cool and easy to ride, steering response isnât bad actually. A lot more comfortable in riding position then super sports bikes, but canât really compare this to S1000RR or R or a Ducati Panigale. These are one of the oldest boxer engines around producing 80kw or something air cool means less power too. The GS is semi water cooled to increase the power on this.
Probably need to ride this again with a grain of salt. But none the less good to hear an honest new rider opinion. Cheers and thanks.
Wow! What are the odds! I just recently crashed my motorcycle and have been looking at an R9T as a replacement. But most of the reviews are from other channels that I don't follow (nothing against them).
This is perfect timing
How funny I crashed my R9T pure last October đ€Ł. I loved the bike and would buy it agsin in a heartbeat
@@hunterbromson1562 I crashed my street cup last weekend.
What did you love about it? Just curious.
@@chaseontwowheels I'm a videographer myself so the higher production level is something that I like about your channel.
@@chaseontwowheels the later models had a lot more engine breaking to it. I loved the old school feel of the bike. It was really smooth going from curve to curve but had great power when I wanted it. Funny thing is after I crashed it the first bike I looked at was an MT-10 and that's what I plan on getting
You got this one horribly wrong mate. You went in expecting supernaked performance but this is a classic bike that offers tones of low end grunt and torque everywhere. They are also raced, that addresses lack of handling.
It sounds like the rear suspension was set waaaaay to soft for your weight. They steer quite well actually.
The problem with reviews is that they are subjective. There are no bad motorcycles, some just arenât right for the individual.
I personally had never ridden an R nineT. When I did I was very impressed, to the point the point I sold my Hypermotard SP to buy one.
Itâs been smiles ever since. I absolutely love the BMW. I canât stand all the âtechâ. Motorcycles, to me, need to be raw and fun.
Lastly, when I hear someone complain about handling, it makes me wonder what air pressure they were running or if it was checked at all. Every bike Iâve ever owned or ridden handles poorly if the tire pressure is low. To make sure, I think reviewers should add the tire pressure they are using to their ride notes.
Curious, what is your favorite motorcycle?
Yes, it's only got 110hp but also has a heap of torque and low gearing so it accelerates quite well - 0-60mph in 2.8-3.0s is hardly slow, but it does lack top-end power at speeds above about 100mph. But that's not what this bike is about - it makes you really feel connected to the bike in a way that most bikes these days don't. You obviously didn't get to try out the handling in this video riding only dead straight roads, but it feels very stable in corners and can keep up with anything else out there in tight mountain twisties on the road and is even fun to ride and goes alright on the track. The steering is a little slow and the bike requires you to move your body to get it to perform at its best - you really need to hang off the bike and use your body to muscle it around - that's a huge part of the fun of riding this bike. The suspension is not great and the bike benefits from a taller rear shock to both smooth out the ride, speed up the handling and also improve ground clearance. Dragging knee is super easy on this bike and it'll pop wheelies (albeit not great for them due to it's front-weight bias) as well while looking like a million bucks all day long. What more could you ask for in a bike?
Wow this is the first negative review of this bike in 6 years are you missing something bro!!!
Please compare it to the older air cooled Ducatis and Harley 1200 Sportsters. Air cooled engines do not make the power that liquid cooled multi-cylinder engines do. My fatherâs Buell XB12 Firebolt makes 103 horsepower which is way more than the Sportster. They canât all be CBR1000RR-R SPs or Streetfighters after all. The R9T looks like fun.
They are incredibly fun if you like a bike with character. Especially if you like to master the machine.
Chase, I always like the videos. Keep up the good work. I had a 2013 R1200R (same engine) and it took a little getting used to but I learned to love it. I'm not sure why I ever sold it, really. Regarding the lack of power, there must have been something wrong with this specific cycle. That 110hp engine on the R1200R really would get up and go very well. I would compare it to the Bandit 1250S I had years ago. Not a real rocket, but certainly fast. You keep making the videos and I'll keep watching.
Looked at them. Too short and squatty for my 6â3â frame. Bought a Desert Sled as my fun around town bike. Couldnât be happier
Blinkers and seat cowl are OEM BMW parts Chase.
Good to know. Thanks for the heads up.
Shake comes from the fact that you have two huge 600cc engine boobs slapping left and right. The last owner bastardized that bike.
The pure models give a more upright riding position.
Power is linear, no matter what gear your in, they all perform the same.
OC, Love the videos man keep up the good stuff, Iâve got the exact same bike and the centre of gravity of the bike is lower due to the boxer motor and it is a heavy bike approximately 222kg tare mass so pretty heavy. The steering is mostly weird due to the centre of gravity and takes some time getting used to in my opinion and the power I have gotten it reflashed due to aftermarket exhaust and intake (the sound isnât anything special Iâll agree but I like the bike) so mines a lot more responsive compared to what I have seen with the one that you reviewed
Just bought the loop ear plugs. Thanks for the discount code my guy!
Which ones did you get also let me know how you like em? Iâm thinking about grabbing a pair
@@trevorwotring3945 I ordered the Experience Pro. And I will definitely let you know. I ride a 2020 Harley LRS. And it is pretty loud. Lol.

@@trevorwotring3945 Alright my guy. I finally got them. And you know what! Not bad for the price considering. What I like. When you put them on, you can still easily put your helmet on. You can still hear your music. It just dilutes a lot of the background noise. I even wear them to work now. I work in a warehouse. And it drowns out a lot of noise. I wear them to the range. I went with the higher price ones. It came with many bud size options. A foam type and a plastic type. Small case you can keep on your key chain or whatever. It does feel a bit cheap. And I'm sure there are better quality sound protection out there. But for the price. It does exactly what you need them to do. I'm buying 2 more sets. Oh, it comes from Germany. Lol.
@@1sgriffin sweet thanks!
There must have been something wrong with this particular bike. Mine has plenty of engine braking and plenty of torque-centric power. Itâs famous for how well it takes corners. As for the little give in the clutch pedal: thatâs how you know when youâre in first. It also gives in sixth. Thatâs how you know youâre in sixth. I donât have a gear position indicator on my Pure, and that give at first and sixth is how I tell whether I can go down further or go up further.
You steer with your feet with the old boxers, all the weight is around where your toes are so you push with you feet and adjust with your hands. A bit opposite to conventional bikes but you get used to it. It is by no means a sport bike so I don't understand your complaints tbh, it's a modern retro universal bike. It also seems the suspension has been adjusted poorly.
After seeing this review prior to a test ride on a 2015 classic that I really liked the look of, I was very pleasantly surprised at how misleading your words are. I was so impressed that I bought the bike without quibbling the price. I have now put about 1500 miles on it. It is old school without the safety net of electronics, to the point that if your riding skills are lacking it will bite you but get it right and it will leave you grinning from ear to ear and wanting more. This may not be what you are looking for in your ride but it definitely floats my boat, I may even invest in some more sophisticated suspension for it. Sounds to me as though there were issues with the one you rode, the bike is not quick in modern terms but it delivers its power progressively and in a way that I am enjoying a lot more than I could have anticipated particularly on the bendy back roads local to me. Tyre pressures and suspension need tweaking to set the bike up to get the best from it, I suspect the R9T that you rode was not well prepped. Did you even bother to check/play with tyre pressures? Most of your gripes would have been fixed with more air.
This makes me want one now.
Glad to see more and more often BMW on the channel!
Awesome video! Any chance on doing a thruxton R/RS?
Do you really hate BMW's that much? Seriously!! I have the top of the range 2017 90T model and they are so, so fast and comfortable. I've been riding motorbikes since 1976 and this is by far the nicest one I have ever ridden.
I had a 61 R69S and later a 1978 R80 and loved them both ..(That R69s is my favorite bike of a lifetime of riding ... I wish BMW would make at least one bike in that direction again.. The original idea was to make a low compression engine that went around the world 3 times before noticing it had been turned on .... so yes 50 or 60 HP using low octane fuel for long life.and economy . .. Shaft drive and a great front fork on the idea of a Earles fork .. If I had the money I would buy this bike for its connection to these older bikes and give it a better front end Just to say it took me over 30K miles to understand /discover how good the R80 was .. It is easy to miss BMW's strengths under a year or twos riding ..Sorry you didnt have the time to discover this bike All the best , Guy oc
The boxer sound isnât for everyone, I quite like it as itâs unique, but your point on the performance is misleading. Compared to this bikes competition itâs one of the faster retro styled bikes and has the Speed twin beat on power and about the same on torque. The speed twin has more down low but the r9t revs out more and surprisingly likes to be red lined. Itâs definitely not slow, but how can you compare an engine that can be dated back to 2004 to a modern 900 thatâs water cooled?
It seems to me that not only is it not the bike for you but it disqualifies in all respects a motorcycle that has been very well received by thousands of motorcycling enthusiasts, I am sorry to read such a biased and unbiased opinion
I was really disappointed with this review. I own a 2015, exactly the same as the bike ridden in this video.
I rode 12 hours into Wales and back a few weeks back and could jave carried on going. The power is addictive and fun. I would say it has exactly the right amount of power for the streets. Im able to overtake with ease, the front wheel lifts when i hammer it, it sounds amazing and it's a blast.
I track it twice a year and it seriously keeps up with the majority of bikes there. Obviously it loses out on the long straights to litre bikes, but people are always surprised to see this thing bombing around.
I had an S1000RR for the day when my bike got serviced and it contrast, it's way too fast for the roads and has nowhere near the same kind of presence the 9T has. I was happy to get my bike back.
I guess its different strokes for different folks, but as a biker guy, I was surprised the reviewer couldn't see the merit for what the bike is instead of out right slamming it.
Yikes lol you're really getting jaded from riding so many bikes
do you have this on the wrong mode or something? when i test rode this bike, i was blown away by that boxer engine. It has crazy torque even from idle from a stop. I believe the fully flair touring version of these bikes used by the police uses the same or at least similar engine. I think you either have the bike on the wrong mode or you came in with too much different expectations of what you wanted the bike to be.
This bike and its engine also fits more into the cruiser bike category. Cruiser bikes are tune differently than supersport bikes. A 1200 cc cruiser bike is on the lower range. In the realm of cruiser bike and how those engines are tune, this bike is great. Test ride a 1200cc harley or indian to compare. Engine is also a cruiser bike character. You keep thinking of this in terms of supersports and naked bikes.
OC⊠there is something wrong with that bike, no engine brake when you let off the gas?! Itâs super wrong like compression wise⊠and itâs pulling because some engine problemsâŠthe shaking itâs! Itâs boxer engine.. the dash is old
I want that bike for exact reasons for everything you said about that bike
New 2021 RNineT has much better handling, better suspension. However for same category Triumph Thruxton RS is the real deal.
Damn, missed the mark on this one. I know it's opinion anyway and everyone is entitled to their own. But not everything can be compared directly to a high performance Inline-4 Japanese bike, or the BMW R bikes for that matter. I could tell when he mentioned that it was lacking power for a 1200cc bike that he wasn't gonna dig it lol. It's an air/oil cooled low revving boxer engine that has been in production with few changes for the past 20 years. It's like comparing a NSX or Type R with an old school Porsche. Apples to oranges.
Rode a 2021 BMW R Nine T Option 719 Yesterday, it was so good to ride, except for the knees in the start.
i also did not like how little the blinker button moved when you pressed it, i found myself pressing it multiple times to reassure myself that i was in fact indicating xD guess you just have to get used to it.
and OMG the sound the bike gives with the Akra is so freaking good :D
cancelling the signals is the only thing I think BMW really messed up on this bike. I am often hitting that button a couple times. All the other switch gear is great.
I think of this bike as the more sensible European equivalent of a Harley. It's not about performance. It's about the theatrics of the experience. Weird body positions, funky shakes and atypical engine characteristics. It draws some and repels others.
I don't think it's meant to be track bike or for street rossi's. I think the target customer is someone in their 50's who wants something that looks cool has some power but it's not going to garner lots of speeding tickets. It's comparable in speed and power to speed twin and new monster. Wonder what you think of those bikes?
I think the big issue is that you saw the looks and though.. sport bike. The r9t series is not that, is a cruiser, retro style that feels retro too. think about a better Indian scout, a better HD.. with better position, and a retro vibe
Air cooled 110 hp low power đ, literally has more power than air cooled Harley's and Triumph bikes. In the "retro" category only the Z900RS and CB1000R Neo Sport Cafe have more and they are liquid cooled (hence more power). 0-60 around 3 seconds.
The RnineT is a down low torque power naked retro bike.
The shaking is typical of boxer motors.
For the dash, style, riding, it is in the modern retro bikes tradition like the Triumph Bonnevilles, Thruxton RS, Speed Twins, Z900RS, aka the R9T competition.
It's not destined to compete against Super Duke R, Monster 1200S, Streetfighter V4S, GSX-S1000, and not even against KTM Duke 890R, Monster Plus 900, MT-09 riding wise.
I RENTED the R nine T Urban GS a couple days, and YOU'RE MISSING IT.... BIG TIME.
The one I rented WAS A HOOLIGAN BIKE --- Twist the Throttle AND Hang On!
BRO, TWIST the freaking throttle, LET it tach out.
The front wheel wants to come off the ground if you just get INTO the Throttle. Acceleration and handling, combined with monster brakes, makes for a VERY FUN TIME, ... But you HAVE TO let the engine tach out.
SOUND ... IS awful. It's A BOXER, BRO...
SHAKE while idling?? IT'S A BOXER, BRO... THAT'S idiosyncratic of these bikes! Boxer Quirkiness, Bro.
Side-to-side TORQUE twisting you sideways? COOL FACTOR BOXER ENGINE, BRO... HUGE cylinders moving sideways! Awesome!
Bro, WRING THE P!$$ out of it and you'll start doing wheelies on it. I PROMISE YA..!
BTW... THESE BIKES are actually RACED in organized season racing. Watch a couple vids by professional racers ---you'll get a much, MUCH different takeaway.
BRANDON JONES video, MOTORCYCLE. COM vids and Bike World video here on CZcams... Check them out, YOU'LL BE AMAZED.
Itâs actually a very quick bike. To say ist has just enough power to get you through traffic is asinine
Something has to be seriously wrong with the r ninet he is riding...Chase needs to ride a new one instead of some used junker. R nineT has tons of power, that bike must have some real issues.
They stopped using that engine in the GS in '12
Very interesting that found the power quite underwhelming. Havent seen that from anyone else. Basically have mentioned great power across the board.
Bars in the bike stock? They look very narrow. Maybe you mentioned that and I missed it.
I kniw its not that big a deal. Its a just motorbike however you should check out (if you havent already) Bike Worlds recent video on their "used review" videos of the R nineT. Im curious as to your thought on his findings. Quite the contrast.
Hmmm. I agree somewhat with the suspension comments. I don't find mines too bad on my '15 R9T and I don't have any issues with confidence throwing in to a corner.
110bhp for a laid back heritage range bike, that's respectable when you think about what it's for. It's never going to be a sports bike, so forget sports bike figures. It's competing with modern heritage like triumph, ducati scrambler and some harleys. My personal opinion is that it holds its own very well. Good power for what it is, remember there's 1200cc harleys with 67bhp!
Not everyone's taste I appreciate, but what have you been riding that you don't feel engine braking on this? I went from an R6 to R9T and thought the front brake was binding đđ
Not surprising for a BMW "Heritage" model -- you'd expect (1) lots of vibrations (360° boxer lets designers "pass off" secondary imbalances to the riders), (2) down on power (to actually limit said "vibrations"), (3) delayed turning (wide handlebars mean more rider input for turns/etc), and (4) low center of gravity (welcome to low/flat boxer engines)...
Not as powerful as the GS/RT/RS as it still uses the oil/air cooled twin, not the newer water cooled ones with DOHC.
This is the old style of BMW bikes.
Oddly the RnineT still has more low down torque than all the LCâs where itâs very lacking until about 2000rpm.
Damn I just dont know if chaseâs yt channels lower view count started from when (1) he was hacked or (2) when chase slowed down on 1st ride series for a very long time! Or (3) riding motorcycle starts to tip down but I think this is less likely
Or maybe were just watching different genre now.
For me the reason why I started to watch fewer motorcycle content is the expense, you know owning one requires alot of other gear and stuff. I feel like all item associated with riding cost a bit more versus regular item. I know it has some tech but there was a time I just spend 10,000 dollars in a week after buying a new motorcycle!
This is a beautiful motorcycle and fast for what it is. What is this guy comparing it to, sport bikes ????????
can someone explain what OC means lol
I have a 2021 r9t, maybe bmw made tweaks to the newer ones but I genuinely do not understand most of the gripes here. Itâs definitely not a sporty bike and suspension takes some works, but itâs a fun/good bike nonetheless.
This gotta be the sexiest bike ever made you look like a boss
I got to 9min, bad review. I have one exactly like this, with a different pipe. Been riding for 40 years. One of the best bikes i have ever had, and i had quite a few.
LMAO - I don't if you just had one with a modified transmission, but I have only ridden one (2020) at it was fantastic. Especially the shaking you mention is anomalous. The ride was was like butter for me and plenty of power. I mean, I have an 1800cc and a 1400cc, and the 1200cc R9T delivered similar acceleration just because it's so light. LMAO - you called it heavy. I mean, to me its a paper weight. I have never rode a bike that shifted as smooth - definitely the best transmission I have experienced. It will be my next purchase. OC
New sub here, great videography and music with the shots! Cannot wait to dig into more content.
I enjoy my '19 R9T on the streets more than my F4I, R6 and RSV4. This dude sounds like he has never ridden a 1200 cc cruiser to know what to talk about. This is a modern cafe racer just like the thruxton, they're both on the top in this " class ", it's not a sporty naked .
