    Makes perfect sense. I have been watching and learning rod wrapping. I have one of my late grandfather's surf rods I am restoring.

      Yeah, don't look to closely at store bought rods once you start learning about rod building.
      You'll notice a lot of little things that are cosmetic mistakes and then you'll find yourself sifting through the inventory looking for ones with the least flaws! 😆
      Usually just cosmetic flaws that don't necessarily have an affect on the performance, just nitpicking things.

    Great info! I am looking at building my own rods in the future. Looking at some building kits and will be practicing on fiberglass rods like you suggested. I have always been interested in it and your videos are very informative and easy to understand. Thanks for all the great information! Glad i found your channel!

    • @TheFishingHobby

      Awesome! I hope you enjoy rod building too. There are lots of wrapping jigs available. I think I sell about as good of a hand wrapping jig as you can buy. If you haven't seen them, here is a link to my video about them and there are links to different parts of the video as well as a link to my eBay listing in the description of that video: czcams.com/video/C9j8CjLtVn0/video.html
      It isn't the cheapest available, but it is more versatile than most. If you aren't sure if you want to invest much in your gear and want to try out rod building first, I have a link here that will show you how to build a simple cardboard box hand wrapping jig: czcams.com/video/wEC8ktjlYTk/video.html
      That isn't as easy to use, but it will help you get an idea of what it is like and may help you decide if you think you will enjoy rod building before you invest in a lot of gear.
      There is a jig made by CRB that is a step up from a cardboard box jig and a step below my jigs but cheaper if cost is a concern. If you have an Academy Sports store nearby, they have a few Fuji guides and some Fuji thread (black) that may give you enough items to wrap a rod for a test run. You can also strip down an old rod and build off of that blank for a good learning experience and a test run on a real blank. I have a video about that here: czcams.com/video/pDNEU25lLSI/video.html
      Feel free to ask questions as they come up about equipment, thread, epoxy or anything else while you are learning. I'll be happy to help if I can. Good luck with it and keep in touch!

      @@TheFishingHobby I was looking at a build kit that included the stand and rod dryer and an MHX rod with everything to build for something like $179 off of mudhole.com Would that be a good way to go with starting out? I saw a starter kit for $149 off that same site just for the equipment, no rod or anything. I will check out yours you have for sale, i havent looked at it yet. I will keep you posted on progress though. Looking forward to doing my own because once i get proficient at it i can have a top notch rod for the price of a mid level and make it my own. Thanks for all the info!

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  Před 4 lety

      @@mikelepori707 I saw another CZcams channel promoting those kits the other day: czcams.com/video/071zHKnbeqs/video.html
      I left a comment on that video talking about the wrapping jig itself and found out later that the comment had been hidden by the channel owner. I left a polite comment and he gave a friendly response but hid my comment from public view. That tells me he got the kit for free in return for promoting the product. I understand that, but I don't think it is fair to his viewers to keep information about the drawbacks of the jig away from them. The major drawback to that particular wrapping jig is that the thread tension WILL change on you while you are using it. It will either tighten or loosen the wing nuts that maintain tension on the spool depending on if you are pulling thread from the top or bottom of the spool. To be honest, his wraps do not look good on the rod he built and some of that can be chalked up to inexperience and a learning curve but I can promise you the changing thread tension didn't help! Now, you may be able to be creative and figure out a way to modify the jig so that can't happen. You shouldn't have to! The company knows that is an issue with the jig and they haven't updated the jig to remedy the problem. That would make me think a little about purchasing from that company. They should take care of that if for no other reason than to keep people interested in rod building. It is also the right thing to do! Less frustration equals happier (and returning) customers! This gentleman builds/sells ice fishing rods and he told me in a conversation that the threw away his CRB jig after using mine and kept the stands to use with his dryer motor: m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=848768575458517&id=622235554778488
      He also sent me at least 3 other customers with the exact same issue. That tells me there is a design flaw there that really needs to be addressed there.
      So, my rant aside 😆...I'd personally want to know exactly which guides are included with the kit. Fuji is a cut above all the others in my opinion and that is mostly because their frames are just better than anything else I've found. They are very rugged without being heavy and won't let you down. The kits don't come with much wrap epoxy, so that is something you will be needing to order more of. I personally prefer Flexcoat epoxy, but there are different opinions on that. I would carefully weigh the costs of the individual items in the kit and think about what is in the kit that you may or may not really need.
      I understand the convenience of a kit and it takes a lot of the guess work out of gathering up items. I understand that and that may be the way to go that would work out best for you. My intent isn't to steer you away from that, just to make you aware of some things to think about. I'd be more than happy to suggest some items to look at outside of a kit that will help you get started and may even work out cheaper for you in the end. I'd also recommend taking a look at this video I made about some items you can find in just about any area with a few big box stores that will be useful for rod building: czcams.com/video/TFPmfjF8UcQ/video.html
      I know looking through information online can be a little confusing while you are getting started so always feel free to ask any questions you may have along the way. I don't know nearly as much as some of the pros, but if I can help I'd be happy to 👍

    Thanks for this. I guess you could certainly use this method to make a trim band that was wider than two turns? Right. But could the method be used to make a two or three different color trim bands … instead of just one?

    Great video!! I just started building rods again after a 15 year break. This will make trimming very easy and clean. I do have a question though... how do you trim the rod tip being there’s not guide wrap to hold it in place?

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to provide me with some feedback on the video!
      You can do the method I show in this video and just use the main color on the blank going up to the tip top guide tube or if you just want the trim color only, you can do that like this gentleman shows in this video: czcams.com/video/CaKEZ1WWJeI/video.html
      Hope that helps!

    How would you do this if you where wrapping winding check?

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  Před 4 lety

      Just the opposite of what I showed here. When you pick up your main color you will be wrapping back towards the grip (assuming you are wrapping with your grip on your left hand side).
      In other words start your trim where you want it and then wrap towards the grip with your main color. Does that make sense? It is one of those things that might not make sense typed out...

    • @TheFishingHobby
      @TheFishingHobby  Před 4 lety

      @@chrisaguirre7018 not really. You can burnish the whole wrap that direction to fill in a bit if needed.
