You are one of the best teachers I’ve had. You really explain how things work. I believe this is a very common question for people. The way you’ve explained it is right down to detail. I’ve actually bought one of your videos the other day about learning how to record hip-hop. I have been producing and mixing my own music since 1999 on acid pro. I can never get enough knowledge about how everything works. Everything has changed so much since I started however I have been completely in the box since I started and tell me everything sounds great. I’m on every digital retailer, I’ve had CDs pressed. I’ve gone on tour. But now I have multiple sclerosis and I have been focusing more on studio work. I’m definitely a fan of the things that you do. I am a new sub since last week, keep up the good work and rock on brother!
I just came across this video and, My Goodness, it answered a lot of questions for me about using a Hybrid approach to mixing and recording that I couldn't find here on You Tube. There is a load of wealth contained in this video. Setting up hardware chains and using Bypass to have you gear connected but not using it in your chain. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
It,s great to see you grown so hard: from not talking to the screen from Italy till now LA going for the wild ride, with working very hard in many fields and still staying friendly and respectful towards others... THATS THE WAY TO DO IT DAVID, we are all people, and we all need eachother......I wish you good luck and we all know and trust you will grow further and further....Just by being yourself...Being ourselves and make ourselves better every day, will harmonize with others...
you can do this more simply with a A/I such as the MOTU 828mk3 N just use the Qmix interface + patching your HW racks in the I/Os N then setting up Insert routing in your DAW
I will, as others here, start to say thanks, cause I finally gained some knowledge in this subject which other videos hasnt helped me with. But a lil knowledge often creates more questions. I got an Apollo 8, so basically same numbers of ins and outs and now I realise that I need to go out from 7/8 and in to 7/8 if a got a stereo outboard, as I plan to invest in a Neve 1073 dual for tracking, but also for mixing. My new question would be: How to do use same outboard on many tracks in the same song? Do you simply need to listen and tweak your outboard till your happy with the sound and then Print it in to pro tools by recording it and then remove the I/O plug, so you can process on other tracks as well?
I'm glad you mentioned the 828X and the Apollo. Its been difficult to find anyone talking about both of these in one video. I have an Apollo TwinX via lightning to computer. But I have a Motu 828X which has inputs for my external rack modules and has 2 digital I/O. I hear that you can digitally connect the Motu 828x to the TwinX. And all of my audio sources go to a Big Knob (using Source A from Apollo and Motu 828x going to Source B) then to speakers. All due to TwinX limitation on Midi inputs and capped audio inputs. I think the TwinX adds more track options if you use the digital connection with 828x. TwinX should have 2 digital I/O. I want to use my MPCX in standalone mode connecting midi to all of the racks then audio to Source B on Big Knob so I don't need the computer but there are times I want to connect the MPCX in a DAW session. Is there an easier way to interchangeably connect 828X with Apollo, take advantage of the extra tracks, streamline connections? Does this even make sense to anyone? So Im confused on whether I should connect my keyboard USB to the computer or if I should connect it midi to the 828X. The keyboard is the Roland JunoDS which has a vocoder and actually a decent sound library so I want to connect it all and use it as a midi controller. Trying to understand the options using the ext racks via midi and the limitations in set up. MPC just released a software update that gives you (think 32trks) when you connect an interface directly USB to the MPCX. I think I can connect it to the 828x. Thats amazing plus the digital connection option to the Apollo. Its just all too crazy... trying to find simplified workflow set ups. Any thoughts would be appreciated or if even to continue the conversation. Thanks
Been doing this recently. Not strictly for mixing - although now I know how to do this in Cubase, that may come - but for testing new hardware with pre-recorded audio, as it's much quicker to get to hear how the hardware is behaving, and much better than me plugging in a guitar or microphone
Im so glad I found you! I just upgraded to the 8pre es and Im looking to get outboard gear to get the sound I want in the physical world instead of mixing my drums in box. Thank you!
I know nothing about PT, but Cubase (Pro) supports hardware inserts without any hassle. If easier or not I can't decide, due to the lack of my PT knowledge, but from what I saw in your video, it's easier in Cubase. Maybe it's just, because I know my DAW well, so don't take it too serious :).
@@mixbustv It's the same in Cubase. Don't get me wrong. I didn't want a weird fight whether your DAW is better, or mine. It seemed just important to point out, that it's easy to do in Cubase as well. Sadly only in the Pro version.
I can't see myself going hybrid, any time soon. Of course, I want to try it, but the cost creeps up quite a bit when youre delving into hardware. That said, even I found this useful, so anybody that's on the verge of setting up a hybrid mix chain right now should find this vid invaluable

I have a single 6176 unit that i use to record and also to print some of the vocal takes that werent recorded at my studio. However if I get sent a stereo track, could I just print the left channel and then the right channel independently on the same hardware settings? Thanks David!
Always great information on your channel and videos, thanks for sharing that... As I'm quite new to "hardware" side of things, when you've run your track through the hardware, say you run a vocal through the chain of hardware, do you then need to print that track to another track in your DAW, so you can then free up that hardware again to use for something else (like background vocals etc)?

Amazing video. In your professional opinion, do you think analog hardware circuitry wears out? I just pulled out an old Behringer compressor and Behringer EQ both about 15-20 years old along with a presonus Tube Pre V1 from 20 years ago. I calibrated the proper gain staging to minimize levels and get everything low and controlled, but yet and still, my vocals maintained a punchy distorted sizzle to them that I just could not smooth out in post mixing. It came off jagged, rough and harsh. I don't remember the sound of my vocals sounding like this 15 years ago when I recorded with this same equipment. Do you think maybe the hardware has seen its best days and getting new equipment would solve this? Or is this something to deal with, using all analog mixing gear?
New subscriber of yours. Really awesome stuff for newbies like me. Thanks for sharing your knowledge bud. I got some new gear recently (Klark Teknik stuff-Equalizer, Compressor, limiter) and have been trying to figure out how best to connect it to my Presonus 1824C audio interface
WOW!!! DOPE!!!! and CLEAR!!!!! if you don't mind me asking:"Do you have a video on how to set up your hardware with your MOTU interface for recording vocals?
i come to this video every once in a while, and i have a question, now an audio interface like the id44 or the apollo twin has a built in preamp inside, so if i go basically from Pro Tools > Line Out to an Analog Unit > then Back into the Mic 1 or 2 input of the apollo... wont the apollo input go through its preamp cause each preamp sounds different, with its own charecter? or am i wrong and will the sound not change at all even if it does go through the interfaces built in pre amp
doing that would hit the pre amp on an apollo twin but using line in and no real gain introduction from the apollo pres you won't get any noticable colouring from the pres 👍
Best of Both Worlds with Hybrid Mixing! The question I thought of - Idk how unrelated it might be considered - but with SO many USB outs to control not only multiple A/D interfaces, but also Universal Controllers, Drum Machines, Synths, Guitar Interfaces... What kind of USB, or HUB or technique do you recommend, and are there rules for what not to plug in where (I've heard NEVER plug in a D/A interface through a USB HUB due to latency, but if you're using multiple interfaces, have a HUB, and only 2 USB outputs on your computer for instance type of thing then numbers are limited, and then should creativity trump the general rule?)... I do It's just that it seems so essential as far as how that audio sends and receives, and I do know that latency can be adjusted internally inside many DAWS, but that doesn't seem to imply that I'm not necessarily doing something inappropriate.. Thanks as always David for your content, you certainly are the man!
brilliant vid david, i know you had the drawmer saturation unit a few weeks back, did you test the guts out of it compared to you 542 units, im finding the 19 outboard slightly better than 500 series, dont know if its a power supply thing, but these micro details iron weight and clarity all add up, thanks for your time

Hi, I have a question wonder could you help, we have a vocal track which was recorded via ProTools, an SE RNT mic & a Apogee Quartet interface. Is there any easy way we can print this back in but through our new Analoge Addicts 1960 preamp? Kind regards Paul
You technically can you simply use it an you'd use a compressor or an eq in hardware insert, the problem is you're simply gonna add that to the preamp that was recorded with, preamps can't be emulated or added later in that sense, the transient response, the tone (or lack of) is what you end up with for any give pre once you record. everything else is "after the fact" and it's not the same as you would have recorded with it
MixbusTv thanks very much 🙏🏻😊 we didn’t realise how much they improved the sound until we got one! We’ve tried this one against a 610 & imho it’s miles ahead 😊 Kind Regards Paul (Dad)
Please help me with this question I am using logic and using the i/o plugin. When I put that into my stereo out channel, I am hearing both the original audio and the audio back from my external compressor. I am supposed to hear "ONLY" the processed audio back from the compressor, right? How do I do it? I am using Apollo twin and it goes out from analog 3/4 and comes back to analog 1/2 in. The speakers are connected to analog out 1/2. Also, how do I print my mixbus with the external processing in it? Doing a real-time bounce will do the trick?
I can't for the life of me find the video where you go over how to find out the true latency from your hardware interface, to avoid phasing when doing parallel processing with hardware on say like a drums bus or a vocal. I remember you had a video showing how to do this in Pro Tools. After you figure out the exact latency (delay compensation aside), you then demonstrated how to go into your hardware inputs dialogue in Pro Tools and tell PT how much latency your interface had for hardware inserts. Can you please link to this video? Thanks!
Hi David, thanks for the video!! Can I ask you what kind of cables do you use to connect the unit in the 500 series? They have to be short or it's the same? Also, can you suggest some brend (good quality/price)? Sorry, I know there are wars on cables but I don't have the experience to judge just by myself!! Thank you for your work, cheers from Italy and stay safe!! \m/
The shorter the better although doesn't really change the quality if it's good cables, but you save money with short ones. I use klotz, cordial or have em made by Joe 😄
Can someone correct me if I’m wrong please . when you use the apollo twin for a stereo compressor . Switching the “cue outputs” on the Apollo twin console from mix to 3/4 makes the line inputs to 3/4 so pro tools recognizes it at the same input/outputs . I’m having a problem connecting a successor to my pro tools thru Apollo twin. I get signal and it seems to work when I adjust the gain knob but the meter doesn’t work . I can use the successor on a individual buss but when I bring the entire song to the same mix buss and then go thru the successor. I can hear the adjustments but it doesn’t print .. printing a single buss works not not multiple .
awesome! , how you use it in a mixxing session? when you have the results you want in a track you record that in to another channel, and save the original source or, what is the way this be done properly ?. thank you
hi there I was very pleased that you touched on the topic for the case of the UAD Apollo twins. I currently have one of these and I purchased a dangerous compressor for it. what are my options so far when routing the audio in pro tools? I am a newbie to the whole routing in pro tools as well. thanks
David, I know what that old intro sound was, hahahaha. Did many people know what it was - did you get many comments about it? It always cracked me up, man.
i have one question if you send your vocal to any comp. then you also have to send guitars on it so you have to print the vocal first means rerecord it right?
Hello First I'd Like to thank you for your Videos they are awesome I have 7 pieces of gear and my audio interface has 8 imputs and 8 outputs would I need a patchbay or what would you suggest
You're welcome! Well first thing is are the units mono or stereo? If stereo you need 16 ins and 16 outs to connect them and use them for mixing (as individual hardware inserts). But, even if you get a 16 channel interface, you will need 2 of those outputs for the monitoring so you would have to daisy-chain at least two units (and bypass one when you don't use it), or, yes you would need a patchbay in which you connect all the ins and outs of the interface and all the ins and outs of the outboard then insert whatever you want wherever you want with the bay. With an 8ch interface, you can only connect 6 channels, because 2 are again, needed for the main output, if you have all mono units you could avoid a patchbay and just connect 5 of them each one on one channel, and daisy chain 2 on the 6th, but if you have stereo units, then you definitely want a bay.
Great video brother! I have a very important question and hope you can answer it. I have an Apollo Twin x and just bought a 500 series chassis with a pair of Neve 542s and an SSL Ultraviolet EQ to be used specifically on my mix bus. A friend of mine recommended not to insert the 542s into the SSL and connect them independently instead. Since I only have 2 I/O what would be the best way to make my hardware work properly and/or I need a new interface. Cheers
Great video and I understand it . What I don't understand is why I set the h/w insert and the audio cuts out . No playback at all . When I remove the h/w insert everything is fine . Would you have an idea why something like this would happen ?
@@mixbustv lol I figured that much . The input and output of the mono channel that’s being used does show signal in both input and output. By the way I’m using a presonus quantum 4848 being summed together by the orbit 5057 going into the Apollo twin x for monitoring .
Your setup makes little sense explained this way. You can book a one on one session to figure things out but at a first glance, if PT uses the Twin drivers, then you can't do that. If it ues the quantum drivers then the orbit becomes a problem for hardware inserts. Overall, I would not use the presonus to go in and out of the box in any case
hi..thks for your explained..,for 500 series and hardware analog..are we always have to pair item for stereo or can we use only one item mono for mixing outboard?..thks

@@mixbustv I look forward to that video indeed, thanks!
Cool David I have some hardware gear like Drawmer 1973 and a new version Fatso I would like to stsrt using.
brilliant vid david, i know you had the drawmer saturation unit a few weeks back, did you test the guts out of it compared to you 542 units, im finding the 19 outboard slightly better than 500 series, dont know if its a power supply thing, but these micro details iron weight and clarity all add up, thanks for your time
@@mixbustv ah man, thankyou for sharing the info and yes the dionne is a lovely solution to the end of line glue for me now, i use cytomics glue at mo, but miss my serpent vca before my trusty old fostex cd recorder, the 1976 to wes will be the way out for me, i only have 2 500 series comps at mo the great river pwm 501 and a neve 565 from the shelford so 3 weeks till my dionne :), really enjoyed your vids and help man this last month, top man, will send you a copy of album through chain when done, peace
I feel like there is a step missing at the end. Do you print a track with the external gear in the chain?
Please help me with this question
I am using logic and using the i/o plugin.
Thanks!
@@mixbustv Omg THANK YOU! Perfect!
Thank you so much for this video. Please could you tell me what kind of cable do i need for these connections?
Balanced cables, either XLR or 1/4" depending on the gear
Thank you very much.@@mixbustv
How do you hook a audient 44 to a vca 7721 for bus compressor on the whole mix I’m using Cubase
Hey I’m trying to figure out why I’m unable to use all 3 of my outboard gear in PT at the same time as insert?
What is that 8 channel in and output interface
Awesome!
After connecting the outboard gears to the interface, what gain do we have to keep for line inputs and outputs of our interface?
It depends on the system, the outboard, the routing, your methods, the mix.
Hi david. Can you do this with the MOTU MicroBook IIc ?
Hi David, thanks for the video!!
Can I ask you what kind of cables do you use to connect the unit in the 500 series?
They have to be short or it's the same? Also, can you suggest some brend (good quality/price)?
Sorry, I know there are wars on cables but I don't have the experience to judge just by myself!!
Thank you for your work, cheers from Italy and stay safe!!
\m/
The shorter the better although doesn't really change the quality if it's good cables, but you save money with short ones. I use klotz, cordial or have em made by Joe 😄
@@mixbustv Ahah, I consider DIY!! Maybe you can ask Joe to instruct us how to made cables :)
Thank you David!!
Is it good to use mixer? Not audio interface? I have babyface pro. But it has few ins outs
awesome! , how you use it in a mixxing session?
when you have the results you want in a track you record that in to another channel, and save the original source or, what is the way this be done properly ?. thank you
hi there I was very pleased that you touched on the topic for the case of the UAD Apollo twins. I currently have one of these and I purchased a dangerous compressor for it. what are my options so far when routing the audio in pro tools? I am a newbie to the whole routing in pro tools as well. thanks
@@mixbustv thank you. Finally got it to work but it is extremely limited as you said. Very appreciated ... 😁
David, I know what that old intro sound was, hahahaha. Did many people know what it was - did you get many comments about it? It always cracked me up, man.
i have one question if you send your vocal to any comp. then you also have to send guitars on it so you have to print the vocal first means rerecord it right?
Yes, but that's really not the way to mix, that's why we have multiple units.
@@mixbustv thank you very Much
Great video brother! Cheers
There's absolutely no reason why you wouldn't daisy chain the 542's to the violet if you want to use them all on the 2bus
Great video and I understand it . What I don't understand is why I set the h/w insert and the audio cuts out . No playback at all . When I remove the h/w insert everything is fine . Would you have an idea why something like this would happen ?
Yes because you didn't connect things correctly
You need 2 for stereo
tyrna hook my dangerous dbox plus up for long time ty
Love you 🎵❤
