  • In today's video, we're talking about my most recent investment in my film camera collection: the Pentax 6x7, a medium format SLR that was first launched in the 1960s.

    Interesting to see how different cameras drive you to shoot differently from eachother
    I’ve found I’m shooting more environmental portraiture since I got the Fuji 6x9 camera

      Definitely! I think it’s one of the reasons why different tools are good for different things tbh!

    Years ago, I actually held a Pentax 6x7 in my hands, in US terms the negative is 2 1/4" x 2 3/4" rectangular format, it was really heavy. The standard lens was 127mm, you can buy a 55mm wide angle. It shoots 120/220 roll film 10/20 exposures, to shoot 220 paperless film, you turn the pressure plate 90°. ETA btw some SLRs from that era, don't show 100% of the frame in the viewfinder, it is more like 98-99%, so sometimes you have too much headroom.

    I just got one, love it so much. Agree so much about it being an slr. I couldn’t take my rb67 anywhere easily.

    One of the homeliest cameras ever made! But so much fun to use and image quality? Near perfection!

    love the 35 mm - medium format way of shooting insight... I was just reflecting on the way that I stopped shooting more "spontaneous" photos since I picked up my Rb67 and left my 35 mm camera on the shelf. It's important to not be a "slave" of each format

    My favorite film camera 🔥 i got some 3d printed adaptors that let me shoot panoramics with 35mm film in it. There's a lot of little tricks and tips with the 67

    Pentax 67 is excellent choice! Congrats!
    I have that wooden handle for left hand attached to it, so when shooting portrait I'm pushing it up with my left hand instead of pulling it up with my right hand. I also don't have the grip on right side like you do. It really depends on personal preference, I suppose.
    BUT! Now that you have both (Pentax and Mamiya) and will be shooting with them. I'm curious about your thoughts on both of them after few months. Which one would you choose in certain situations. Which one is your favorite after some time.

      Ooh that's interesting! And yes, I'll definitely do some comparison videos as time goes on about how I use them differently!

      Yessss the original wooden grip helps a lot!!! I didn't enjoy shooting with the Pentax before (without the grip) because it put a lot of pressure on my wrist and didn't feel supported. But the grip completely changes that. The key is it let the grip sit downward on your left palm, which will be a more similar holding position to the RZ.

    Sooo question: When you say the 1/30s flash sync means that more ambient light gets captured, that is the case because during those 1/30s that the shutter is open the flash fires somewhere during that time, but only lights the scene for less than 1/30s, which means during the rest of that time the film captures the light that there without the flash? and faster speeds are more congruent with the actual time the flash illuminates the scene?

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  Před měsícem +1

      Yes! Because the flash fires for such a quick amount of time but the shutter is still open so it captures more ambient light. It’s why you use a slow shutter speed if you’re trying to drag the shutter or use a mixture of continuous and strobe lighting.

    I got one a while back and had the exact same issue you're talking about with leaving too much headroom. I find it really difficult to focus with it in general and then if you remember to recompose and you're shooting with that 2.4 lens you're going to be out of focus again immediately. It's a rough learning curve for sure.

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah that's exactly what I'm talking about! I'm sure that I'll get the hang of it eventually.

    The Viewfinder on the Pentax 67 only shows 90% of the frame. That might be why your composition is a bit different to your other shots.

    You hsve metering prism on the camera. So, never take the prism off without first taking the lens off. There is a tiny chain that acuates the aperture and if you take theprism off irst it will break the chain and ruin your day. Guess how I know this !!!

    Another video offering insights into the use and function of the Pentax 67 system from someone with no experience or learned knowledge about the camera or its operation. I.E., a waste of time. The first 40% of the video is devoted to a circular discussion of the Pentax;s limitation of shooting daylight balanced flash. (That not what she says, but it's what she is doing.) HInt: as a user of the Pentax for 40 years, I'll assure her that using it to shoot daylight balance flash handheld is a waste of time and effort. There were two lenses which incorporate leaf shutters to do this, but they are a frustrating pain in the ass to use (speaking from personal experience). They are also both second class optically compared to their non-leaf shutter alternatives when shot as a normal lens. The Pentax 67 does everything else so well, that it can be forgiven this shortcoming. Also, she undertakes to compare the color rendition of a Pentax 67 with a Mamiya RB (?), using different film types in the cameras. What is that supposed to show? Amazing.

      You’ve got a strange way of understanding a video. I’m talking about MY first impressions of using a camera. MY experience, using it in MY practice. Not once have I claimed for this to be the best all and end all guide or resource to this camera.
      Using flashes within fashion photography is something that is instrumental within my professional practice, and I use them often with other cameras. My reference to that within this video wasn’t about my intention to solely use flashes with the Pentax, it was about the fact that I haven’t yet attempted it and so can’t offer an opinion on how that fares.
      Further, your point regarding colour rendition is ridiculous. I wasn’t referencing the different colours between the two cameras, since I referenced that there were different film stocks anyway. The comparison I was making by shooting both rolls was more regarding how I compose images using the different cameras and also how the metering fares between metering manually on the Mamiya and using the built in meter on the Pentax.
      Your comment is incredibly condescending and I don’t appreciate your energy at all. I make these videos as a journey throughout my practice, which I am transparent with and always have been throughout the existence of the channel, to share my experiences and learn and grow with other likeminded photographers. If this channel is not for you then, please, do us both a favour, and don’t waste your time watching or commenting. People like you and your “feedback” are what discourages people from sharing their journey and progress and is absolutely what’s wrong, and stunting the growth, of the photography community.
