One thing I love about this channel is the commentary. So many bushcraft channels are silent for ASMR reasons. I suppose they have their purpose, but personally I like the explanation on what Dave's doing, why he's doing it, and just his personality. Dave's family channels and TA Outdoors give me that.

What I enjoy is their lack of commercialization. Once I was curious about the brand of hand ax and suggested he list the products and could make a few bucks. Liked him even more when he responded that it wasn't a direction he wanted to go, rare in today's CZcams world.

The fact that you're a good presenter with your videos, is a huge reason why they're so popular. You're detailed in your narration, and you keep us hooked wanting to hear more. As a 65 year old woman, I find it somewhat strange that I watch these videos. But, my mind and heart yearn for them and I think it's because I love your lifestyle. Being out in nature, doing your own thing, all the while documenting the entire process, which in turn generates income. What a life you and your family have. Smart people who love nature and love independence. Kudos to you.
You could build a cabin like this. Yes, you would need help for a few things, like raising the wall panels, but you can see that Dave struggles doing that by himself, too.
It’s amazing that people who have never done something are the ones that always tell you what you should have done.
Something that is so refreshing about your approach is that you don't get bogged down in overthinking and over-engineering. Perfection is very much the enemy of the good for projects like this and the internet know-it-alls can really dissuade people from taking these projects on. Thanks for all that you do dude!

Exactly. I've watched plenty of shed / cabin build videos and they all go over my head in details and terms I don't have any knowledge of. Almost like a foreign language. This just feels like a normal dude nailing a cabin together with sheer will and calm determination.
As a former bricklayer, now RN in Alaska, I love watching your videos. I miss working construction, laying stone, block and brick. After dealing with patients all day, being on call for other peoples emergencies, I love having a day or two off to cut and split firewood, fixing a delapidated shed, changing the oil in my daughters car. Just zone out, forget about everything else and enjoy being outside.

When I watched this cabin build video about 2 years ago, I got so inspired, that I purchased a piece of an abandoned land in Spain. This year I am starting the first camp and I am intended to build a similar cabin while the stone house is restored. Thanks Dave for this awesome q&a video :)

I was one of the 24M viewers. This video is amazing. I love the patience and common sense answers you provided. I was a carpenter for an old school guy. We had an air compressor on the job that broke down. The owner of the company showed up with two 50lbs boxes of spikes and said, "Here brought you guys a new air compressor."

Dave, I suffered from abuse growing up, spent a lot of years in therapy with useless "therapists", and the video of the building of this cabin was very calming and relaxing because I knew that this is something that I could do, and have a safe space even though those who hurt me most passed recently. But trauma doesn't heal like most wounds. Great content.

Well ive probably watched you cabin build series about 20 times or so. To me the cabin is perfect. Im a porch guy and thats the only thing i would of changed and made it bigger. Im in the process of saving up and living as cheap as possible and when i do buy land, i plan on building this cabin for myself and live in it full time. Thanks for the inspiration Dave!

One insulation product I would recommend is aluminium coated bubble foil. Go watch a channel called "Boss of the swamp" and see the great success he has had using it under his floors. Like you he had a background in construction in his younger days, which has stood him in good stead for the rest of his life, building and refurbing cabins. He along with all the Whipple clan's video content are my favourite channels to follow.

Great in-depth video on the cabin Dave. We’re enjoying your latest stuff, it’s like sitting around the country stores old pot belly wood stove chatting about past events. About screws and framing nail guns, I’m 74 and people just don’t know how to use a hammer anymore. Remember those hot dipped galvanized 16 and 20 penny nails? TC man and keep posting.
Nails are softer than screws so they flex/bend with shifting foundations rather than shear like hardened screws will. Driving nails at opposite angles will give surprisingly good holding power. The correct fastener is determined by code but experience will tell you what is the right application. Remote construction brings out the McGyver in all of us, whether it is a bridge or an outhouse. Stay safe, cuz you are the doctor as well when building solo.

I can’t believe people have anything negative to say about people who are so authentic, energetic, and so down to earth. You guys keep doing you! I’ll keep subscribing and liking all of your content! I truly enjoyed your way of explaining things and your ability to build up a story, and the simple way you tied everything together.
It reminded me of nostalgia and the way I heard stories in movies and books as a young kid in the 70s.

Growing up in central California I was taught to fish, hike,hint,camp,explore, build,pour concrete,build fires,canoe,shoot, bushcraft by my father John.

I'm building an off-grid cabin as well on property I bought in the mountains 2yrs ago, and I get many of the same questions as we've posted in social media our build progress. Where is the plan, did you buy them. No, the plan was in my head, that's it. I made some horrible pencil drawings of the outside and a floorplan inside, the wife nodded, and off we went. That's the plan....don't over-complicate it and don't buy plans unless you've never built anything and the cabin is your first go at any construction. Ours is in sandy soil on a steep hillside, so it's 3ft on the low side and 6+ feet off the ground on the high side, pressure treated post foundation as Dave did, but we used concrete as well. We use a decent sized generator for our corded tools, pancake air compressor that run nail guns, circular saw, hammers, hand saw, cats paw, framing square, and several levels. If you are young, just bang those nails with a hammer, I"m older and prefer to shoot 90% of them with a pneumatic framing nailer, it's a preference, not a requirement. We did use GRK construction screws in certain places out of convenience or when we wanted to pull something tight and keep it tight. They are NOT deck screws or drywall screws, but they are expensive so go easy on them...nails are cheap. Since it's a cabin, we don't have load bearing walls, it's one room of fun with a second story loft, all the weight is carried on the outside posts....make those good and you are fine. Don't be afraid, get off your butt and just do it.

Old carpenter insulating tip. Coat your arms face neck and any other place that is exposed to fibers with baby powder before you start stuffing insulation. The powder keeps the fibers from sticking into your skin. Once you're done, take a cold shower first to wash off fibers. A hot shower opens pours and let's fibers stick in them instead of rinsing down the drain. The baby powder trick has always worked wonders for me and I've stuffed thousands of bats over the years

On the danish oil - I’m a big fan of spar urethane, and mixing with mineral spirits to thin it out (it’s pretty thin compared to regular poly) goes on well and dries quick when thin!
I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I know I won’t be able to build from the ground up any cabin anytime soon but I got myself a cabin in Frazier Park CA and what I am doing is remodeling it a bit before I use it since it’s built in 1930 and it needs a few things but I watch and make note of things, so thank you for posting your video and inspiring folks like myself to be a bit radical 😎👍

So interesting thing about filling in the air gap on chimney's. Living in Delta Junction many people heat with wood. When building our house my husband put in rock wool in the air gap as did his brother because thats the way their dad did it. 12 years ago, my brother-in-law had a fire in their roof. When everything was looked at the chimney through the roof hadn't failed. It turned out that the rock wool had conducted enough heat to the wood box that it caught the roof on fire. Thankfully they caught it quickly and the fire department got there fast as they didnt loose their entire house, just part of the roof and some water damage. After that my husband opened our chimney area up and took all the rock wool out and then put an 8 inch ducting up through the roof so it wasnt just a square wood box through the ceiling. Definitely helped with our peace of mind.
