  • This is not your typical test and the run down of bike specifications. I am critically looking at this bike from the perspective of someone that rides large adventure bike. How does the Norden 901 compare to the KTM 1290 Super Adventure lineup and how does stack up against its KTM sister the 890 Adventure.

    Norden owner here - I had the exact same false neutral problem but my dealer recalibrated some position sensors during 1st service (1000km) and it fixed the problem completely, has been perfect ever since.

    I never had a wrong neutral when shifting in my first 7000kms and I hope it stays like that. The engine does not like low revs, but I like it very much because it’s comfort. Have a safe ride...

      That is good to know - seems to be a sporadic thing then. Some owners have seen similar results. If you haven't had any issues yet and I am sure it will stay this way. Enjoy your bike ;-)

      Ein bisschen etwas von der Designsprache hätte der 790 und 890 Adventure auch sehr gut gestanden- besonders das Tankdesign 😉

    Norden owner here...
    I agree with everything you say, and would add that the problem you had with getting Neutral when shifting to Second happens on my bike too...I also have problems between 5th and 6th if I don't put effort into pulling up the gear lever.

      Bei meiner Norden 901 habe ich die selben Probleme zwischen 1.und 2. Gang und auch beim 5. und 6. Gang
      Ich war schon einmal in der Werkstatt deswegen und habe das Getriebe neu justieren lassen hat aber nicht geholfen.

      Guys - good to hear from you owners. That is interesting to know that the issues with the shifter seems to be more common. I hope that the dealers will find a fix for you. That was really the most annoying thing I found on an otherwise amazing bike.

      It happens for me too but not that often. Mine does not jump back out though when I move it back into 2nd.

    I love my Norden. I’ve been a BMW R 1200 GSA owner for many years. I love the lighter weight handling. And the horsepower / torque feels as fast and quick as my Beamers. I’m not going back to BMW.

      Somehow this bike feels so much lighter than it really is. The weight & weight distribution is really great on this one but the GS balances pretty well too - it is just a lot heftier overall - especiall the GSA

    Its very important to sample the Rally throttle response mode via Explorer mode. A solid 15% quicker, sportier feel versus the basic Road mode. Drinks fuel a bit faster too of course.

    Der Motor ist glaube ich schon gut aber mal ehrlich: vermisst du den Durchzug des 1300er Motors bei den "kleineren" Modellen?

      Wie gesagt ich war sehr überrascht wie viel Power da rüberkommt. Es ist ja doch selten das man die volle Performance wirklich voll ausnutzt- in den Bergen sicherlich eher als auf dem flachen Land. Mit Gepäck und Sozia wird der Unterschied sicherlich auch deutlicher

    Thanks.That gearbox is a bit questionable?My 2022 1290R gearbox and quick shifter is butter smooth.

    Ok ? Have mine for a few days. Also thought it was me or maybe my bike. But probably when i see you have it also that it is a broader problem.
    Until now i have not been able to use cruise controll. The button doesn't do anything. Is that also something that you need to activate through the settings ? I have pushed it quicly forward, hold it longer forward. Tried it maybe 20 till 30 times but it does not react to the cruisecontroll switch. And that is to bad because i really do not like the gashandling. After 10 minutes yoir wrist is getting to hurt. Never experienced something like that on another bike. And i ride for more then 40 years.

      Hey Kees - I do not have the bike anymore so I cannot check but cruise control is standard with the Norden 901 as far as I know so my bet would be that it may need activation in the menu (just like the quick shifter). The only time my cruise control will not work is when I have the traction control turned off - maybe another place to look if you have accidentially turned it off.

      Possibly check with your garage dealer. I own a Norden and it works fine. Button should be moved to the left to activate.

    Thanks for the review! I'm going to transfer from my 1290 SAS to the Norden Expedition. The 890R was too hardcore (hard saddle, no heating, etc.) because i also use my bike for travel and daily commuting to work on the highway. And, more importantly, start doing more off road for which the 1290 is too heavy, i think. Your thoughts? Keep it up!

      The Norden Expedition has lots to offer - fully decked out at an attractive price point. Really nice bike. Only issue I would have is the relatively high dry weight of 215 kg - compare that to the current 1290 SAS /SAR with 220/221 kg - that’s a mere 5-6 kg difference (that is the weight of the battery of these bikes). I wish they would offer the mid size segment closer to the 190 kg dry weight - 30 kg weight difference would be very noticeable when going off-road. Every new iteration of adventure bikes gets heavier and heavier. I have considered going a size down for better off-road handling but only if the weight saving would be significant.

      @@MotoVibes I agree on the weight so I’ll remove the pannier rack, lighter muffler, remove soft bags and change the super heavy skid plate for the axp. That should shave off 8 kg.

    I am so sure this sound issue can be improved with an aftermarket mid pipe and muffler. Maybe even headers, just change the whole set up. Because this is a parallel twin it has to sound a bit better than this, I don't know what is the firing order, what degree crank and so forth on this RC8 parallel twin by KTM?

      We are limited in Europe with street legal mods - only thing we can do in the muffler. Anything else starts to get annoying as we need to present the bikes for technical inspection & emissions testing every 2 years. Akra & Co should have something street legal for this bike but you are definitely starting from nothing with this motorcycle 😂

      @@MotoVibes yes agree but you know, it’s not that hard to just make the switch just before one has to take it for testing and registration. For the rest of the time just ride it the way you feel is right for the bike. At least here in Croatia is the way we do it, even though we are EU.

      ​@@roverroko306 kinda what I used to do when I still rode my Harley - there is a good chance that you can get pulled over by cops that know what to look for - if things are not in order you may be walking the rest of the way here. So - I have been keeping it legit since switchting to adventure bikes ;-) To be honest - I am happy with the sound of my current bike - not sure though what I would do if I had the Norden 901🤣

      @@MotoVibes Well here where I am from cops will stop you only if you are riding a bike without proper riding gear, like the helmet. So I know exactly what I am going to do with my Norden when I buy it. As soon as I sell my current bike BMW R nine T. And it’s not only going to get an upgrade on mid pipe and muffler, maybe the headers, something like Tekmo-full system. But also better air intake, and possibly a remap to get the fuelling to work as rich as possible. I am more than certain the throttle niggles wouldn’t be present anymore.

      @@roverroko306 That should absolutely do it - maybe get some extra punch out of the engine too which does not hurt and like you said the throttle will likely be more responsive - Engine may run cooler too with a richer fuel-air mix. Well - let me know when you have made all those change ;-)

    That netral / second gear issue is bad. Makes me reconsider purchasing the machine.

      I am not the only one that had this issue- however my understanding is that it can be fixed. It’s probably still a rare issue as this is the same gear box as on the KTM 890 and it has not popped up as a major issue on these bikes.

    EURO5 and sound are not necessarily related. Just listen to the sound of the T7 or Africa Twin. Sadly the EU5 models from KTM sound like a bucket of screws in a blender.

      My hopes would be on aftermarket parts to get the sound improved. The stock muffler on the 2017-2020 1290 SAR is pretty awful too 😂

      @@MotoVibes the Remus sounds pretty nice. Had that one on the demo bike. Night and day difference. But the engine sound remains horrible no matter the exhaust 😅

      It seems the gear box was not an isolated incident- I wonder if this occurs on the KTM 890 as well as the hardware is the same. With that said my KTM ride on the 890 did not show any issues.

      In most situations I do prefer my 1290 - however the massive weight does limit the ease for off-road riding that is why I have an interest in these lighter adventure bikes. The Norden 901 gets a lot of the things right that are important to me on an adventure bike.
