  • This year I traded my KTM 1290 Super Adventure S for the the R model. I have owned and ridden both models and this is how they compare to each other. As I enjoy travelling with these bikes the comparision will include looking at the fully loaded bike setup. Also, I made a few changes to the stock settings of the R model including changing the wheels size.

      Thank you very much. As for the audio I am using different microphones than last year. At low speed it works really well. Sound is decent at higher speeds. However I still had complete audio failures on this trip too - I think the 3.5mm jack is starting to wear out - details are in this Video if you are interested czcams.com/video/d7eh1HCxp0c/video.html

    Hello Oliver, In my (old) book, a steering damper is the only way to go, Hyperpro or similar! Some of us will go with 4 clicks and others 7/8 or even 16 on some other brands! Many different factors come into play as you know or experienced! Your weight, height, tires sizes, wheel sizes, luggage, your clothes, wind, speed, pavement and sometimes most importantly the windshield position along with your helmet.... Personally I have a tall Puig screen and I wear a Schubert C4 Helmet. My seat is set at the lowest front position and in my case the wind goes right "over my head" at high speeds with the modular open! I know it's illegal in some countries!
    I believe that you have the best all around detailed technical videos out there for the 1290 KTM's! Always a pleasure to see you ride! Happy holidays! Cheers

      Thank you very much Patrick- I will have a look at that Hyperpro steering damper next season. Top end speed is not the most important thing to me but I would like to go a bit faster the “flower picking speed” on the Autobahn 😂

    2019 KTM 1290 SAR. No high speed wobble. No wobble period. Max speed was probably 125mph (201kph). Toured with Touratech aluminum panniers and Lone Rider bag on the rack. Stock windscreen. Stock tire size. Tires used were Dunlop Trailmax Mission. Suspension settings set to fully laden.
    Hope this helps.
    Glad to hear the shoulder is getting better.

      Thank you very much- it’s good to read that not everyone has the wobble issues. Seems like a hit and miss. I have the stock wheels installed again which should help a little. Steering damper upgrade is next. I would be fine with stable top speed of 200-220 kph but 160-180 kph is not enough 😉

    Use to ride a Yamaha 360 Enduro back in the early ‘70s all over Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France & Austria (all seasons). In the winter (winter flight suit) time I made a lot of stops at Gasthäuser to warm up. I’d love to get one of the new KTM 1290 S models and ride Europe again before it’s too late.

    I've got a 2020 R and I had the same issues with speed wobble.
    I took my wife for a spin one day and I noticed that the wobble had completely disappeared. I didn't add any preload before the ride (as it was only a quick blast) so that made me wonder if reducing the preload for one up riding might help (I had set the sag to 30% previously).
    Anyway I backed it off about 3 turns and hey-presto no more wobble - strange but true!
    Tyres are Motoz Adventure.
    Safe riding!

    I just recently installed the Hyperpro RSC on my 1190 Adventure from 2013 because the factory steering damper was done for. Leakage in the rubber gasket and almost no damping left (my gut feeling). Before the change I could only go up to 200/210 for short intervals while overtaking because the machine developed severe wobble. With luggage (factory cases and top box) that dropped to around 150/160, even with the refitted floating mount. With the Hyperpro I have only done a quick Autobahn test (maybe 2,5 hours) with and w/o luggage on various steering damper settings (between 6-10 clicks out of 22) and I no longer have any wobble below 235/240 whatsoever. Even with luggage I can comfortably go above 200 now, which is more than enough for me. Also the front wheel now feels more stable (not as shaky) in stop and go traffic below 6-10 km/h. So yeah, maybe that is something to check out.
    Of course that is not the only possible explanation for solving your problem. In any case I would say that with your load the handle bar shouldnt wobble like that at speeds around 160/170. That does not look ok to me.

    • @cdnthnbluline
      @cdnthnbluline Před 2 lety +2

      I went with the RSC Hyperpro as well. I find about 9 clicks is the sweet spot for daily riding. I also threw their progressive spring on the rear. Feels like a totally different bike now.

    • @chilly243
      @chilly243 Před 2 lety +2

      @@cdnthnbluline awesome! I havent found a sweet spot yet because I only had 3 hours of riding in total with the Hyperpro so far. But on the few twisty sections encountered between the Autobahn hours I found 6-7 the most comfortable. But it also was around 0 deg Celsius that day and I read somewhere that the damper stiffens notably in these temperatures. I dont have enough experience on that yet to verify that though

    • @cdnthnbluline
      @cdnthnbluline Před 2 lety +3

      @@chilly243 Ah, that could affect it, yes. I'm on the S, running dunlop missions and I do a fair bit of slow off road sections. 9 clicks feels stiff enough to get rid of bar wobble from wind buffering at high speed, while remaining easy to push/pull at slow speeds. I set it and forget it. Enjoy!

      Is it possible that KTM replaced the steering dampener in 2014?! Because my 1190 from 2014 has no wobble, up to ~220, but above that...no clue
      (130kmh max. Speed on the Highway...) The dampener however "feels" quite nice for me. It's very similar to the R9T or the old R1200GS AC.

    I understand you want to ride more offroad, but wondering why you didn’t go with the 2021 1290 R with more off road set of wheels (spokes and TKC80-like tires) or is it just the 21’ wheel ?

    I own an original 1290r and had also the wobbling problems with the original Continental Trail Attak 2 tyres. more than 220 km/h was impossible.. To seat a more backwards helped a little bit. after changing to Bridgestone BT A41 the problems were gone. Over 250 km/h without any wobbling. Mayby the reason was, that the bike stood one year on side stand in the store (2017 to 2018).
    I bought the KTM heated KTM Comfort seat. Big difference on long trips, but 2cm higher. The Height was only at the beginning little problematic. After 40.000 Km I can say, that is the bike, which I wait a long time for, after more than 20 years BMW R 1100GS. But license killer with all the electronical helpers.

    My 2020 S suffers the wobble also, I can understand it wobbling at high speeds with luggage but it you take weight if the bars at 60 kph it's ridiculous, but I also have a VStrom 650XT and it suffers similarly at that speed, perhaps its related to wheel size/geometry. I'll try a damper as the high speed wobble is scary 😨.

    You are saying it backwards. They taller front wheel will cause more high speed stability issues and knobbier tires will make it unstable too

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  Před 2 lety

      The larger diameter wheel will provide more stability to the bike - especially at higher speeds. The same effect occurs at moderate speeds while cornering- that is why smaller diameter wheels are used for sports bikes - they turn better (all else being equal). Larger diameter wheels ride better over obstacles that is why they are preferred on off-road focused bikes but they compromise on handling in corners. So much for the theory but it’s also what I experienced on my 1290 R - I had both wheels diameters 21/18 (stock) and the 19/17 installed both with brand new street tires - the bike is more stable at top speed with the 21/18 combo - ads 20-30 kph to the top speed

    S seems more planted, R a bit lanky/gangly.... pity..... maybe I just need to properly set the suspension better etc but it's not giving me fast cornering confidence compared with the S

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  Před 2 lety +1

      Similar expereince here - if you push it to the limit the S will be the better bike on pavement - no question about that. I will take the R to the track in August and I am curious how that will go - it is just a cornering training on the track but it will interesting to compare the R to the S after a day of riding on the track.

    now the question why don't you just leave the 21 inch underneath, with a set of street tires, then you don't have that instability after all... maybe a little less road holding in the bends but i would do that instead of reducing the diameter.... but well this one is less on the road, but better off road.... so it just depends on what you want.... maybe just have to buy 2 motorbikes 🤣🤣😂😂

    • @MotoVibes
      @MotoVibes  Před 2 lety +1

      That may just be what I end up doing. I still had the second wheel set which I bought for the S model - the idea was to to have street rubber on one set and knobbies on the other. The smaller wheel set not only allows better street tire but the tire is wider with more rubber touching the pavement In corners. But now I also have to switch oui the side stand with every wheel size change - just had a little to the hassle 😉
