I'm so happy to see someone else reacting to this! This is my favorite show ever. It gets better with every episode and I know some people had a hard time getting into it with the first couple of episodes, but I knew I was going to love it from the moment Stede has his crew doing arts and crafts like a bunch of kindergartenders. ❤ Hope you enjoy the rest of the series as much as I do.
Some people find the first 3 episodes a little slow, so it's always delightful when someone loves the show from the get-go 😊 I honestly knew I was going to watch the whole thing as soon as the ball room gag happened 😅
Fun facts:
-Young Stede is actually played by Rhys Darby's son Theo 😁
-The British officer who gets tea poured over him and is later tied to the boat was played by the show's creator David Jenkins
Everyone on the crew is amazing, other characters we meet later are amazing, but I adore Stede, he's one of the most relatable characters to me 😁 I also love his wardrobe, especially his golden robe 😍 The entire show is absolutely gorgeous and I love it, it's been my favourite thing since I watched it a year and a half ago and I'm still completely enthralled with it, I've been counting down the days until we get s2 😅
13:35 fun little detail: the navy officer who asks that question about the flag (and who later rows back tied up on that little boat) is the show runner, david jenkins. he has a little cameo in this episode haha!
Izzy’s my favorite character. I watch all the ofmd reactions I can find but it definitely drew me in that you put him in the thumbnail lmao I was like finally, some respect for my horrible little man
Stede Bonnet was a real pirate and his nickname was the gentleman pirate

@@MoviesWithMartyIzzy Hands was also real - although they took a bit of artistic liberty there, since he would’ve only been 16 in 1717. You’ll also meet another real pirate, Calico Jack (played by Will Arnett), later in season 1. (Calico Jack was one of the inspirations for Jack Sparrow). Jim is loosely based on Mary Read, who lived as a man to inherit a fortune and later became a pirate. Jim is non-binary (you‘ll notice they will start using they/them pronouns for Jim later in the show) and became a different character. It seems like Mary Read & another pirate, Anne Bonny, will appear in S2.
Aaah more OFMD REACTIONS. Absolutely will never tire watching ppl exposed to this show for the first time. It’s always so interesting to see how different ppl from all walks of life relate to this show.
Just some things to mention going in:
- although never explicitly stated throughout the show, the character of Jim (Vico Ortiz) is considered Non-binary (as is the actor) and is generally referred to the pronouns they/them. Makes things easier going forward.
- the show was originally marketed and promoted as a buddy comedy with pirates. Promotion/marketing changes quite drastically toward the end of the season and especially for s2.
- creator/ showrunner cameo: the naval officer who’s tied to the boat, screaming is none other than the creator himself David Jenkins.
-Taika Waititi does have a part on the show, but act 1 (eps 1-3) focuses more on Stede’s journey.
-baby bonnet aka young stede, is actually played by Rhys Darby’s son Theo. What a cutie.
-Season 1 was mostly filmed on a studio lot, and the ship itself is just stages on rigs surrounded by a projection. Season 2 however got the green light to film in the beautiful landscape that is New Zealand (Rhys and Taika’s home country).
-Lucius saying “not all beards are beards” is an important quote, as it’s the overarching theme explored in the show.
-I love the comparison to Monty Python, I’ve seen a lot of ppl equate the comedy of ofmd to “The Office” but Monty Python seems more apt.
Some ppl may find the comedy style a lil campy or cringe but its actually quite a popular style of comedy in Australia and nz, and I would imagine the uk as well.
Jim starts to be called "they" fairly early, but we are not quite there yet.
"Keep it straight if you can." (I don't think it's too much of a spoiler to say: *fails utterly all season at this task*.)
My favorite non-lead character is Oluwande, but there's a lot of competition!
I love this show so much! Your reaction was great! Though you skipped some of the best lines in ep 2, in my opinion: when Lucius was talking to Jim about being great with secrets, his mother believed he liked girls for a long time, and not all beards are real beards. This is one of my favorite shows ever, because it's so queer and heartwarming. The other one is Good Omens, for exactly the same reason. 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈

This show was such a great surprise. I loved everything about it. Hard to pick a favorite character, they are all great. If I have to pick one it's probably Lucius, he's fabulous.
The mutiny is the most marketable part.

When I watched the first episode I was sure Jim was Blackbeard infiltrating the ship and crew for some reason. Up until the reveal at the end...
Yes!! I kept thinking so much that he was Taika, which then turns out he IS Blackbeard 😅 (having seen more now)

If you liked the reveal, I think you'll love the show as much as I do. The only thing I've seen by Taika that has disappointed me the least is when the TV series What We Do in the Shadows started with just repeating the movie, but not as good.
He's probably among my top five still living film makers.

Not only is it a great show by itself, but it's educational too.
A few times I reacted to the liberties they took with reality when they put real historical persons in the same location, just to do some research and find out they had actually served on the same ship and probably interacted. If every detail is correct is lost in the past, but some fantasy is OK. Right?
The only "fantastic" storytelling move is that whenever you jump ship or set off in a dingy, you seem to end up wherever in the world you want to go.
I found the show kind of dumb at first. I never would have made it past the first episode had I not had the promise of queerness later on, but by the end i was obsessed! 😆🥰
