yep, blackbeard's actual real name (irl too) was edward teach. so he wasn't lying to stede when he told him he was ed, he just let him jump to his own conclusions and didn't outright corrected him. :D i like that it didn't last long though, mistaken identity is a fun trope but i never seem to enjoy it for a long period of time. it's really fun to see how these two extremely different man instantly click together. i love ep 4 for that simply fact so much!
So, the show is *inspired by* history rather than historical, but there are historical sources that are completely befuddled about what the heck the Gentleman Pirate is doing sailing with Blackbeard, still recovering from being stabbed by the Spanish and wandering the deck in a nightshirt. I appreciate that even in 1717, people basically responded to that pairing, "Wait, WHAT?"

I LOVE ep 3, the man for sale bit always gets me 🤣🤣🤣 And the We could have made magic line was improvised! The speech Stede made Lucius introduce him with kills me, too and I absolutely gag every time the nose jar is on screen 🤢 Oh, and in case you didn't realize, they said tapas are like catnip to Spaniards, not cat meat 😅 I don't think I've seen any other reactor realize the lighthouse plan that quickly, great job on that. If you look at Ed's face after he turns around from his conversation with Izzy at the end, he looks unhappy, I don't think he's actually planning anything, more like trying to keep Izzy from leaving. I'm curious to see your reaction to ep 5, it's my favourite!

All I can say without going into spoiler territory is that this show is insane in all the best ways. You can tell how much love and thought from the cast and crew went into making these characters and this show a reality.

Between this show and Good Omens representation for the LGBTQIA+Community is getting the love and support it deserves. I've been trying not to watch season 2 yet because I want to binge the whole season in a weekend. I'm really enjoying your reaction and commentary to this wonderful show!
The thing about the Golden Age of piracy is most people were illiterate and the European naval powers of the day were engaged in some pretty heavy progranda in hopes of maintaining power. As a result we almost definitely know Blackbeard's real name was Edward Teach or Thatch and was born in England, or the American colonies. He definitely had a beard. But as having a long beard was not appropriate in that era it's possible there was exaggeration to make him seem more monstrous. The also little there is about his meeting with Stede. And what there is, also highly mythologized. You can read how Stede definitely regretted "going a pyrating" and would do anything to have the chance to give it up. Even though he had that chance and did not in fact give up on piracy. The less dramatic contemporary record say Blackbeard meets Stede after a serious injury from the Spanish. Then Stede basically hands Blackbeard command and the crew wasn't particularly bothered since Stede didn't have any naval experience before he bought himself a ship. Which is the strangest part of the Gentleman pirate. The line between pirates and navies was not particularly thick in terms of job. Pirate ships were more democratic and you sailed for a portion of the loot so you made more money but that's about it. The job itself meant there was crossover from respectable naval career into piracy and sometimes back again. But you didn't start your career as a pirate captain. Blackbeard also plenty of experienced sailors to work with but for some reason kept Stede and his ship around.
I love that new reactors are still finding this show. These are two of my favorite episodes of the season. Can't wait to see what you think of the next batch!

I know you've seen eps 5 & 6 now, so it's not spoiling anything to say that Rhys Darby replied to Taika's tweet by saying, "An absolute pleasure romancing with you" 😁😍 So I have to giggle when you say, "I really hope they don't kill off Stede" 😂❤🏳️🌈🏴☠️❤
