How To Wire 12 Volt Fridge In Your Truck

  • In this video I show you how I wired my 12volt fridge in my truck to have full time power without a secondary battery / dual battery or additional power source. This set up allows me to go about 3 days without charging in decent weather. Hotter temps will decrease that as the fridge will run more.

    Sooooper good explanation and illustration. I don't understand why CZcams has never raised your stuff up to where more people can see it.
    Your fuse protects your wiring to the fridge, not the fridge. The fridge has its own fuse to protect its wiring. So use the smallest fuse you can that falls at or below the rating for the wiring from the fuse to the fridge. My Dometic is rated at 9A, so my wiring is sufficient to carry 12A and my fuse is 10A. The fuse will blow before the wiring becomes a toaster element.

    Awesome Job. I have ADD and you kept my attention till the end. Using fuse blocks and relay/ switch boxes
    to connect circuts is a gazillion times safer than splicing into a hot wire and wrap gum wrappers around the fuses
    like they did in the 70's to power all of you gadgets from one source. Have a great rest of your weekend
    and Regards from Ody Slim

    One other thing: the diode is not a fuse, even though it fits in a blade fuse holder. If you remove the fuse and put in the diode, it will slightly drop the voltage to the alternator sensor and cause it to raise its output voltage output to compensate. Only problem is, your alternator sensor circuit is no longer protected since the fuse is gone. Now if we just had a fuse with a diode in it... 🤔

    Nice video. I think a 20a fuse is way overkill though. Most fridges I know of would prob run just fine on a 10a or maybe even a 5a fuse. Not 100% sure what they draw when the come on initially but I'm pretty certain they dont use anywhere near 20a. Ok so I just checked my Dometic CFX50 in the garage running on AC 120v it draws .5 amps. Convert that to 12v and its 5.52 amps. So you could definitely run it on a 10 or even a 7.5 amp fuse.

      Its a solid option to prevent loosing connection particularly in bumpy conditions like off-road. Full time power is a mistake either way though

    Sir Goes: another excellent video. Your my favorite overland channel for real practical mods like this. Well done sir! How many hours of 12v power can you get to power your fridge? I'm using a battery box that is rated 540WH and it's good for about a day in summer. 50W is max power consumption of my fridge. Also can you charge your batteries with solar panels once at camp with your setup?

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 2 lety +1

      Depending on ambient temps I can get anywhere between 2-4 days with this setup. I could hook solar up, this was actually the original plan but I move so much I dont need it. In order to hook solar up i just need a controller and a panel

    That X2 battery sucks. I went through 3 of them in 18 months on warranty . Finally switched it to the Duracell equivalent and it is way better. Also has more capacity than the X2. I didn’t have any parasitic draws going on with the X2 either. My other overlanding buddy is on his second x2 now inside 1 year.

      Man funny you say that. I had great luck with the first one then went through three in 2yrs. From my understanding they got bought out and are no longer northstar batts. I switched to full throttle and it seems good.

    The fridge in my house runs on 15 amps. You could get by on 5 amps prolly. Good to see you again.
    Oh yeah. I hit an erosion gully so hard up on the old nc 105 it shorted out my battery internally. Now I have a glass mat battery. Since then I have came up with a shock absorbing battery tray. Do you think there is a market?or is it already being made?

    How long can you let the fridge run without starting Apple before you have whip out the jumper pack?

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 2 lety +1

      I meant to add that info in the vid but forgot. In decent temps somewhere around 2-3 days. In really high temps its only about 1.5 days and really low Ive gone 4. I usually start apple for about 10min if the batt gets to 11.6 or lower on volt meter.

    So your setup for powering the fridge is creating full time power to fridge from your deep cycle battery.....instead of just plugging the fridge into a cigarette lighter connector for part time power? Did I miss another reason for your setup...regarding powering the fridge?

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      correct, eliminating the cigarette lighter connector is also a huge benefit as they are very unreliable particularly if you do any off roading.

      @@SirWilliamGoes Thank you Sir, I overland in a 2006 LX470 and always take an extra stand alone truck battery with me (in case alternator went out and could not charge starter battery). What about running fridge off of truck battery while driving and somehow connect fridge to posts of extra battery when not driving?

    • @SirWilliamGoes
      @SirWilliamGoes  Před 2 měsíci +1

      At that point you’re basically running a dual battery setup.

    • @richienell
      @richienell Před 2 měsíci

      @@SirWilliamGoes Was asking because Im not interested the seemingly more complicated "dual battery" setups I've seen with other components added if I didn't have to. Maybe just connecting fridge cable to posts of other battery isn't safe for all I know. Maybe it wouldn't last long enough then no way to charge it unless you switched it out with truck battery.

He's not going to stand behind his words, his advice, or anything really when you start your own car on fire. Diode in a fuse box...omg. 🔥
