  • Why do they call it Nob End?
What does the Manchester Bolton and Bury can look like?
What Bolton pub would local legend Fred Dibnah have gone to?
    Big thanks to:
Naeem and all at Trend Furnishings for making me my curtains - trendfurnishing...
The Old Man and Scythe for letting me film all the amazing historical gubbins inside the pub, thank you to the ladies that stopped to laugh at Nob End with me and of course thank you to the one and only Fred Dibnah!

You need to gather up those lovely curtains at the top to stop light getting in and heat getting out. It's easy to do - you should have some parallel threads running through the curtain header tape - just pull them up at one end to gather the material between the hanging rings. You can knot the threads or wrap them round a safety pin but don't cut them off - you need to undo the gathers if you ever wash those curtains. I promise it'll make all the difference. Good luck!

We saw Fred speak at Reading Town Hall a couple of years before he died. After the show as we walked along the corrider to the bar he came out of a side door. My wife asked if he was going for a drink and he told us that he would have a pint of Guiness. We sat in the bar with him for over an hour, he told tales and chatted about my wife's brother's vintage tractors and other contraptions, whilst a couple of dozen enthusiasts sat at nearby tables earwigging. I bought the second and third rounds too!
We Yorkshiremen are not famed for buying pints. Especially when the recipient is Lancastrian.

Fred Dibnah is a legend, there will never be another like him. Pretty sure I've seen every documentary about the man, as well as all the TV series he did later in life. He is DEFINITELY someone you want to look up.

  • @paulayala4816
    @paulayala4816 Před 2 lety

Fred Dibnah was quite the character, his enthusiasm, knowledge & passion for a bygone era captivated many. From scaling 200ft chimneys as a Steeplejack to his understanding and explaining how Victorian machinery worked, along with his telling stories of his memories growing up in Bolton as a kid! -- I paraphrased this from fellow CZcamsr Daft Monkey, who has uploaded videos on Manchester and it's history. Those derelict locks look very cool, it would be expensive to get them up and functional again, but who knows perhaps one day. The curtains look very nice, I like the color which brightens up the interior of your boat really well.

  • @dianelefarge5898

If are pleat top curtains you pull the strings in to make the top, well a pleat. So you don't get the hanging down bits at the top and blocks out more light and helps them be more thermal.

@@cherylwevill9980 So many people don't realise, been around so many friends houses and been you do know... Makes them look so much nicer and gives them the uniformed wavy shape. Allot of people get pole curtains as don't realise how track and pleat are meant to work. Are so much better visually (I think) and when done right are allot better at being thermal and blocking light than pole ones.

Watching UK tv, they do all sound like that! whether it is motorways, or eggs, or an old piece of rusty iron found in a skip-they elugise and emphasise and wax ever so serious, sometimes walking away at the end to drive home the (often tedious)point! Jeremy Clarkson was the zenith of the style and of course Alan Partridge the antithesis of it.

Excellent Robbie, you always do your homework diligently, then tell us the most interesting version. Wonderful work with the drone, giving us a veiw of what was. Nobody really wanted to talk about Nob end, but you enjoyed your giggle, good on ya, somebodies gotta take on the tough topics and delve deeply for the truth. Pub of the week, how many times I've stood beside you at the bar expecting, but no, I missed out again. Take care Robbie, until next time. (thats not a threat, it's the way you read it, you're just feeling guilty )

That is the key - sometimes you'll have a page full of historical facts but you need to extract what you think might be most interesting! Perhaps i'll buy you a pint one day not promising anything though 😂

I’m from Bury and didn’t realise until now that there used to be a canal here! Very interesting, I will be trying to find out whereabouts it used to be, I assume alongside the Irwell or near the old train line maybe?

Yes! Seems from my map that it used to end in a sort of fork either side of Albion road?

Entertaining as ever Robbie. Well done. Brave choice Nob End, especially when your name is Cumming. Blimey! It's Carry on Boating. ;-)
