    G'day Baz, good on you and thank you for sharing your paddle. I had a few laughs as you reminded me of my husband when we first began kayaking years ago. He's now 73 and had his first attempt at paddle boarding the other day (I had a few laughs then too) We live in central Qld, Aus and kayak (quickly) in the river as we have 'crocs' ..... we use the paddle boards down the beach though and love every minute of it. Thanks again mate and enjoy yourself

    Eat a good breakfast before pumping (carb up) and hydrate. I pump mine in 2 or 3 steps 10/ 12/ 15 psi.

I prefer no audience coz I’m still practicing my balancing, and I like dipping in the ocean before I go home, the water 🌊 is warm, so away from audience the better. You were using the paddle backwards. It is a very common error 😏 The blade slopes and people assume you want the slope to face backwards to 'scoop more water' but you want it so that when your paddle blade has been drawn past your body (top of the shaft now sloping forward) the blade is now vertical. To put it another way, with the paddle shaft vertical, the blade should slope towards the front.

    I have just bought an inflatable paddle board, which I have tried out twice so far, with great success.
    The only problem, is carrying the board to the launch site (the North Sea)
    Although the board isn’t particularly heavy, it is a bit awkward to carry.
    I’ve been looking online for carrying straps and there are a few, ranging in price from less than a tenner, to some much more expensive... they seems too good to be true.
    Have you used straps to carry your SUP .. if so, which one did you buy ?

    • @BarryKenny
      @BarryKenny  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Brian, I had the same problem. On a busy day, there’s too much traffic to drive to where I launch, so I wanted a good strap. Unfortunately the experience has not been good - mine cost about €20 or so, and it barely fits the board, and is still fairly awkward to carry the board. Probably a bit better than carrying without the strap, but it did make me wonder whether it was worth the bother. Sorry I can’t be of more help, but if you do find one that’s good, let me know!

And on my last attempt I stood up on the board for 4 seconds. I am hoping to do better than that - on the 15th August. And if it means getting wet. By design or accident. I will do so.

      @@BarryKenny It is. And although I am hiring at the moment. A 10.8 foot board or a 12 foot one is adequate. And good enough for me to do so! I do have a battle plan to do so. Assuming that the problem with the water quality improves by the 15th of this month at Clevedon Marine lake in North Somerset. There's a intention to do so by the 12th so my battle plan for that, remains in effect. For one hour and to learn how to get back onto the board after coming off. I've done a lot of research on this. And I believe that I can do so.

      Hi Barry, I bought my first SUP board last week and was thinking of taking it on a maiden voyage at Bull Island. Your video has been really helpful. I was wondering where to start off from but the Sea Scout area it is. I was also wondering if you avoided the beach area due to the kite surfers?

    • @BarryKenny
      @BarryKenny  Před 3 lety

      Enjoy your new board Tom! Certainly as a beginner, the sea scout area is a good choice as the water is calmer, and there’s no audience! But there’s lots of choices including the slip opposite yacht club, the one a little up from Bay, the swimming shelters on the Bull Wall, and the beach itself. The kite surfers didn’t come into my mind to be honest, I just think the wind will always be a bit stronger and the sea less calm out on the beach.

      Hi Michael, I got it just after Christmas so not unusual for Irish weather not to cooperate over a few weekends. And yes, I was surprised too how I took to it - I assumed it would be the clown show that my surfing efforts had been, but the one lesson I took from other YT videos was “stand either side of the handle”. The boards are sturdy, and it was very calm. Full disclosure, I had stood on a board on holidays about 5 years earlier, without instruction, and with fairly regular falls! And also had a “beginners” informal session a few months earlier, that was worth doing just to see if it was worth buying (again, quite a few falls). But that was my first use of that board, and assuredly as a novice!
