    Thanks to this video I managed to perform this repair on my JV-80. And learn how to solder which I hadn't done since I was kid.
    Be careful when fastening the screws to the board. I had to re-solder a few buttons (with board in place) because stress on the board caused the solder joints to fail
    With new confidence I also managed to repair my Boss DR-660 drum machine. It had broken solder joints under the power input plug.
    Thank you!

    Hey Brad, thanks so much for the step-by-step instructions. It's people like you that make CZcams so great. I thought my old JV-80 had seen its best daysyears ago. Now it works like new...and I only have a few 'spare' screws left over!

    Seen a few of your other vids, most excellent work you're doing! I'm happy you included the technical sheet pages in the vids, that clued me to what parts to get from where. For someone with little electronics experience finding the right part number to replace the old one is my biggest challenge. Thank you!

    So I came across a JV-80 in the trash room inside our apartment complex. Excitedly took it home as I now have a new fix-it project. No way would anyone toss these if it’s working. Plugged it in and...no sound. Then an “internal RAM error” message kept on popping up on the display. I couldn’t even get the system into the diagnostics mode. After thinking about the situation, I opened up the cover and found that the battery back up coin cell was dead. Replaced it and powered it back on. Same “internal RAM error”. Decided to try and re-initializing the RAM by holding down the number ‘8’ key while powering up the system. It will ask you if you want to re-initialize the memory, press ‘enter’ button. Memory initialized, rebooted the system, and YAY! Sound!
    I then decided to run the diagnostics mode to check CPU/RAM/ROM, bender PCB, audio PCBs, check parametric slider encoding, buttons...etc etc etc. You can enter the diagnostic mode by holding down the ‘1’ + ‘8’ + ‘write’ keys while powering up. You can switch back and fourth the diagnostics modes using arrow keys.
    Anyhoo, got to the switch check mode where it lights up all the LEDs. Press the button to make the LEDs go out. Found 18 bad switches. Came across this video and now, imma buy some switches from digikey! Thanks for this!

    Thanks for inspiring me to do the inevitable. I was given this JV-80 as the glue that holds the weights under the keys had broken down and was everywhere. Luckily, at the time, Roland was stepping up and replacing the entire key assembly for the install cost (they would not send me the replacement as I am not an authorized service center - just a DIY'er). So, for a hundred bucks, I could not pass it up. The only problem was the switches started acting up. I found your excellent video and decided to overhaul the switches. I checked the switches through Digi-Key and the part number provided is now "obsolete". The recommended replacement is Digital-Key P/N: FSM4JRT-SI-ND (SWITCH TACTILE SPST-NO 0.05A -24V). Same dimensions as the obsolete switch and everything now works as it should. Note: After assembly there was no output from any of the patches though the demo songs worked fine. Did a factory reset (power on with No.8/16 switch depressed then "Enter" then" Write") and everything works. Great video and thanks again!

    Great video, thanks for sharing this! I just bought a JV-80 for a cheap price due to the fact that most of the buttons are not working. To my surprise, it included the vintage synth expansion as well as a 32k RAM card, each justifying the price I paid for the synth. Now the switches have been ordered, and I will follow your instructions to get it fixed.

    Maybe late and something totally different, but I am busy repairing a JV-80 as well. But before order, I had to open it up to see what the damage in total was.
    There was also a faulty key, which I tought it was only the matter of ordering a new keyspring. But it turned out the key was snapped off. So, hence why I had to open it up.
    I also have a few buttons faulty, some of them turned faulty in a few days time I got the synth. So I have to replace them. Thanks to your video I know what I am up too, and already ordered a few buttons. I am not going to replace all, yet.However I've encountered another issue AFTER I opened it up. It could be coincedence, or something I did,
    But after turning on the JV, after 10 seconds or so, the keys get stuck in a sustainmode. ( without a pedal connected to it) With panic mode, or switching from patch to performance mode the sustain is gone and the synth works fine. But everytime after I turn the power in, after 10 seconds, no matter what patch or setting, it gets stuck in sustain. Already tried factory settings but no avail.
    I have absolutely no clue what is causing it. Do you, or anyone else have a clue!?

    I bought a 1988-89 Roland D-20 Linear multi-timbral multi-track sequencer with floppy disc for a $100 (digital dinosaur) kind of a music work station before they were called that ! Anyway had the same problem with some of the buttons (tact switches) so I bought a pack of 37 for around $30 watched a video and became a soldering expert and replaced all 37 (4 pin) then I bought a four disc floppy set of 64 presets per disc and a multi timbral section for $25 so for $155 I have a very clean perfectly working D-20 with extra presets and it sounds great....... for what it is..........I think I got a good deal !

    The switches on my JV-1000 - which is actually an advanced JV-80 with built in sequencer and disk drive - kept breaking time after time when it was still new and under warranty. Also the plastic buttons broke out of their holding frames, probably due to bad engineering - too much space between the housing and pcb, resulting in too much travel, which Roland of course denied; I was pressing the buttons too firmly. In the end Roland was so fed up with the repairs that they gave me a bag full of switches and buttons.
    After a while I too was done with the replacement of the buttons, mainly those of the built in MC-50 MKII sequencer, so I replaced them with PB86 switches which last till today.

    Did you notice any difference in force required to operate the red switches compared to the black switches as the colour normally denotes the force required to operate. I made some IO boards for a project and ended up buying a couple of each colour/force to determine the best action. I have a Juno 106 and a couple of DW8000 I need to replace the tactile switches on and have wondered whether they'd benefit from a firmer switch action, which would last longer? Enjoyed the video.

    I have a Roland JV 90 that has the same issue, with the switch is not working, but it also has another issue. When you turn the volume low on the slider, the audio comes out of the right channel. When you turn the volume slider up, the audio comes out of the left channel. I have since just kept the synthesizer in storage and was able to acquire at a fair price secondhand both a Korg N1 and a Roland JV 1080. My question is, what it be worth trying to figure out how to fix the unit, or just try to sell it as is? And if I go the selling route, what would be the best avenue to go about selling it?

      This synth is notorious for the semi-weighted keys glue deteriorating over time leaving a huge mess under the keys. This typically happens when the synth is exposed to more humid and hot climates. Easiest solution for this is to remove every key, clean up what red glue you can, then and add some silicone caulk to the undersides of each key locking in the metal weight and what is left of the nasty red glue.

    About the buttons , it's something really odd .
    I almso experience it on my integra , they still work good , but when you verry slightly adjust pressure and feel the clicky sound ..you can make it so that the values are not altered .
    Maybe it's because they are 2 legged switches , .
    Seem to be the same 2 legged push as used in jv series and xv series and probbly the integra
    syntaur.com/roland_xv.html
    Funny really , cheap consumer electronics like my 20 year old nokia still works flawlesly , and it must have had a a gazillion button presses

    Noppes , the rack models of the xp series are NOT the xv's , it's the jv series .1080/2080
    jv1080 = xp50
    jv2080 = xp 80
    The xv series rackmount modules ( xv 3080 and 5080 ), had only 1 keyboard equivalent ..the xv 88 which is basically an xv 3080
