Meet the BEAUTIFUL HMONG PEOPLE! - NO TOURISTS - Mountain Village, Luang Prabang, Laos 2021

  • I rode a motorbike to the mountains just south of Luang Prabang in Laos to find a Hmong village! I got lost on many dirt tracks but finally made it to ban long lao.
Ban long Lao, is a village of just Hmong people. The Hmong are an ethnic group thought to have originated from Mongolia. Little is known of the ancient origin of the Hmong people.
The Hmong people have had a turbulent past. Predominantly living in the jungle to live in peace. They don’t come from any one country and live in Thailand, Laos, China, Myanmar.
They helped the Americans against the communists during America’s “secret war”. They would help soldiers, fight in the jungles to secure safe zones and search and rescue downed American pilots. To the Americans they were heroes that never got their recognition.
America denied any involvement for many years until eventually granting tens of thousands of Hmong refugees. Many Hmong were left in the jungle living in fear once the Americans lost the war.
I go to visit a village that a group of Hmong have inhabited since 1979. They are very welcoming and kind.
I had such a good time here, I could have stayed for the night but decided against it.

I know you are inundated with comments and this is an old video. Just could not pass this one without saying how important your content is. You are maybe the only person filming these people by just spending honest time with them. Every time I watch your films I learn so much. CZcams is full of influencers selling travel and living “tourist lives”(canned versions of the reality of those locations). Your films are watched by many people, and you probably do understand, but if not, please know how important your messages are, even when not intended. Your voice is rare and I hope you continue with this, realizing the potential you have to make a significant impact for foreign understanding about the people from countries you visit. And maybe the way we might all chose to travel and learn in the future.

It’s very close to Kuang Si waterfall near Luang Prabang. This village is open to tours (high season) they are expensive as not many people know how to get to the village. It’s not hard to get to but if you go without a tour, they’d appreciate you buying something (you really don’t have too). It’s just tourism is a big money earner for this village and they have stayed authentic to grow this revenue. 😊

Truth is Hmong adapt to whatever current place that they are in from China to Thailand to America. Before they got to southeast asia it was not bushcraft houses they became nomadic farmers that were moving 1 side of the mountain to another populating only mountains but were always farmed, each government espically after the war pressured them to change and move off the mountain telling them where to live and build things. The lack of gettting jobs like the national nationalitys citizens they populate they can't buy things like them and usually try to sell they're sewings.

@@Craig_Black Been busy with work, so I got to catch up on all your videos when I have time. The "derogatory" word he is referring to is Meo / Miao, that some Hmong consider offensive. In general, Hmong fall into a cultural and linguistical group called "Miao" in Chinese. Some Hmong people believe that the word Meo / Miao is referring us to cats, which sounds like meow. I don't really find it offensive or anything personally, as Hmong people never really created a better word for our cultural group that we belong to.

@@tomvue148 ah ok that makes more sense now. I always found it funny how meow is the word for cat.
Is it true that Hmong come from Mongolia way back?

@@Craig_Black General answer, no, as there has been no solid evidence to support it. However, some Hmong people may have Mongolian lineages since the Mongol Empire did conquer China centuries ago. However, it unlikely we adapted or assimilated any significant percentage of Mongolian culture or genes in our history. Best ancestral location of what came to be Hmong people would be the middle Yangtze river area and the lower Yellow river area of China. There are only speculations about where we come from originally, but we don't have any proof other than China since most of Hmong history comes from oral tradition.

It’s not H-mong. It just pronounce Hmong, H is silent.

By the way, there are two dialects of Hmong in Laos, so it differs how you pronounce "Hmong," in each. In Hmong White (Hmoob Dawb), there is a subtle "h" sound with the "mong" and there is more of a nasal pronunciation. In Hmong Leng (Moob Leeg), there is no "h" sound, and it is just pronounced "Mong."

@@Craig_Black Hmong is a very tonal and nasal language, so there are many words that sound similar with slight tones. The French developed the writing system, so that's why it looks weird in English.

@@Craig_Black Great video tho and looking forward to seeing more! Note: if you say "huh-mong" then the h sound comes out of your mouth which is wrong. The proper way is just like when you are humming, "hmm." Notice how the h sound comes out of your nose; that's what's meant by a nasal h. Combine that with 'ong' for "Hm-ong." It's just one crisp syllable though. If this is all too difficult then yes, just say Mong but never huh-mong.
