Building a Rope Tow!

  • When covid-19 shut down our local ski resort, we decided to build our own! We designed and fabricated our very own rope tow. We added in a few rails and features and now have our very own little snow park for Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding in the backyard!
    Our boys compete in Slopestyle so this gives them the opportunity to train in the backyard and work on tricks any time - day or night.
    It was a really fun and rewarding project to work on with my boys. Some new welding and fabrication skills were developed.
    Love to hear from others on this...drop us a comment and let us know your thoughts!

    My town has a nice toboggan hill and I wish they would install a rope tow, would really get the kids out of the house and wouldn't cost much. I'm sure locals would fund it too.

      The problem is always insurance. Even a rope tow needs the same insurance that ski resorts use. It's the reason small ski hills go out of business

      I'm going to post a followup video soon with more details on what we used. Our slope is about 150 - 200' of vertical and I think the spool of rope was 600'. Didn't use all of that but most of it.

I saw your parts list and am waiting to get approved on Instagram so I can see direct links to the parts, to see if they'll work for my setup. Any help/advice would be great.

      Hi again,
      Did you switch motors, because it looks like you're using a 2HP motor, but you say below that it's a 3HP motor. Also, I'm wondering what size sprockets you used, and the stub axle, wheel, and gear box.
      Thank you

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před 5 měsíci

      I used a couple of these to guide the return as well as the bottom pulley. Just ripped the tire off. They work fairly well. Be better if they had proper bearings. Good luck with your project!

  • @vrivas2186
    @vrivas2186 Před 10 měsíci

    Great project did you replace the pulley in front of the tire with a roller fairlead?

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Many thanks! I did put in a fair lead from an ATV winch. But it didn’t work as well as the pulley so I reverted back. The pulley is actually a heavy duty caster with the tire taken off. Keeps the rope from derailing where the fair lead did not.

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před 3 měsíci +1

      We laid out the rope and marked the length with a marker. Then brought the ends inside and did a splice. Followed a CZcams video on spicing 3 strand rope. Was not too hard.

    I’m thinking about making a rope tow just like this. Around how much did it cost in total?

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před rokem +1

      We’ll, I thought it was going to be about cdn$1200 initially, but I ended up with a gear box and probably bought a bunch of stuff I didn’t need. I would say $1500 should do it though. Happy to send you a list of materials if you want

      Here's the list. You can DM me on instagram @richard_peirce for a list that includes links to products. Rope Tow List
      Rope - $600 ( I think I got this cheaper but can’t remember)
      Motor - $429
      Gear Box10:1 - $149
      Stub Axel - $100
      Wheel(for rope drive) - $70
      Various Sprockets and a chain - can’t remember exactly which 2 I used
      1.5” box tube - from metal supermarkets - also some 3/4” box tube for legs
      220v cable- 10/3 5.99/ft. - also used a dryer plug
      Electrical box / switch
      Casters for rope guides / bottom Pulley (I pulled the tires off and just used the hubs - I’d like to find better ones that are a little bigger diameter with bearings and a deeper hub)
      Tie down straps for top and bottom

    Could you build the frame out of wood

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před rokem

      I think so. Lots of bolts and such. Might be a bit too much flex as you’d need to keep things tight. I think metal is a better bet. You could probably do it with bolts instead of all the welding.

  • @jayrm77
    @jayrm77 Před rokem +1

    Please add a safety gate at the top. It is a rope/cord that goes across the tow path and gets unplugged (which will turn off the motor) if somebody gets twisted up in the rope somehow (scarf, long hair, cord/string on clothing/coat). It will keep them from getting pulled (and possibly killed) through the drive pulley.

    • @makeadventurecanada
      @makeadventurecanada  Před rokem +3

      We have a safety gate. Wouldn’t let anyone use the rope tow without it. If anyone skis or is dragged in any way within 15’ of the top, it flips the main power. All good!
