Great video. To be sure the 1858 Remington Army is by far the stronger and hardier pistol, but to my eyes the Colt 1861 Navy may be the most beautiful pistol ever made...I have Italian replicas of each along with a Colt 1860 Army and I love firing all three of them!
The Remington revolver addressed the issue of keeping the hammer off a loaded cylinder by adding a half notch between each nibble. You can carry six loaded rounds and have the hammer sitting on a half-notch without worrying about the hammer sitting on a loaded cylinder.
+Wayne Heath Genuine colts (and their replicas) had/have a pin between each chamber on the cylinder to put the hammer onto for safety, though the original knockoffs (and their replicas) may or may not have them. This is the biggest reason colts and colt replicas can sometimes have issues with percussion caps jamming the gun, as the spent caps will be caught on the recess cut into the hammer to accommodate these pins.

Actually Colt had solid frame revolver in 1855, the Colt Root revolver. It was a side hammer and had a weak action, but they had it. Last open top Colt was the 1872 chambered in 44 Henry rim fire. The patent issue was with the Rollin White patent for bored through cylinders utilizing metallic cartridges, one reason Colt tried the Thuer conversion as it loaded from the front. One reason they stayed with the open top design is that it was easy to take down and clean and was popular, not to mention their factory was set up to make that style and they had tons of parts. Anyway, good presentation, hope to get more people interested in cap and ball revolvers.

Boy'O'Boy did you take me down memory lane. I had a sub nose with actual bullets that you put a cap from a roll of caps as the primer at the base of the inside of the shell that looked like a regular bullet then you slid a meral lead type barrel inside the shell that was hollow and then you placed a plastic looking bullet that looks like the lead, Man I shot my buddy at his stomach and it actually gave him a blister WoW did I get an earful from his Mom, those were the good'ole days
oh yeA ive always wanted a cap and ball pistol i love my black powder rifle i just learned about using shot begining of the year didnt know anyone with pistol knowlege so could decide what wanted i want a med cal Remington and get the exchanging cylinders.thanks Peace Pops Bushcraft
hey blackie I bought a Remington long time ago and when I first fired it I experienced binding in the cylinder. since then I've come to know it was because of poor lubrication. I thought I'd see if you might be interested in a video on the subject if you haven't made one already maybe also give an in depth in your Remington's base pin grease grooves.
Blackie How does one keep a pietta brass frame Remington .44 cal. new army from excessive fouling that causes the cylinder from turning? The loading lever, cylinder pin, cylinder everything becomes excessively stiff so that you have to force everything to move them. I have tried different brands of powder. Pyrodex, and black powder both, I have even used bore butter nothing has made it so that I could fire more then one cylinder without having to thoroughly clean the gun after every cylinder load before firing any more cylinders. If it were because of the brass frame I would have the same problem with my Griswold Gunnison and my Spiller&Burr, which I do not!
i probably should wait till the end of the series, in case you explain it in a later video but.... is there a way to unload the cylinders? for instance my muzzle loader i can take the breach plug out and push the powder etc back out without firing the gun
+kevin eggleton yes you can pull the balls with a screw to unload and save the cap and powder charge..and if you mould your own ball you can remelt the pulled one..thanks for the comment safe journeys
Are percussion caps still mercury fulminate ? Centerfire primers moved many years ago to lead styphnate they are commonly called non corrosive primers.
to be honest i do not know..it would seem to be diffrent because i do recall back in my younger days cap had a smell..when you poped just a cap on a nipple to clear it..today they do not have that smell..so they may have changed
just watch it it was great are you going to post on the paper ones to i like the black powder vids maby you can do vids on wich block powder gun is good for a starter

Long gone because of Liberals! I had one too, as well as a 1873 colt Army single action that had just a little bit larger bullet

dont the modern versions of bp revolvers have a safety pin between the chambers to rest the hammer on? so why still only loading five chambers?
