    Ahhhh back to my favorite subject. I found the Black Oracle percussion revolver series many years ago, and have stayed for everything else.
    Because of your past videos on the matter, all of my revolvers are tuned and polished machines that I am intimately familiar with inside and out. I never knew how smooth and reliable a Pietta NMA could be. I fixed a timing and lock up issue on my 1860 Richland Arms (Armi San Marco). I have deburred and sighted in all of my revolvers and am confident to fully disassemble/reassemble them from memory now.
    Mike Bellevue has some good info. A few others, but not many. I find your series to be easiest to understand and follow along with, and I appreciate you putting the material out there. There ain't too many ol boys passing this info down anymore.

    Please keep making the percussion revolver vids, they're really appreciated. We all enjoy your woodscraft videos as well, but there's a fascination to those old Colts and Remingtons....and learning about all the things that one has to do to make them reliable and field-worthy, it's like what they call forensic archaeology- and I for one really appreciate the benefit of all your practical experience. Thanks, Blackie, keep up the good work!

    QUESTION REBUTTAL
    Another possibility of the hammer hanging up is poor quality parts or fitting at the manufacturer.
    I recently purchased a pietta 1858 brass frame from cabellas. Got it home and noticed that the hammer had so much movement that it could catch the frame.
    I had not fired it and my local cabellas was willing to do an exchange. I checked a few at the store and they also had the same problem. ( brass or steel)
    I did finally find one that seemed acceptable. Time will tell.
    I didn’t disassemble it, but suspect that someone making the hammers is incapable of drilling a hole in a piece of metal.
    While I don’t expect these to be match grade Ferraris, I do expect them to function properly.
    My previous pietta revolvers don’t have that issue. I plan to try uberti for my next revolver purchase.

    Blackie, I truly enjoy your attention to detail and how you carefully explain yourself and how you give us plenty of options to make our old revolvers better. Thanks for your contributions. Regarding your "gathering" , I'd love to go but Kentucky is a long way to go from Idaho. I read so many folks that are upset with CZcams. I would say to all of them, it's their (Google) creation and they call the shots. We are intelligent enough to work around that. We could use other mediums to share more sensitive topics or questions or process' in blogs or frankly, an old school email campaign. Just my thoughts. I may have a different reasoning for my thoughts than those who monetize their channels because I don't monetize mine (by choice).

  • @jeepsblackpowderandlights4305

    The problem with the colt, is if you have a brass one and it has cylinder clearance to the cone of the barrel that allows the cylinder to pop up and down easily.. this allows the cylinder to slam back when the gun is fired and this is what peens out the cylinder ring it sits on the frame.. If you actually take a file and file down the cylinder pin end very slightly, you can get the wedge to go in more and this makes up some of the clearance, keeping you from damaging the brass frame, and youre able to use higher powder loads safely. But if there isnt enough clearance it will cause the cylinder not to be able to spin anymore from fouling.. I personally shaved some off the butt with the two pins the barrel goes on, and the cylinder pin head.. to make the clearance.. My brand new brass 1851 has wayy to much clearance where i could slam the cylinder up and down with a very noticable audible click and i could fit my finger nail between the cylinder and the cone of the barrel.. This did allow the gun to fire 3 or so times "18 times" before it fouled up enough to cause the cylinder to bind.. but i noticed peening of the cylinder ring on the frame after only 2 times on the range.
    So id rather have the fouling bind the cylinder after 6-12 shots than peen the brass frame from the cylinder being too lose. It only takes a second to remove the barrel and wipe the fouling off and then reload

    Were you ever able to shoot the Revolving Carbines or Shotguns from Colt? I had a friend that needed to sell a 1855 Carbine from his collection and offered a 6 shot .44 Carbine but I made an offer on an 18" .56 Caliber 5 shot Carbine which he finally accepted. (He had a 10 gauge version but would not part with the shotgun for any price.) It was really loose but Old Man Nymo a Welder in Tucson (many years back) bronze brazed a few areas and tightened the thing up to what he felt were safe tolerances but would still not freeze up when fouled by shooting Goex. It was a blast to shoot but spit lead and unburned powder like crazy. I imagine it was quite the fighting rifle in it's day.
    I used to go to the Old West shoots in Old West attire with a Star Conversion in .44 Henry RF Flat and a .56 Caliber 1855 Colt Revolving Carbine, it was about the only place I could shoot them and nobody complained about dodging the hanging clouds of acrid smoke that hung in the air after firing them...

    I've seen videos and read comments of folks who will only load 5 chambers in their C&B revolvers. Some because of cowboy action, others because there are no safety notches between chambers. I bought a Pietta .44 on an 1851 Navy-style steel frame. The cylinder has safety notches, as does the spare I bought. What is your opinion of loading all 6 chambers and resting the hammer on the safety notch between nipples? Bad idea? Okay idea? Either or? And of course I mean that there are no caps on the nipples. QUESTION: How much effect on velocity in black powder sixshootera does cylinder to barrel gap has? I've seen some studies but they focused only on modern smokeless revolvers. Impact seems to be significant only between no gap and a gap and then stays more or less constant up to the gapes of over 0.008 inch. Above this gap width velocity seems to be lost rapidly.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  Před 4 lety +1

      i am coming from a modern gun cyl gap / loss mind set as well and applying it to cap and ball revolvers..i have seen it effect power but usually by then the gap is so large from a shot out gun its one of many issues..where i do see it being a point is when the gap is uneven from chambers this will effect point of impact..since 1,2,3 were say close and 4,5, were tighter..slight change in pressure ..equal slight change in power..thus impact change..but you only really see this on a gun thats fully tuned and is shooting tight groups then those flyers really stand out

      On a rifle I use clear finger nail polish on the cap and where the nipple screws in. That seals it up good, and some electrical tape to seal the muzzle. You could do the same on your pistol with the finger nail polish and bore butter for your cylinders, no tape.

      what chris cross said is correct i have also used wax ..but most of all i try hard to keep the revolver covered when its raining.is the ball is a good fit and a wad is used over the powder they are pretty water resistant..usuallly

    QUESTION: After taking apart my 1858 and sanding/polishing the internals, I now notice the cylinder spins too freely, with only very quiet clicking if at all. Getting to half-cock position is mushy and inexact, but full cock always works and it is still safe and aligned just fine. It is a Pietta and I did notice that I had to screw-in the Hand&spring because it was loose in there, but worked better that way? (Was the revolver worn-in to prefer a loose handspring now?) Thanks

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  Před 4 lety +1

      usually the hand spring would be the prob..its doing its job but not holding tight to the cyl.a new one may have more force and do better.. you may have polished the half cock notch too much and its sliding by it..i would suggest taking a small file and cut the notch a tad deeper so half cock seems more solid

      @@BLACKIETHOMAS Thank you, it definitely seems to have worsened since I polished around the hammer+notches, it wasn't perfect when new for that matter. Looks like you are right that it is 2 separate problems near each other. I will fiddle with this handspring, one broke in there before, showing that fine tuning is still needed. Fragile springs.

    How long can I keep a cleaned revolver loaded? I would hate to carry it and have to shoot it often to keep from the powder corroding the cylinder. I mean I’m not going to leave it loaded for months at a time just maybe a game season or few trips, thank you

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS

      Just my 2 cents worth. I purposely left my 1860 loaded cylinders sealed with 50/50 bees wax/Crisco for 9 months in the house. It functioned and fired all 6 like it was just now loaded. No evidence of rust either. I occasionally inspected it during the wait.

    • @BLACKIETHOMAS
      @BLACKIETHOMAS  Před 4 lety

      usually a heavy trigger pull comes from a hammer/ trigger sear notch thats too deep and makes the hammer have to leverage out,,...here is a way to check..with the gun unloaded..capp a nipple and bring it in line to fire..now hold the gun very still you may want to have you hands supported with something..now very slowly pull the trigger and watch the hammer not the sights does the hammer move ? like its going further back toward full cock then pop it goes forward to hit cap..if so a careful polish of the notch may make the problem go away..as to conv. cyl i believe they do or they did in the past..i seem to recall it was to a 38 short..or 380

    QUESTION: My mainspring in a Pietta 1851 in .44 has broken. Upon reinstall, I had to loosen the screw significantly to get it back under the hammer roller. Once installed, added the grips and cycled the action several times WITHOUT dry-firing, and heard a pop. Of course the trigger failed and disassembly revealed the spring broken almost exactly in half.
    What did I do wrong?
    I’ve ordered two replacements that supposedly fit this and other colts; I understand that replacements may require alteration. Any tips appreciated!

    QUESTION do you have a video on the best cleaning solution for fouling or cleaning your revolver after shooting?

    • @ToreDL87
      @ToreDL87 Před 4 lety +1

      Well they used water back in the day, then dried it, then oiled it afterwards (WD-40 works nice on all of my guns).
      And that was with inferior metallurgy and people basically giving zero hecks and still we have surviving examples of their guns, fully functional.
      I see no reason why that shouldn't work today? :)

How critical is it to have the ball seated just below the cylinder cone before it enters the forcing cone on the barrel? I use Pyrodex Pellets .44 cal X 30 grain and a lubricated wad between the pellet and ball. The spacing below the cylinder cone is about 1/4 inch. Charles Durrett the cap is what ignites the powder by putting it on first you open the yourself up to the risk of having a accidental discharge while loading the cylinders. Hope this helps it’s also very important we all want your hands to remain intact.
