- If you live in the Southeast, you might wonder where the best skiing is in North Carolina? Living in Athens, Georgia my family and I have consistently chosen Cataloochee Ski Area as our favorite.
From the Athens or north Georgia area, the drive is not only very easy, but usually takes only about 3 hours to get there. We leave Athens at 5am, stop for breakfast in Clayton, Georgia (halfway), and then arrive around 8:15am, park and are one of the first ones on the slopes.
Another key is to go during the week. It's more affordable (less than $400 for our family of five to get lift tickets and ski rentals), and way less crowded than on the weekends or holidays.
Five out of five stars. Would highly recommend!

Cant wait to go! Im going on the 19th : )
Best place to eat up there is Country Vittles restaurant!
Keep rockin', man!
Gonna have to remember that for our next trip. Thx for the tip!
I'm from NE Florida and every summer for 4 years straight my family and I stay in Brevard, NC to mountain bike and hike. I know nothing about the cold and skiing lol, but I'd like to try it in the winter at Cataloochee. Would you suggest it for a family starting out to try?
100% yes. Back in 2019, we took our kids there to learn to ski bc we had a trip planned out to Colorado during spring break. Try comparing ski school at Cataloochee vs Colorado and you’ll save a ton of money. Plus kids are quick learners anyway.
@@JawaviFilms awesome, thank you so much! even better that we can drive to NC as opposed to having to fly to colorado or out west etc. which months would you recommend the best?
@@itr0863 January. Watch the weather and wait for a cold snap so you can make sure all lifts and runs are open, especially the terrain park. Even better if it's mid-week bc the crowds will be less.
@@JawaviFilms thank you so much for the information. i'll plan on it next year! take care! keep up the videos!
Right, I’m planning my trip for this weekend and looking for hotels is 😵💫😵💫
Any tips on where to stay?
We’ve always made day trips from Athens. However, the ski area is in the town of Maggie Valley, and there seem to be a ton of places to stay. My guess would be an AirBnb.
We found a place in Maggie valley by lake junaluska only 99 a night air BnB. Sleeps 6. See you on the slopes the 26th/27th 🎿🤙
