So I personally know Chris. Both my husband and I used to work with him at Crown, the car dealership where he was a Service Advisor prior to going on American Idol. Yes, he had a band that he played with for several years at several local bars in Greensboro, NC but especially the Clubhouse every Friday night. One of the band members became one of the band members of Daughtry. The other members of his original group weren't able to uproot their lives, which is why they didn't go on to join Daughtry. And Yes...Chris took a leave of absence to be on American Idol. In fact, there are several dealerships under the Crown name but when American Idol was on all the TV's in all the buildings were turned on to the show so that the moment everyone could immediately start calling in and vote for Chris we could. Everyone on all lots stopped what they were doing to immediately to vote for Chris and support him.
Adam Lambert is phenomenal! His chemistry with Queen is priceless! I'm still amazed at how fast the next American branch of the Rhapsody tour sold out! I love how much Dr. Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor absolutely adore him! It's with excellent reason that Dr. Sir Brian himself calls Adam "The gift From God"! Also, it's not just anybody who can bring such legends as Cher to tears with a heartbreaking rendition of Believe!

I quit watching when Chris daughtry lost cuz in my opinion it showed me it was rigged. Gave it a second chance with Adam lambert and after he lost I stopped watching and never looked back

I stopped watching after Adam Lambert came in second, as he was so clearly a star whenever he performed. In the end, I suspect he was better off since he had more creative control on his first album than he would have under and Idol contract.
I remember when I saw Daughtry audition, I said out to everyone that he’s gonna be huge in music. There’s so much more beyond talent, there’s a gravitas (an X factor) that he has.
From a UK perspective this is fascinating - Adam Lambert and Jennifer Hudson are true global superstars with undeniable talent and charisma and love the rest will definitely check out some of their music ❤❤❤

I think Adam Lambert is otherworldly. He is probably the best singer ever on any of these shows. Thing is though, from what I understand, it’s actually better to NOT win as you don’t get tied into a contract. But when he performed with Queen it was hilarious because you could tell that Brian May was thinking, “We just found our singer.”
They already knew they wanted him, but they couldn't ask just him to perform on the show. Also, he did have a year contract, hence why he didn't go out immediately with them. Idr where I heard this, but it was from Brian May.

Chris Daughtry and Adam Lambert should've won their respective seasons. They're both phenomenal and amazing singers. It shocked me and a lot of others when Daughtry finished 4th place and Adam became the runner-up. At least there were a few actual winners in the past seasons that became successful singers and household names.
Little did we know that not winning was the true win. A lot of winners HATED their debut albums and had zero control over them. Apparently, it was misery. I think they both used the platform as the launching pad it's meant to be for the real talent that walks on that stage. Kelly and Carrie got lucky, being able to establish themselves in spite of the constraints.
These types of talent shows are great because you don't have to win in order to "win". Getting seen or heard by the right people who can further your career is more important than the top prize . . . and in some cases can be better because the artist has more freedom to choose.
I really hated the way Simon treated Linsey Stirling. I was yelling at my screen, Shut up you fool! Just listen! I’m glad she had the success that she had.

When I auditioned for idol season 7 I made it before the judges. During filming day I stood in line with David Archuleta. It was amazing to see his career blossom.
Clay Aiken sold more records & made more millions touring than most of the folks on this list. To relegate him to "honorable mention" is completely laughable. Whoever compiled this is obviously very young &/or failed to do their research. I do agree that Jennifer is #1, however.
I agree with you. Clay Aiken can belt high notes. His vocal range is unbelievable & very powerful. He should have won but votes for Clay were jammed , can't get thru. It became very controversial at that time as there's only one line to call. Even music Industry professionals praised him. I wish young generations would watch AI season 2 finale Clay Aiken's greatest performance.
I haven’t watched American Idol, because I don’t live in the US. But it is the crime of the CENTURY that Todrick Hall and Adam Lambert didn’t win their respective seasons. I mean, they’re probably both better off for it but STILL! Adam Lambert is one of the most talented and underrated vocalists alive! And Todrick is also UNBELIEVABLY talented! Ugh!🙄😒😤
it's been 14yrs since AI for Adam, it's a non issue. I had no idea Todrick was on AI I've seen him on Broadway and Pentatonix video with Lindsey Stirling. Very talented guy.

Not winning doesn't matter, it's what u do with the experience and exposure that matters.

Pickler, Daughtry, Hudson and Lambert were my bets for their respective (had 2 for Season 5, because that season really had a good pool of artists), but yeah, they didn't win. Happy they're thriving.
I don't watch talent shows so I had never seen any of these people on the show. I was invited to a Daughtry concert by an aunt and said sure, I love live music and she has good taste. After the show I learned he had been on the show and was surprised he hadn't won.
Adam Lambert and Gabby Barrett both should have won their seasons, and not surprisingly there was controversy and rumors of rigging the results both of those seasons. In Gabby's season during the final round of competition, Katy Perry openly campaigned for Maddie Poppe and actually pulled out her cell phone ON THE AIR to vote for Maddie, who won. There is no way Katy's actions didn't influence the results. In Adam's season, he was easily the best but was also openly and flamboyantly gay. Yet somehow Kris Allen, the "safe" pick, won. By the way, you missed that Gabby won multiple CMA and ACM awards for her debut album, and she has a second album in the works.
It's laughable how Arkansas' 2.8 population in 2009 managed to accomplish voting 38m during their voting parties which started early on the competition. Winners of wide screen TV'S, Chick-fil-A and other prices didn't even support his Album, no wonder RCA dropped him in 2012, the same year Adam Lambert's 2nd Album debuted #1 on BILLBOARD 200 and insured his voice for 48million. kris knew an AT&T employee distributed free cphones and provided instructions on how to speed dial, block Adam Lambert's voters. kris is a backstabber, pretended to be a friend while participating in those voting parties for him, he deserves his name..kris if you know what that is. That AT&T employee was fired after the finale, moved out of Arkansas, was introduced to me, he averted his eyes and slinked away like a 🐛.
My fav Adam! I love Gabby, Daughtry, J Hudson, Kelly pickler, Colton D, Clay, Tori K.. so many great singers that didn't win! My fav of winners are Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, David Cook, Fantasia.. Don't remember most of the winners.. My favorite of Judges were the 3 originals, later J Lopez and the 2 men with her.. I am so tired of Katy P and other 2 men currently judging American Idol.

I can't believe you didn't at least mention Lauren Daigle! She tried out for American Idol twice, and got eliminated both times, and still became a huge star with incredibly popular songs. They've even brought her back on the show.

Lauren, Adam and Chris should have won. There is a reason Chris's elimination was so shocking. It's because when we called to vote, the recorded message said thank you for voting for Taylor Hicks. He was straight up robbed that night. It's okay though.. Taylor who? He's nowhere to be found.
I've listened to Adam Lambert and am most impressed by his vocal prowess and I remember watching Chris Daughtry during his season and was just as shocked as he was by his elimination. I like Lauren Alaina and her vocals, but I think the right person won in her season (Scotty McCreery was just one step ahead of her), but that doesn't take away from her own success (I love her song The Road Less Travelled). My belief is that Clay Aiken should have won over Ruben Studdard and it would have changed the trajectory of his career choices. His sexual identity may have played a factor (same with Adam Lambert), but don't get me wrong there; sexual identity to me is nothing because we are all human beings first, but shows like this think (and I stress the word "think") they need to protect their franchise by not allowing a gay winner. Who cares???!! Barry Manilow and Elton John had stellar careers during an era when homosexuality was bashed in every way possible, yet look where they are now?? This is a far different era, so American Idol needs to step up to the plate and embrace performers for their talent, not for who they are behind the scenes (unless, of course, they are egregiously horrible people that will represent the brand name in a negative way).
Jennifer Hudson was my favorite the year she was on American Idol. Back then we could listen to repeats of the performances on the AI website. I used to play hers over and over. I thought she was so talented and also very warm and down to earth. She put up with a lot of nasty comments from Simon. It has always made me very happy that despite an early elimination, she has had the broadest success of any AI contestant.
Adam was definitely a shock when he didn’t win and Jennifer sure was too! But look at them now, they stay positive and kept working hard and they are reaping the rewards!
Adam is really, really good at what he does. Was stunned when he didn't win. However, I was even more stunned when Clay Aiken came in second in his year. He was hugely successful for years, and I am so sorry he went into politics, as he lost me there.

Nice list. Haley is the one I've listened to more than any of the others. Adam and Chris are exceptional male singers I've always listened to. Jennifer is so great! Hard to believe she finished 8th, yet got all the awards. Pick Pickler...who could love her.

He was already from day one better than many recording artists. what makes me mad is Simon's reactions to his performances. Simon reacted as if he was an ordinary contestant. He was jealous of him. David Archuleta is one of the best. So many albums ,also runner up on Masked Singer, tv show success in Philippines, and recently won an award. Go David go.
How is Colton Dixon NOT on this list? He went on to become a super successful Christian artist after going home way too early on Season 11. Clay Aiken should've been on the actual list- but oddly I forgot about him and I own three of his albums (although his debut was by far the best). Chris Daughtry- omg- definitely a huge success despite not winning the show. The three albums I own of his are amazing :D
Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry deserved to win their seasons; NO QUESTION! But so did Clay Aiken, and I am shocked he is not on in the top ten! His first album, "Messure of a Man", went double platinum, and he had two top ten singles; including the number one single of 2003, with "This is the Night/Bridge Over Troubled Water." He also had a very successful Broadway debut in Spamamolot, back in 2007. All of these things make him more successful than the majority of people on this list. Whether like style of music or not. Even if you think he is just too old fashioned. He has easily earned a top five spot in your top ten and not just an honorable mention!
Well, I would have put Adam Lambert first with Jennifer Hudson as a close second. To front Queen for 10 years now and have a solo career is just a slice above. He's also been in shows and is currently writing a broadway musical (which I will crawl across the country to see if I have to). Jennifer Hudson is just amazing, so absolutely no disRESPECT. I would have put Daughtry third for sure, and McPhee 4th. Either one of them should have beaten Taylor Hicks. He seems like a great guy, but a terrible Idol winner.

Let's face it--the only reason Adam Lambert lost was because he is gay. Even Kris Allen was surprised. If he competed maybe 5 years later, more enlightened audiences would have voted him the winner. He has achieved more than a majority of winners, He has an astounding voice, multiplatinum sales, 5 albums and a 6th on the way along with a forthcoming broadway show, incoming tour in October as Queens frontman, and many solo tours. Not winning doesn't matter, it's what u do with the experience and exposure that matters.
It's always relevant because it's always mentioned 99% of the time when anything about Adam Lambert is discussed live on TV worldwide since 2009 up to date..2023 and gives failed kris free advertisements. Even on the 2019 NETFLIX MOVIE The Show Must Go On.

No disrespect to Hudson but she spends her time as hosts on various singing competitions while Lambert is out touring with Queen. Not to mention Lambert's covers of Believe at the Kennedy Center and his cover of Bowie's Starman and probably two of the best covers ever.
Kris Allen. I believe it is because he had broader appeal and snagged Danny Gokey's fans once he was eliminated.

Pickler, Daughtry, Hudson and Lambert were my bets for their respective (had 2 for Season 5, because that season really had a good pool of artists), but yeah, they didn't win. Happy they're thriving.
Don't get me wrong they're all very talented. My favorites are Chris Daughtry David archuleta Clay Aiken and Jennifer Hudson.
I don't watch talent shows so I had never seen any of these people on the show. I was invited to a Daughtry concert by an aunt and said sure, I love live music and she has good taste. After the show I learned he had been on the show and was surprised he hadn't won.
Adam Lambert and Gabby Barrett both should have won their seasons, and not surprisingly there was controversy and rumors of rigging the results both of those seasons. In Gabby's season during the final round of competition, Katy Perry openly campaigned for Maddie Poppe and actually pulled out her cell phone ON THE AIR to vote for Maddie, who won. There is no way Katy's actions didn't influence the results. In Adam's season, he was easily the best but was also openly and flamboyantly gay. Yet somehow Kris Allen, the "safe" pick, won. By the way, you missed that Gabby won multiple CMA and ACM awards for her debut album, and she has a second album in the works.
Adam lost because of cheating by Arkansas.
It's laughable how Arkansas' 2.8 population in 2009 managed to accomplish voting 38m during their voting parties which started early on the competition. Winners of wide screen TV'S, Chick-fil-A and other prices didn't even support his Album, no wonder RCA dropped him in 2012, the same year Adam Lambert's 2nd Album debuted #1 on BILLBOARD 200 and insured his voice for 48million. kris knew an AT&T employee distributed free cphones and provided instructions on how to speed dial, block Adam Lambert's voters. kris is a backstabber, pretended to be a friend while participating in those voting parties for him, he deserves his name..kris if you know what that is. That AT&T employee was fired after the finale, moved out of Arkansas, was introduced to me, he averted his eyes and slinked away like a 🐛.
My fav Adam! I love Gabby, Daughtry, J Hudson, Kelly pickler, Colton D, Clay, Tori K.. so many great singers that didn't win! My fav of winners are Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, David Cook, Fantasia.. Don't remember most of the winners.. My favorite of Judges were the 3 originals, later J Lopez and the 2 men with her.. I am so tired of Katy P and other 2 men currently judging American Idol.
I love Daughtry. I loved when I first seen him on AI, and have followed him since.

Nah out of those that didn't win Jennifer is by far the most successful though Adam Lambert is still and probably will always be my favorite him Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, and JHud are really the only ones I like from the show

I can't believe you didn't at least mention Lauren Daigle! She tried out for American Idol twice, and got eliminated both times, and still became a huge star with incredibly popular songs. They've even brought her back on the show.

Lauren, Adam and Chris should have won. There is a reason Chris's elimination was so shocking. It's because when we called to vote, the recorded message said thank you for voting for Taylor Hicks. He was straight up robbed that night. It's okay though.. Taylor who? He's nowhere to be found.
I've listened to Adam Lambert and am most impressed by his vocal prowess and I remember watching Chris Daughtry during his season and was just as shocked as he was by his elimination. I like Lauren Alaina and her vocals, but I think the right person won in her season (Scotty McCreery was just one step ahead of her), but that doesn't take away from her own success (I love her song The Road Less Travelled). My belief is that Clay Aiken should have won over Ruben Studdard and it would have changed the trajectory of his career choices. His sexual identity may have played a factor (same with Adam Lambert), but don't get me wrong there; sexual identity to me is nothing because we are all human beings first, but shows like this think (and I stress the word "think") they need to protect their franchise by not allowing a gay winner. Who cares???!! Barry Manilow and Elton John had stellar careers during an era when homosexuality was bashed in every way possible, yet look where they are now?? This is a far different era, so American Idol needs to step up to the plate and embrace performers for their talent, not for who they are behind the scenes (unless, of course, they are egregiously horrible people that will represent the brand name in a negative way).

Jennifer Hudson was my favorite the year she was on American Idol. Back then we could listen to repeats of the performances on the AI website. I used to play hers over and over. I thought she was so talented and also very warm and down to earth. She put up with a lot of nasty comments from Simon. It has always made me very happy that despite an early elimination, she has had the broadest success of any AI contestant.

Adam is really, really good at what he does. Was stunned when he didn't win. However, I was even more stunned when Clay Aiken came in second in his year. He was hugely successful for years, and I am so sorry he went into politics, as he lost me there.
Adam Lambert's win was stolen from him. Thank God Queen saw his immense talent and signed him on to be the lead singer! In my opinion, Adam Lambert was the most talented of all the contestants that didn't win.

Nice list. Haley is the one I've listened to more than any of the others. Adam and Chris are exceptional male singers I've always listened to. Jennifer is so great! Hard to believe she finished 8th, yet got all the awards. Pick Pickler...who could love her.
Adam Lambert was on whole another level. Way higher quality performance than any Idols. He was already from day one better than many recording artists. what makes me mad is Simon's reactions to his performances. Simon reacted as if he was an ordinary contestant. He was jealous of him. In my opinion Simon wasn't a good judge. People thinks he was good because he was harsh.

How is Colton Dixon NOT on this list? He went on to become a super successful Christian artist after going home way too early on Season 11. Clay Aiken should've been on the actual list- but oddly I forgot about him and I own three of his albums (although his debut was by far the best). Chris Daughtry- omg- definitely a huge success despite not winning the show. The three albums I own of his are amazing :D

Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry deserved to win their seasons; NO QUESTION! But so did Clay Aiken, and I am shocked he is not on in the top ten! His first album, "Messure of a Man", went double platinum, and he had two top ten singles; including the number one single of 2003, with "This is the Night/Bridge Over Troubled Water."
He also had a very successful Broadway debut in Spamamolot, back in 2007. All of these things make him more successful than the majority of people on this list. Whether like style of music or not. Even if you think he is just too old fashioned. He has easily earned a top five spot in your top ten and not just an honorable mention!

Well, I would have put Adam Lambert first with Jennifer Hudson as a close second. To front Queen for 10 years now and have a solo career is just a slice above. He's also been in shows and is currently writing a broadway musical (which I will crawl across the country to see if I have to). Jennifer Hudson is just amazing, so absolutely no disRESPECT. I would have put Daughtry third for sure, and McPhee 4th. Either one of them should have beaten Taylor Hicks. He seems like a great guy, but a terrible Idol winner.

I only knew that Clay Aiken finished 2nd on the 2003 season. I don't even know who won that season. I just know Clay Aiken because has went on Donald Trumps reality show.
Clay Aekin's vocal range is awesome. He chose a classic song on AI season 2 finale Bridge Over Troubled Water his greatest performance. Votes for Clay were jammed.... I am one those trying to get in but couldn't. He should be #1.

Let's face it--the only reason Adam Lambert lost was because he is gay. Even Kris Allen was surprised. If he competed maybe 5 years later, more enlightened audiences would have voted him the winner.
