  • Today i felt like a little ride, so i walked from Tekniska Högskolan and i walked to Stockholm Östra and took the classic Roslagsbanan.
Roslagsbanan is a narrow gauge urban railway system in Roslagen, Stockholm County, Sweden. Its combined route length is 65 kilometres (40 miles) and there are 38 stations. It is built to the Swedish three foot (891 mm or 2 ft 11+3⁄32 in) gauge.
The line starts in Stockholm at Stockholm East Station (Stockholms östra station, Stockholm Ö). It goes north and splits into three branch lines at the junction stations Djursholms Ösby and Roslags Näsby; the three branches terminate at Näsbypark, Österskär and Kårsta.
It is double track between Stockholm and Viggbyholm and between Rydbo and Åkersberga. The rest is single track, but the line to Vallentuna was being doubled in 2012[needs update] and Rydbo-Åkers Runö in 2013[needs update]. There are passing loops at some stations on the single track sections: at Altorp, Hägernäs, Österskär, Visinge, Täby kyrkby, Ormsta, Lindholmen and Kårsta.
Following a 2017 agreement between the Swedish state, Stockholm County, and the affected municipalities, the line will be extended to the centrally located underground hub T-Centralen, with construction to begin in approximately 2022.[10]

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It has the most populous urban area in Sweden as well as in Scandinavia. 1 million people live in the municipality, approximately 1.6 million in the urban area, and 2.4 million in the metropolitan area. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County.

Roslagsbanan is a remnant of a network with unusual (unique actually) track gauge, 891 mm.

I was intrigued by your comment yesterday about the train journey from Universitetet to Akersberga, and I later found a video of the train journey going all the way from Akersberga to Stockholms Östra. In the first part of that video there was a Greek couple chatting away which I found interesting. Nice to see these old trains still in use.

Roslagsbanan = Roslagen, that is the area to where these trains travel to (north east of Stockholm). Banan, that translates to ”the track”, or something like that.
So light rail is not a correct translation if you ask me. But the rail width is much smaller than compared to regular rail, so they can’t run bigger and heavier trains. So that is probably why they choose this translation.

Yes fully agree, it is a funny name but some signs do use that name. Thanks for the explanation 🙏🏻🇸🇪

    Thanks for the walk/ride.
In Japan you don't talk on the phone while on the train.
In scandinavia you don't sit next to other people if other seats are available.

Yes, very true! However I usually ask politely while smiling:” ursäkta, får jag sitta här?” (Excuse me, may I sit here?) Then they usually say yes. :D
But usually it is perfectly fine to stand as long as there are not too many people standing
