Well, the point is, that the feeling is mutual, they both are each other's friend, who can share a drink and dine with, comrade, who you can rely on when things go sour, and a rival, they both would like nothing more than to know who would come on top in their rivaly.
In the first and second times Serpico tried to kill Guts, they were enemies so it was understandable. In third times, serpico wasn't really try to kill Guts, he just wanted to protect Farnese so it also understandable.
