"You gon get that scholarship, cuz I AINT GOT IT !!!! " 😂😂😂
Brah the struggle
I swear!
Daddy had her back, lol.
Lmfaoo dead
RIGHT! You can literally hear her Dad's voice when she said it.
Hero of the story is the father.
It's her, actually, but the father was definitely major when he convinced her to go present her portfolio anyway
Don't forget those cousins!
Fasho
maybe it's her , her father be the sidekick
I think it's both. But I think the father played a huge part in how she turned out. Especially since her mom left her at 12.
As a African American man THIS is the kind of story telling I grew UP on around the kitchen table. It will have you laughing like crazy then having you crying and feeling inspired at the end! Loved this !!
SokBoxProductions yes indeed. I teared up and laughed out loud and hollered too. This took me back. Wonderful storytelling. Wonderful woman

I just thought it was relatable
She’s like that aunty that always visits with a hilarious story, this is one of my favorite delivery styles she’s great!
True! She's not afraid to speak her mind.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Some comics are great joke tellers and others are great story tellers. This woman is a fucking killer of a story teller. It takes more to make a hard story into a funny story to than to tell a joke and she killed it
Agreed. This is so good because it's true.
My favorite auntie got me hi AF when I was 14 with some gunk she brought back from Turkey lol
@@brucekirk5386 my Aunt (youngest of my dad's 5 sisters) first got me stoned at 14 too. I lived with her for 2yrs during my parents nasty bitter war of a divorce.
Your father is a good man.
i teared up at the part where he helped her put her portfolio back together
facts
He is indeed
VERY!
I got a job as a makeup artist on a movie. I asked my Dad if I could use his department store discount in order to buy some make up brushes and he told me, "No". I totally had the look at the phone moment. Do you know he later bragged to everyone that I had a job in film and that he bought the brushes for me? These people never want to help but always ready to bask in your glow. BPhlat I can totally relate.
Or a father who didn't help you go to college but who loved looking like the good dad who was responsible?
Glad that you got through in spite of your dad. CTG always says 'hurt people hurt people'.

TheFilmbroad Thatz a narcissistic parent for ya...
Me I'm like no u didn't.
Here's the twisted thing. I bet you those 4 white people critiquing her portfolio thought all those footprints and distress on the pieces were intentional. As if to say a beautiful black woman is stepped on and degraded by society but still the beauty shines through. Whatever they thought, I'm glad they gave her the chance to prove herself. Some parents just don't deserve the love of their children. Good thing her father came through and helped.
CJ and Auntie Yaya stop bringing race into things.
@Jack Percy you guys are the snowflakes always crying about problems not there
@Jack Percy Neanderthals were very intelligent with large brains. It is a misconception that they were dumb. Science has proven this otherwise for a couple of decades already, but people still believe the old thinking. Those white folks thought it was a critique of how black people have been treated in our society. Being biracial makes it frustrating to see the hate back and forth.
@icepop clean, I think it is absolutely necessary to bring up the race topic, especially since B-Phlat herself applied it multiple times in her story. The more often we speak of it, no matter the controversy behind it, the easier it will be to talk about it at all. Attempting to bury it or censor it is pretty much the same as leaving a pot of rice boiling on the back burner. Imagine being told to not bring up the things that really matter to you, I'm pretty sure you'd have none of that right?
Good grief.
1. Her hair IS art.
2. She nearly took me out laughing! She's gonna be somebody mama on a show, soon!

I like how she danced around the sadness of the situation. Like she used comedy to paint a silouette of a sad, slightly macabre, relationship
BADAZZTHANG Not all comedy is rooted in tragedy. That's really just a more recent thing. Seinfeld and all his clones found comedy in the mundane, not tragic. Chaplin, the stooges, and Mr bean found comedy in the physical. Monty Python found it in the absurd, but yes some comedy is based in tragedy.
I think even 40% is pushing it. Comedy doesn't depend on tragedy as much as you think. They certainly go well together, probably the best comedy comes from tragedy, but not nearly all of it.
BADAZZTHANG Just answer this and you win... what is tragic about the comedy bit "who's on first?" Arguably one of the most famous comedy bits in American history. Hell, what's tragic about a fart during a test? You're only focusing on one aspect of comedy and claiming that "comedy is nothing more than the flower of tragedy". That strips comedy of its fullness.
And yes some of the best comedians have had tragic lives but that goes for a lot of great Artists in general, not just comedians. They became comedians because that's who they were. The shit in their life probably fueled them to succeed but not to be funny.
All comedy is based on tragedy one way or another. Who's on first is fueled by the audience basically feeling superior than the morons who are pulling off the joke. There's no comedy in heaven, because there is no material. You don't laugh at someone hurting themself in heaven. My two cents, but you're wrong if you think differently. When you laugh at someone farting during a test, you're laughing to shake off the awkwardness of feeling the social pain of farting in public during something important.
"WE" really don't have time to appreciate the level of sadness cause "WE" gotta survive. Reality. Rather our reality. Those scars build shields tho in the end.
The Daddy stuff melted my heart, won't lie. He had her back and then some. Pays to have at least ONE parent who has your back.
I love this whole TINH series!
The part with the College Interview would make a great scene in a classic Spike Joint.
That's how my mother would get back at me... she'd ruin my art. This hit home big time. I laughed so hard and had maybe one little tear fall. Well done.
Mine as well. She would always ball up, crumple, or literally trash my art (throw it in the trash!) in front of me. We have been no contact for 6 years now and I have never felt better. Love to you and others who can relate 💕

Great story of overcoming adversity. Can't imagine having a mother like that.
Kim Dean i had one just like that
lentrell smith bless u
I can. The second she said her mom wanted to see the portfolio alarm bells rang for me
My whole life has improved from listening to this
I can relate to her story so much because it is a lot like my story. A lot of folks have a deadbeat dad, but I had a mother that wasn't really shit and she acted just like this woman's mother. She said I wasn't ever gonna be shit. Well, I guess she can see from her grave that I have a college degree in Graphic Design, my own business and I'm married with 5 beautiful children and the thanks go to my grandmother, grandfather, and father. I make sure I am nothing like to her to my own children.
It's nice to hear something positive about our wonderful, strong, sane men of the world
I’m going to college for graphic design :)
This story is so much funnier when you have the cultural collateral to relate! Sooo funny, meaningful and inspiring!
Nema Katt absolutely, having a parent like that whose existence is a trial in your life, and continues to do you wrong no matter what-it’s no way to live with family, but it’s inspiring to see anyone overcome that
I like it "cutural collateral to relate." I am so blessed, thankful and thoughtful for my cultural experiences, that
enables me to appreciate what so many others have gone through and speak to with there comedy.
This story is both hilarious and sad because it's relatable!
"Cultural collateral"...damn. Good stuff right there.
facts
This is by far one of the most unflinching open and well told stories I've heard from this show.
It really is art that self portrait was stomped on. That's what completes it. She saw herself and although she got stomped on by people trying to hold her back she ended up showing the beauty in success against those odds. I hope that's why it took them 20 minutes to look at her stuff. I hope that footprint was the mark that made it unique, just like this story. I'd love to see that portrait.
Mike McDaniel agreed! But it was wasn’t the footprint that completed it, it was her talent and drive in-spite of that footprint
Sure, just as much as the story on stage is the cherry on top.
Mike McDaniel yes! Her story and comedy is a continuation of her art. Powerful stuff
I’d love to see that portrait too
I thought the exact same thing. When she was talking about putting that portrait up on the easel with a footprint on it, I almost started tearing up. It's like that footprint was always an unintentional but inescapable part of her life and inspiration, and putting it on her self-portrait showed her experience to other people in a way that she may not have been able to convey as effectively on her own.
I hope that footprint is the thing that got her the scholarship, if only to spite her mother for the hardship she caused.
I love her dad. He real n I'm happy he tried.

See, she addressed family dysfunction as a Black American, and just showed just how relatable those experiences truly are regardlessof demographics. The jokes were hilarious and humanizing, and familiar and refreshing in the right ways! There are some directors and screenwriters (Black and otherwise) that just haven't found that balance of funny (almost unreal ridiculousness) and thoughtful when it comes to telling stories about Black but tbis gem of a woman *nailed* it!
