    I've had audio issues like many others, with both video recordings having no audio, as well as static/crackling/popping sounds. My setup is a Hero5 Black with the (ridiculous) GoPro mic adapter, paired with an Edutige ETM-001 microphone (awesome affordable mic, available on Amazon). I too thought it was a defective microphone, or perhaps the connection where the adapter plugs into the camera or possibly a defective mic adapter. After much trial and error, reading online, and doing countless test recordings I discovered that to remedy the silent issue, go into Preferences, scroll down to QuikCapture, and turn it OFF. This means you no longer can power on and start video recording with a single press of the shutter release button (on top of the camera); you now have to power on the camera with the side "Mode" button, then start/stop video with the top button. To get rid of the crackling/popping/static noise, go into "Connect" (same screen as Preferences), scroll down to "Wireless Connections" and turn it OFF (icon will turn grey when off). Apparently its the WiFi signals interfering that cause the static sound so you have to shut off all wireless connections (including that on your phone if you are using that as a controller). Also, to set up your external microphone, first plug it and the mic adapter into the camera (otherwise it will show up as "N/A" in the menu), go into Preferences menu, scroll down to "Audio Input" and select "Standard Microphone" (the "Standard Microphone+" is also good but, with the decibel boost, can sometimes pick up too much background noise). Overall, definitely not the way one would hope to get decent audio but the results are fantastic audio, the way it should sound. As many have said GoPro really dropped the ball on this one when a firmware update could have resolved the issue. If you're outdoors in any sort of breeze, be sure to use a foam (or better yet) a "dead cat" windscreen on your microphone; makes a huge difference. Hope this helps.
    UPDATE: after reading some other comments, I realized I neglected to mention one VERY important point: be sure you have the right type of microphone for your GoPro. It must have a 3.5mm / 3 pole plug (not a 4 pole plug that resembles an earphones plug). There are microphones that are 4 pole, but those only work on phones (that have a 3.5mm mini stereo jack) not a GoPro. The simplest way to know which is which is to count the number of black insulating bands on the plug: a 4 pole plug has three, a 3 pole plug has two. Be sure your GoPro mic has two black bands. (I was going to attach a photo to illustrate but it looks like that isn't possible.)

    Thanks for the tips - The one-touch glitch was definitely the culprit for the no-audio. I also shut off the GPS and wireless connections. I'm guessing that was the key to getting rid of the static/popping sounds. Now, all I need are some tips to get my MacBook Pro to read the USB cable so that I don't have to keep taking the card out of my camera. lol! Thanks bro!

    Yours is the best video yet on solving these problems with audio problems. I’ve gone crazy trying to fix my audio on my Hero5 with different mics different GoPro mic adapters and calling GoPro emailing etc...most of my issues you just solved by switching to standard. To low mic setting and turning off wind control. I already bought a saramonic mic way back which didn’t solve the issues till I did everything you suggested. I can’t wait to get out and start Vlogging on my Hero5Black instead of going back to my Hero3+black because of the bad audio. I’m gonna start listening to your advise instead of all the bad advise out there. Thanks I liked 👍and Subbed.

    I use a mic adapter for the GoPro and when I export my videos and upload them to CZcams or Tiktok, the sound is just static for some people while it works for others. When I play it through my phone it's just static. If I use headphones, it works. It works on a browser and tv too. I've been stumped on this for 2 years. Can you help? They don't work on TikTok at all, it's just static. Any added audio I put on the video from editing works, but the actual mic audio doesn't.

    Have you though about removing the waterproofing on your hero? I was able to get impressive results with my hero 5 after removing the waterproofing around the mics and using that protune audio files to clean everything up in post.
    As a side note, wind vs stereo doesn't matter if you're working with the raw protune audio files that are created next to the video files. It'll just save the audio that it hears to the three tracks in the raw audio.
    It's such a shame people have to go through all of this just to get decent sound. The hero 5/6 were major steps backwards in sound quality. 😔

    Two questions! Thanks for the review by the way, great content. 1) There are no audio settings for me in the preferences tab, just says NA even when my external mics are connected with the Go Pro cable. Any ideas? 2) What is one touch recording (lol)? Simple question but have not been able to confirm this. Thanks in advance!

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  Před 6 lety +1

      Issue 1) is a sign of either an issue with the cable or the gopro. Plugging in the external mic adaptor SHOULD activate the audio settings. I would check to see if you have the latest version of firmware for the gopro. That might enable it. If possible, check the cable with another Gopro. That will help you determine if the issue is the cable or the gopro. 2) one touch recording is the setting where you set the gopro to start recording once it is powered up. Just one touch. Instead of powering up and then hitting the record button.

    I'm using 2 Hero 7 blacks and a Zoom H1N to record my Son's youth rock band. The zoom audio is a half second or so off from the gopro audio / video by the end of each set (about 45 minutes). I'm using Vegas Pro 16 to edit. I sync the audio for both cameras and the zoom at the start and it gradually goes out of sync. I have to cut up and re-sync the audio for each song to keep it perfect. I tried stretching / compressing the audio to make it match but I couldn't get it to sync. I'm not sure if both gopros are off or the zoom is off. Its one or the other. I tend to trust the zoom more than the gopros. Any ideas?

      That SHOULD light up automatically once you have the adaptor plugged in. Only other thing I can think of is to make sure the firmware is up to date.

      Try this, So with camera on you 1) switch off quick start 2) switch off connectivity and then switch off camera. 3) plug in mic and adaptor into camera with camera still switched off. Now switch on GoPro, it should detect the audio Input. If it's still showing NA then with camera still on and with mic adaptor and mic connected, you open battery compartment and pull out the battery, wait 10 seconds and then put battery back in and close the battery compartment..(all this while external mic adaptor and mic is connected) now switch on GoPro and check if it shows audio Input as external mic. Message me back if it works. It worked for me.
