  • In this vid, I share the smallest decent mic you can use for vlogging! I compare it with no mic and the Rode Video Micro. Get the mic and wind muff here: Saramonic Mic -amzn.to/2wuOIgb (

    I would say the Rode Mic has overall superior audio quality. If you're vlogging was at home where you're not going to move the camera around much, or you have a rig in your car and you want to vlog outdoors it is the one to pick. However for situations where size, weight, and/or the desire to be more discrete is important than that little Saramonic Mic is very impressive. I'll take one of each to be honest. Thanks for the review.

    You bring up some great points as to why it might be better to sacrifice a little sound for convenience. I bought the rode video micro to use on my a6400 and Crane M2 gimbal. The weight of the microphone actually makes it kind of a pain to balance the camera on the gimbal. Also when wind picks up the video micro almost acts like a sail causing camera shake on the gimbal. It also prevents some functions of the gimbal. And the most annoying part it like you mentioned that you cannot quickly point the video micro to the front or the back of the camera without unscrewing it from the hot shoe. Thanks for the info!

    You should check out the VlogStar mic by Idolcam. Similar size as the Sarmonic and Similar audio to the Rode.

    Thanks, just put in an order for one. I hope you get a kickback from AMZN for making this vid!

    Nice review! FWIW, with a short audio extension cable, a 1/4" hotshoe adapter & a bit of Sugru, you could install this mic in the G85's hotshoe. Optimally, use an audio extension with an L-shaped male connection (to block as little of the flipped-out screen as possible) and glue/sugru the female connection to the hotshoe adapter vertically so you can still easily spin the mic from front-facing to back-facing. No? Just a thought...

    For the size and price, it's more than good. Great video BTW.

    Very informative video!
    May I ask what sound settings you used in the G85? All the way down?

    Have you tried this mic on a smartphone, specifically Android? I bought a Rode Videomic Me for my Android phone to up the video quality but it has some pretty terrible background noise/buzz/chatter. The actual audio is a huge improvement from the mic on my Samsung S6 but the background noise makes it unusable for anything but super loud scenes that hide it. With the Saramonic being so small it would definitely fit in my pack better!!

      I have used the TRRS version on an iPhone and was pretty pleased with the audio. Make sure to get the right version. TRS is for regular in line cameras and TRRS is for phones. You can see samples in this playlist. czcams.com/video/AP-0dpM-8_8/video.html

    The audio sounds great. Have you tested it in wind?

      Yes. Does reasonably well. Check out the Sugru hack vid we did. Has some wind tests.

    I bought this mic and really wanted it to work since it would have made balancing my gimble easier than with the rode video micro. It sounds decent although it picks ups the sound of the lens hunting on my a6400 with kit lens. You did not notice this on your camera?
    This would be great with a GoPro or maybe if it could somehow be mounted on a hot shoe where it doesn’t pick up the lens focusing noise or the sound of my thumb rotating the dial on the back of the camera.

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  Před 4 lety +1

      No prob with any Lumix lenses. Maybe the kit is just loud?

    • @wademorales
      @wademorales Před 4 lety

      Path Less Pedaled Not sure how it compares but I’ve heard that the kit lens that comes with the a6400 is pretty quiet. When I took it outside I noticed very little of the lens focusing. I think it was because there was much more distractions and other noises outside. The one thing that I heard a lot of was little Klinks and clanks. I would really love to find a little shock mount for this mic to either go on the hot shoe somehow or on the side of the camera that can illuminate those Klinks and clank‘s that I hear. The sound is great and this will work way better than my rode video micro on my gimble. Just need some kind of work around for it I think.

    I'm using the same mic on the same camera (panasonic G85) and there is a lot of static noise in the background.
    Did you have the same issue? If yes, how did you solve it?

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  Před 5 lety

      That is RF interference. Turn off WiFi. Make sure phone is in airplane mode.

      @@PathLessPedaledTV Thanks!
      Wifi is already turned off (at least I think!) and my phone was far from the camera...

    • @PathLessPedaledTV
      @PathLessPedaledTV  Před 5 lety

      Hmmm. Would dbl check the WiFi and make sure you aren’t near anything that is transmitting (Bluetooth, cellular, etc.,). On the G85 do you get static only when its quiet or throughout? Might be some sort of AGC (automatic gain control) going on?

    • @Jekkil33cm
      @Jekkil33cm Před 5 lety

      @@PathLessPedaledTV I've tried the mic with my laptop (in the same room) and there is no static sound at all. It has to be something from the camera even if I have no idea what could be. I'll double check the Wi-Fi as apparently there is no gain control active. And also, the static sound is always present, not only when it is quiet

    I want the baby tribble, but you didn't say where to buy it. Camera shop?
