Though I didn't say it in the video, remember, this review is STRICTLY about the videogame! While I haven't seen any of G5 besides the movie and now the TYT episode "Sparky's Sick", I have nothing against the new generation. All generations are valid and awesome in their own special ways 💕
Hey there. Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the game. While I certainly enjoyed it, I respect your opinion regardless. This was a very well made video. Thank you for clarifying that you don’t have anything against G5, especially in this current climate where people would take any excuse to hate on it for no reason other than preconceived biases. I completely agree. Personally, I honestly recommend you watch more of this generation and see for yourself because it really is so much better than both this game and that eldritch abomination of an episode you watched. If you’re ever feeling up to it, I’d love to see your thoughts on the rest of it. Only if you want to though. Have a sub. :)
@PresidentOfTheNewLunarRepublic This reminds me of something that I noticed about both Sparky and Flurry Heart. If they are proven to be that unpredictable and powerful, why are they allowed in places where they could be dangerous to themselves and others? They are just figuring out what they are and what they can do, but it would be better to find out the risks beforehand, or hoof. How would you approach these archetypes?
@@Eisenwald64 Hmmm…that’s an interesting question. I think if I was writing these characters in either generation, I would attempt to give them a subplot of learning how to control their powers. I would establish their unpredictable magic first and then have an episode where it’s established they need proper training. In Flurry Heart’s case, someone like Starswirl would be perfectly equipped to help her unlock the full extent of her powers, but also learn to pull back and keep it under control. In Sparky’s case, he appears to have a direct connection to Spike in some capacity, so having the Dragon Lord teach him how to master his transformation fire would go a long way towards making the payoff where he saves the day in “The Roots of All Evil” even stronger than it already was. If the dragons were introduced in say, Chapter 5, and we had this little subplot with Sparky training under Spike, and then Opaline shows up to take Lava and Jade at the end, then Sparky could be established as a key character even more so than he already was in the actual Chapter 6. To quote Luke Skywalker, “talent without training is nothing,” and I think this would work a ton for the little guy’s arc had Chapter 5 been eight episodes instead of just six.

As it stands, some aspects of those two raise questions about behavioral issues and the concept of a "loose cannon".

As person who saw pretty much all MLP content to one extent or other... God, gen 5 graphics terrify me
at least this game isnt microtransaction hell like the gameloft game. the only thing i can really give this game credit for. theyre both slop and its really sad this franchise never got its battle for bikini bottom type game.
I was worried it was gonna just be a palette swap of the original with a different location. Game is pretty meh but your video was very enjoyable so positves!
When I played through this game.... It was interesting.
My thoughts overall in a nutshell is that the game felt overall mixed for me. I didn't think everything outright was worse than the previous game, rather, for me it was a lot more give-and-take.
For things I liked better... The level design. It's still sorta simplistic, but it did introduce a lot more involved platforming than the previous game. AMBA had level design that really only suited the purpose of its fetchquests without any real interesting platforming challenges. So I can appreciate this new game more for that.
The length of the game felt more appropriate... If not a little TOO long. It did drag a bit near the end. It could've used 30 minutes less of gameplay after unlocking Misty. And while it was neat to see Maretime Bay again, it had no reason to be in the game's story, and it came off as needless padding, even if the gameplay in those sections in isolation was inoffensive.
I like the idea of playing multiple characters. Even if their gameplay is overall going to be similar, in concept the idea is cool just for the character fantasy kind of way, while in the previous game you just had the 1 character outside of minigames. But in execution, there was some obvious lack in foresight with character balance and such.
And speaking of that, I'll start now with some bad stuff. Character balance was very poorly thought out. The most glaring and obvious example is with Sunny. Every other character besides her can dash/run. But you'd THINK it'd be fine. She has access to rollerblades again in this game! BUT... The numbers don't make the option very appealing. Character dash/run speeds have a HIGHER top speed than Sunny's rollerblade top speed. The Rollerblade stats/values were inherited from AMBA, which is fine, but the new Dash/Run mechanic has numbers that are just better, and didn't compensate the Rollerblade numbers to match dashing at the very least. My game design brain would prefer to have seen this, where Rollerblades would have a higher top speed than running (maybe like 10-15% more), but it'd still keep it's slower acceleration as a trade-off to running. That way running can still be used and prefered for players that want instant top-speed, while rollerblades are more rewarding for players who can maintain there top speed, minimizing downtime in acceleration. Instead, we just have rollerblades that are worse than running in every way, which s a damn shame considering I'm still very proud of the rollerblade animation set I did for them in the previous game.
ANYWAY, next, some minor things. First, I hate that the game doesn't properly interpolate some things that are calculated through the game's tickrate instead of framerate. AMBA's movement was entirely ran on tickrate (FixedUpdate), but was properly interpolated throughout, so it felt smooth and fine at any actual framerate. But there are a lot things that just suddenly don't interpolate now in this game that they didn't care to fix... For example, for player movement, your character rotation doesn't update every frame properly. Especially noticeable on slopes. And obviously, worst offenders are the minigames for similar reasons. Secondly, random visual things from the previous game no longer work.
Did you notice the character head rotation no longer rotates to your input direction? Instead their heads just face dead forward, making movement feel more stiff, even if the actual movement control physics are mostly unchanged. Animation did a lot of things to make movement feel good, and missing that made it feel worse. And thirdly, there's that double jump thing. Been looking into why that happens (though the example you showed at 12:17 is not a double jump. This is an intended mechanic often referred to as "Coyote jumping", where games will give you some leniency on being able to jump after running off the ground). Modding Unity games are pretty easy, so after looking at the Assembly, they changed how a specific check works when checking for grounded states. In AMBA there was a specific minimum upwards velocity you had to reach in order to land again, but in this game, they removed it, and replaced it with an insufficiently low timer. So you often enter grounded state again as you rise, allowing for a double jump.
Like I mentioned, Unity games are very easy to mod, and I've been doing that with this game for the past few days to fix some of the mechanical issues with the game. Already made good progress, fixed character rotation on interpolating, restored head rotation based on player input (the code was still there in the game for this to work, it just wasn't linked in properly), fixed the Double Jump bug (and also fixed an animation issue that kept the idle grounded animation while rising from a jump), buffed stats for Roller blades were given to be more appropriate given it's meant to function alongside characters that can run/dash (Max Speed 7 -> 9.5, Acceleration 5 -> 6). Among many other changes so far, but one I want to cover is the use of ReShade to restore the ACES aesthetic of the first game. You mentioned in your review about the colors being too saturated. Aaaand this is the reason why, they didn't use a proper tonemapper this time, unlike the previous game. While I haven't been able to restore ACES in-game directly, using external tools like ReShade has gotten it close enough for now too, which I plan to have packed in with my mod if I do end up releasing it. And there are still many more things I want to address and fix but I don't want to go on for too long.
A lot of the issues with this game again are symptomatic of rushed development, but also a team that was potentially not familiar with how a lot of things from the original game worked. This is a new dev team after all, and they had to inherit a lot of code from the previous game that they had no part of making originally. So unless they had some talented reverse engineering Unity devs, there probably wasn't enough time to really be TOO concerned about making sure everything from the previous game at least functioned on par with what's in the new game, and I can sympathize that. As I talked about before in my previous comment in your AMBA video, making these types of games are HARD given deadlines and small resources you have access too.
SO yeah, this whole thing is strange. Some things I liked, but many things in this game are also just more scuffed and jank. I don't think the particle issues you show in your own gameplay is the game's fault, that to me is a sign of outdated GPU drivers perhaps? But other than that, yeah, this game is still very rough all around. I do see more potential for fun in this one though, but it does miss the mark due to being rushed as mentioned before. BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS, I guess.

EDIT: Oh, wanted to mention the story too. The story makes no sense in this game, less sense than the previous. BUT... Even if it makes no sense, I appreciate that it didn't offend me like the previous game. Even if I don't really appreciate Sparky's existence.
As a programmer, I would love to learn all about the technical details (a video perhaps?), and I would look forward to the mod if you release it
Now if you could do the same for Yooka-Laylee, because people complain about that game's flaws, but they're either too lazy or not interested enough to mod the game to fix its flaws. There's only two mods for that game, and only one of them is completed: The Banjo-Kazooie voice mod (canceled and unavailable to the public) and Yooka-Laylee VR (available to the public).

Edit: I just rewatched the video for the first game and seeing just how nice the animations and cutscenes look compared to this one.

damn.. didn't know it had this many issues, the instructions for consone on pc did it for me, burst out laughing when i saw that! a shame G5 has to deal with this game's laziness, quite a drop from the last game.

That’s odd everything worked fine for me on Xbox the only problem I had was the flight school mini games where the rings matched the sky making it very difficult to see them

this was a fun review! these line of g5 games remind me of the mobile Equestria Girls game that got closed for being so bad. it was a very similar style, and it makes me kinda sad that mlp's recent track record of games, even since g4, doesnt hold much hope for mlp games in the future (besides the current mobile one, that one is pretty good). anyway, i think g5 has so much lost potential because on god i love the characters and story of g5. the only thing saving it rn is the 2d series (which is actually getting better since season 2) and the comics (these are really good). the toys are quite mid for this gen and are pretty much just copy pastes. i really hoped better for g5. i hope they can bring it back at some point.

I played it on switch, i never had any of these issues my only complaint was the loading screens taking forever.

Could you Imagine if My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic was a Mid-90s cartoon and there was a series High Quality Action-Platformer Games made by talented game studio to Rival Super Mario, Banjo Kazooie, and Kirby For the PS1/N64 Era and then in the future there would other Video Games and Cartoons that would Rival MLP's success in the PS2 Era onwards and they would've made very successful Franchises.

Well there's still another My Little Pony console game releasing in a few months (either August or September, earlier or not), but hopefully that one will be way different like improved/better and I have high hopes for that game but I'll have to see it for myself

The only real upsides i see to this game is the increased customization for those who care & a bit more importantly imo, being able to play as more than 1 of the main characters.

It doesn't justify it; it just shows how much of a cash grab these games are to Hasbro and Outright games. Hopefully, they will change their minds on how they view My Little Pony and create a game worth the $40 price tag.
These smaller game studios work their flanks off; the problems come from the money-hungry corporations who think people will buy anything with the MLP name on it 😞

Oddly enough I didn't get any glitches during my playthrough (pc) so not sure what was up with that on your version. I like to treat this game as an ideal podcast game. A game to play with the audio almost completely down while listening to a podcast. It's story isn't too deep so you can skip your way through cut scenes without losing too much context. There is a lot to do (and even more if you want to get all the achievements. Could it have been something better ? Yes . But where there is no guaranteed profit to be made , there won't be an investment. And my little pony is still (and has always been) a toy selling franchise with everything else attached to its name being shoved to the side. This game makes perfect sense from the pov of the current mainstream gaming industry.
Also I wouldn't call it the worst mlp game. Its perfectly mediocre and there have been worst interactive outings for the franchise.
I hope you get your 80 dollars back, this is miserable 😭

Not everything about G5 is terrible though.
-The movie was good.
-Make Your Mark had flaws but was fine overall after the first chapter.
-Tell Your Tale had its ups and downs during the first season, especially with the occasional gross-out humor, but also had plenty of bright spots to make it at least ok. Also, Season 2 has slowly been improving most of the issues from the first by featuring some actual character growth, more engaging storylines, and (currently) no gross-out humor.
Just because G5 had a couple of meh console games doesn't make the generation terrible overall. No offense, but your words are an example of why most G5 haters suck and the G4 fandom has become more toxic than it already was.

You mean apart from how all the different types of magic that affect the weather, plants, abilities etc. somehow disappeared???

Also where exactly would it have to go, when there are so many different kinds and all of them so powerful?
They would never have made it, as so much of life in Equestria and beyond is completely dependent on it they would not survive at all.
As there would be no weather, which would mean no food, which would mean that they would all starve to death that and how would they cope with no day night cycle?
Another thought is where exactly did their other cutie mark go and they also appear in a burst of magic and with it all gone as the movie said how would they appear at all and doesn't make sense that there would only be one as it lacks uniformity of design.
It was also so painfully clear that they were trying so hard to as the saying goes to "get down with the kids" with the inclusion of emojis, TVs and smart phones.
How exactly would they be invented in the first place with literally no reference and they have HOOVES - how are they supposed to create something that requires the dexterity that only hands provide, which they would also need to pick up something so thin and to even be able to use it without totally smashing it or cracking the screen??
That and inserting a real world human reference with a movie that is clearly based on the terminator?
That and now the three main types of ponies now don't like or trust each other despite Twilight's book on friendship, her school of friendship and the many generations of graduates that would spread the lessons far and wide.
The "art style" in that movie was off putting with their clearly human teeth, the unnecessary emphasis on the hooves which is also quite ugly, the wings that look like they were tacked on as an after thought with how far away they were from the body and they were comprised of down feathers.
Down feathers are only ever for warmth, they are not flight feathers so they would never get any lift.
Also there is no way that sunny would ever become an Alicorn as she is an Earth Pony, her destiny would never have anything to do with magic or any concept where it would make sense that she would become an Alicorn and it is just an insult that it is now just some flashy power up that she can just turn on and off instead of what makes sense that it is a type of Pony.
Telling the honest truth doesn't make someone toxic just because you don't like what you are hearing and seeing.
Also it was G4 that made MLP popular with all the previous generations fans of of MLP and created so many more with its deep and relatable story telling, its wholesomeness, art style, songs, character growth and never needed to "get down with the kids" or push popular established characters into it to try to sell it.
It is also the reason that Pony Cons even started and grew and made it known to even non fans.
One last thing - even the official site has changed its banner back to G4 and hasn't uploaded tyt as of today you can even see it for yourself. 😊😊

As you often see it when someone doesn't actually have an argument, they will not read what you have written, over step what you have said and just go to name calling and accusations based on pure emotion not observable fact, as you have clearly done.
I see that they have separated the generations with their own channels and tyt is live streaming rn.
I see that with its whole 9 viewers, as of writing this and also it is only at 70k+ subscribers not closing in on 100k like you said, whereas the official MLP channel is sitting at - 5.32 million subscribers.
That and the best of MLP FIM can often have 100+ viewers at a time.
Its fine to like g5 but it isn't likely that it will touch G4's popularity, g5 has been around for 3 years this September 24 and it isn't as popular because of the drop in quality compared to G4.
Its the hardcore fans that will notice the massive flaws and jarring differences and be totally honest about it and I don't see those that didn't watch FIM first really latching onto g5 like fans have and continue to with FIM.

You are not wrong, its nice to find someone with a sense of taste that is willing tbh, as it is everything about G4 that made MLP not only popular but made it soar.
You say that as if G4 was flawless and all of its fans are smart and sane, neither of which are even close to being true. In fact, you make it seem like G4 fans are actually a bunch of bullies who believe they're better than other types of MLP fans and think it's right to treat them like dirt.
It's almost like huge companies like Hasbro force the developers to rush a game and do the bare minimum to get money fast.
