hey bill i clicked on the link and then the template link but i couldn't find out how to actually get the templates
Why not use a small metal pin? Cut it just a little larger than the foam sides and take a hammer carefully flatten out the ends. A softer metal won't need to be hit hard so you could focus on accurately hitting the pin
Cut the pin ~ 22 mm and flatten out the ends and insert from the inside carefully peen out the outside
Hey bill. Did you happen to try binding rods for your hinge points?
Mjolnir could really use that paint.
"what could possibly go wrong?"

famous last words.
Lol, "what could possibly go wrong."
Me: Everything :)
in all the years I've been watching Bill and Brit I never knew there was a thinner for Barge.
the more you know.
It's commercial name is called "Methyl Ethyl Ketone" which is a powerful solvent you can find for a 1/3rd the price in the auto body section of your local large retailer that sells shit like that. Careful with it though, cause it's super bad for your lungs.
I used the color shift paint on my GoT dragon egg based on your template. Worked pretty well. Should be done in time for the next episode!
The color shift paint is exactly what I need for the Halo needler I'm building 👍👍👍 thanks
Awesome! Got a link somewhere to see it?
@@PlanetAlexanderProjects in the sanding and Bondo phase .... But it's getting there imgur.com/gallery/PvsL6v6
@@alexbabuca Looks amazing! I'm making a Combat Evolved Marine cosplay so I'm kinda in a Halo-obsessive mood right now. Are you adding electronics?
@@PlanetAlexanderProjects you can find the model on thingiverse, not my doing some other amazing person. And yes I plan to add pink and blue LEDs, and plan to get a little sound board with Arduino to control lights & sound. The Arduino and sound aren't in the original project so those I have to do myself.
Figured I'd throw the update here that it's finished, Finished Needler. imgur.com/gallery/OsYZWSP
Please do more how to train your Dragon projects
Or, similarly, Tales of Arcadia
Yes!!
Thanks for pronouncing Mod Podge correctly. Everyone calls it Modge Podge or Hodge Podge.
This is the most important comment on CZcams
I love how you think out loud!! It is so nice to have explanation before you start working on your project as well as during for simple tips and tricks!
It's all about the process!
My fav part
Music... (sees paint) music stop... “oooh”
Wonderful video. I have been inspired to try a mask my self. Very happy to see sponsors are reaching out to you and sending products for testing
Thank you so much for the tutorial and the free pattern. They'll come in handy when I make the full set of Astrid's armor.
I love how this came out! Absolutely fantastic. And I am going to have to try that color shift paint!
This is so cool! I love the color shift paints. My favorite is Aqua Flash. It is so gorgeous on black material.
I subscribed to you a few days ago. You just so happened to create the part of the cosplay that I'm struggling the most with. Thank you SO much for this!!
Fantastic timing! So glad we could help!
This turned out AMAZING! I love the paint too! sooo pretty.
Wow, looks great. So many details. The color shift paint is special!
Greetings again Bill and Britt, like always I love to see your work over at Punished Props!!!
When Bill was using the color shift paint...and the music stopped. OMG lol Each of your videos has a touch that makes me giggle.
Hah! That's awesome to hear. We aim to educate and entertain!
Those paints would work great as a shortcut for heat-discolouring 'metal' in models and props. Nice.
Oh yeah that would be an interesting application for them! They're a little shimmery but if applied right that could be a cool effect.
@@punishedprops I used to use a lot of 'dollar store' micah-heavy eye shadow and rub-n-buff on my spaceships and kitbashes. But I'm old. I did a pretty cool 'battlestar galactica' version of the 1:27 Ertl Millennium Falcon. House fire took all my stuff or I'd post some good pics.
The design is totally gorgeous ...I love yours more than the actually design!
Finally something about my favourite series, how to train your dragon for the win! Best series!
Also I can't help but marvel at how organic this promotion is! Like, not only do new people get to know the products, but also all of us who aren't decided on a sealant for the next project and already love Mod Podge, can easily be swayed. Natural, unobtrusive, even helpful marketing. Congrats to both plaid and PPA
Thanks so much for the feedback, that's really great to hear!
Making a deathclaw hide. The way you did the scales is actually similar to what i was thinking. Glad i found this video.
That's awesome!
Ah yes! Been binging your channel since yesterday and that was perfect timing!
Thank you thank you thank you for always having your templates available and free to use!! ❤️👌
You're very welcome!
I used the color shift paints on the hilt of my master sword! They mix really will with isopropyl alcohol to run through the airbrush, but need a few coats to get more than a subtle sheen.
Oh what a great idea!
The Sunshot from Destiny 2 would be a GREAT application for the color-shift paints. I need to keep them in mind for if I decide to give it a try myself too.
Oh yeah absolutely!
I hope if I ever use color shift paint I get sexy background music
You seem to use a brush when adding weathering, to speed things along you could use a spray bottle (maybe one with an end to change from mist to squirt) I used a barbers spray bottle, it helps to do a large area quickly, the squirt helps to add splash patterns (up boots and things)
Really enjoying the longer videos
I made a "holographic" mask for a costume and used color shift paint to give it that cool finish!
Awesome!
Have any pics of it? I'd love to see!
Sanding the propmaker ASMR. This is awesome. I think i'm going to try and make two for my boys
Fantastic!
I'm too poor for a bandsaw, but the last time I was in Michael's I found a small angle cutter. It has a 90degree and a 45 degree angle on it. Changed my life. No more wobbly cuts. :D
I've never worked with foam but ... you can get tube eyelets that are long enough to fit through 10mm foam to act as a bushing to take a hinge pin... You'd probably have to glue them in place so as not to compress/distort the foam.
Love watching EVA foam work. I may have to make something out of EVA for my channel. Great work, keep on inspiring makers and creators.
Thank YOU for watching!
You guys make the best stuff! There's one helmet I'd like to see you make. It's a bit on the simple side but after watching you do screen tints on plastic I this this one would be a great build: The Cobra Commander Helmet. Not from the movie, from the cartoon show. He was a true villain from the 80's and I always imagined that helmet to be quite stunning with a tinted and mirrored face shield, with the rest a shiny metallic blue. That said, great episode!
You can use a big old metal soup ladle as a stake to shape foam on. Just scratch up the inside and epoxy it to a wooden stand. Really easy and it speeds up pre-shaping big batches.
That reminds me a bit of the Kamen Rider Black RX helmet, especially with the back plates. I might give that a try using some of the techniques you used for this one.
i just stumbled onto your youtube show and it is really awesome to see. and it even sparkt an old flame back in to me. fore a game that i loved but unfortunately died. blacklight:retribution my favorite game of all time, but i digress, i was thinking of making the nine lives helmet from that game. and making some of the armor as well. thanks so much for the spark. perhaps this gives you an idea of what to make next, and if so can't wait to see
Fantastic! Welcome to the channel, we're super stoked to have you!
You look great in Plaid, Bill! ;-) Excellent job of course. Love the bloopers at the end but only 3? Really? Hehe
I used the color shift paint for my Destiny titan sentinel shield and on my doomfang pauldrons. Good stuff.
Right on!
The colour shift paint looks perfect for original robocop costume paint job
Cool to see another Astrid helmet tutorial!!!
We did one but in spanish with also free templates but we didnt use those iridiscent paints and we think that they are very cool! ❤
That's awesome! These paints really helped get that shimmery dragon scale look.
@@punishedprops totally agree!
Wow, this is awesome. You got yourselves a new subscriber.
Another awesome and helpful video Bill. I've noticed you've been using your bandsaw a lot more lately to cut foam and I've recently been playing around with using my scroll saw more with a high tooth count blade. Especially to get pieces with a bevel cut to match up better. There any pros/cons you can see to using the band saw vs scroll saw?
I just made my first thing out of foam. It’s not nearly as polished as your guys’ work but I sure learned a lot in the process. Thanks for all the help, tips, and tricks!
That's so fantastic to hear! Congrats! Onto the next build!
awesom video as allways bill!!, and I think that for any "visor kind" of part of a helmet you can use chicago screws as an alternative :)
I use those to add Iridescence to the carapaces of Tyranid models from Warhammer 40k good stuff.
Another amazing video, guys! Thank you!
You should tried the crushed up aluminium foil and iron on the foam for a faux leather look for the bottom portion of your mask.
Thanks a lot from Russia Punished Props, i learn a lot from you!
Thank you for making this helmet 😄.
I'm a big fan of the movies 😁
I'm for sure using those color shift paints on my Hylian Shield. Will work perfect for the metallic blue paint and the triforce, and will look sweet next to the red bird if it's a matte red I think.
Great ideas!! Make sure you apply a good solid base coat before using the color shift paints, as they are pretty transparent.
Me gusta el trabajo que hacen.
Me gustaría aprender esas técnica para hacer trajes, cascos etc...
Adoro este canal 😍❤
When he was talking about the modge podge he said he had two 'flavors'.
Flavors???
Lmao my family says this about different products all the time
I prefer the camel flavor but I thick Bill is a fan of vanilla ^^
Angel Allard wait... are you not supposed to eat it?
Blood of virgins is my favorite
You could have used some larger rare earth magnets in the pivoting areas. They will sit flush in the foam, they still rotate, and makes it easier to disassemble for transportation to cons and such
thankyou so much for making this video..
You're so welcome! :)
I need to use these color shift paints for my Captain Marvel project! I’ve been painting the modern red and blue suit but it’d be cool to go to the retro Kree colors
That would be epic!
This tutorial is amazing!! Will be a great help for making my Astrid helmet. Thanks!! ^-^
You're so very welcome!
Amazing job mate .
Quick tip I leaned long ago, when using contact cement, cover the areas on one piece, with the backing paper from a sheet of letraset or equivalent, the kind of paper that doesn't adhere. then as you lay one side onto the other, you pull away the sheet. We used this technique countless times when adhering rubber gaskets around awkward shapes. As you say, once they touch, they stick and the whole thing has to come apart (not easy) and you have to start again... Hope at least some of you find this useful. I hear non stick baking parchment works well too, though I have not tested that, so don't take my word for it
Great tip!
This is phenomenal!! I don’t know if it would be too much similar content, but I’d love to see Hiccup’s helmet from the same movie! Matching set, after all ;)
Thanks very much! We don't currently have plans for that build, but you could totally make Hiccup's helmet by modifying the Astrid template!
Punished Props Academy ah, you’re right! They would be similar enough builds, that would definitely work if I could find the right references. On a side note, thank you for explaining things very clearly in your videos! I’ve never tried anything like this before and I’m excited to try once I get my hands on the right materials!
Nice work!!!
for all the scale cutting out, Bend a copper pipe into a weird scale shape, sharpen, and punch out a bunch, bang bang bang! itll cut right through that thin foam
Great idea!
I know the Tesseract glows so it may seem stupid but I feel like the color shift would be cool on that if you didn’t want to do any wiring
that pallette.... GENIUS
Pretty cool huh?
Thanks for the tutorial and template. I'm using it as a base for a different helmet.
Only problem I ran into was that despite printing as instructed I still had a sort of margin that cut edge pieces off. I guess that's on my printer. Fortunately what I plan to do this isn't a serious problem.
But I also had two extra pieces for the rear dome page 2 of 6 (not neck guards). Did I miss what that was for?
Edit: yeah I did miss something. When the instructions said that some parts would be broken up I didn't think it meant literally. Still fortunately it was the back dome and the difference isn't too big, and luckily I figured it out before cutting into the front visor.
You could use the color shift paints for your dragon egg. kinda for a prismatic dragon egg.
I think someone has tried that! It would certainly have a great look.
honestly, when i do projects like helmets with visors i use brads. cut a slit in the top piece and a small hole in the bottom. super easy
If there's a color shift paint that goes from purple to pink or purple to blue you could use it on the knife blade from a while ago. It'd add to the mystery metal look it had.
Oh yeah totally!
i was looking at these color shift paints for Alexstrasza and Ysera from WoW!
They'd be great for that!
This looks so fun
Where have u been this was my first time watching u and I'm already subscribed
Bill thank you for all the free patterns you give us! Any chance we might get a video about making those patterns so we can do it ourselves?
Last video making a mask he went through the pattern making process!
Ok I haven't seen it on CZcams yet but you asked for ideas the blunder gat from Black ops 4 zombies there are three and you do awesome gun props
This is awesome. Now I want to see how to make the rest of the costume :)
Thanks very much!
Love the bill bill is there a way to scale the pattern so I can make this for my daughter she is absolutely bonkers for how to train your dragon
Could you made an other How to train your dragon 3 helmet?
Would please make Rwby Yang xaio long's volume 5 robotic/prosthetic arm?
A lot of people are saying magnets for pivots, while yes that will work, you could also use vinyl tubing, I won't go into extensive detail, but check out lost wax, that's the way he does his, and it's very cool
That's also a great suggestion!
Looks great. And immediately made me think of The Redsmith's Leather Hiccup helmet.
Even though I do some leatherwork. Think I'd go with foam if I were to make one.
They're both great material choices!
@@punishedprops The biggest difference is one costs ~$20 for a large sheet, the other ~$200 for a side.
Great work. Can you pls do the rest of the cosplay! Your vid are the best.
Lost wax has a pivot that he makes with a ink pen shaft, and I think it would work perfectly on this helmet to create a hinge so that you could open and close the helmet. and you could hide the rivet under a scale or a cap.
Very cool!
Cool project Bill! You´re getting pretty good at this aren´t you? :-D
Damn that’s some high quality foam
Never clicked on a video so fast in my life 😍
See where on the top back of mask sort of goes back farther than head. Think would be fun to make it go farther ending in point. So have vertical spike and rear spike.
You should make stormbreaker especially since you've had so much experience with axes
....or the infinity gauntlet
Both very cool designs!
Looks great
Thank you very much!
Hey, im new to the channel. I have to say, im impressed! You did an amazing job on that helmet. Ive seen a couple other videos of yours and you've done amazing. Heres a suggestion: Van Helsing cosplay. Like.. all the characters and stuff. Plus a werewolf definetly!
Hey welcome aboard! Thanks so much for checking out our content :)
I use Mod Podge for pretty much everything, I'm afraid to use something else! Tip: If you want a smooth finish, take some 800 grit wet and dry sandpaper and wet it, then sand the heck out of the Mod Podge. It gives it a really smooth finish.
Great video, Awesome Helmet!!
Can you make also hiccup's helm and armor please🙏
Wow, I need to get back to some foam projects!
Do it!
I am wondering if there were plenty of solutions replied in response to the hinge part question of the helmet. My first thought was the use of round neodym magnets hot-glued into sinks in pairs on both sides, plus a weaker pair on on the top to temporarily keep the visor open. The magnets should have no problem while hinge'ing and should not fall apart. Wondering if magnets ever been used within props. I am totally fascinated by watching these videos, but never did anything like that. Keep up the great channel!
Color shift might be great (airbrushed) for that burned metal effect on gun barrels and hot things.
That would be cool to try!
Thank you! I love her!
This is so cool I wish you guys had more subs.
Thanks for your support!

A PLAGUE TALE INNOCENCE Gameplay Walkthrough Part 1 make that helmet in the thumbnail! it looks amazing!
I like it when you talk about your caulk
To straighten my edges, I use the disc sander on my belt sander.
That's a great tool for that!
