    Ok here is my "emotional" and "instructive" response ;)
    You got it backwards. Most wars weren't about religion but religion didn't help much to prevent them either! So what are religions good for if we kill more people then ever even AFTER the lord has revealed himself to us (as you claim it has happened)?
    After thousands of years for religions doing “it’s work" we ended up with the biggest wars EVER in history learning that we got far to good in killing that we can afford another chapter of that. Talking about nukes, chemo-, and bio-weapons. THAT'S when we figured out we need something new, something else and something better and THEREFORE we installed the UN amongst other things.
    And you can say what you want but this brought us the biggest period of peace EVER in history!
    It was all that! Not religion.
    Next thing. Please don't just say "there would be no good and evil without religion". That's your opinion but the smartest people on the planet can't find a definite position on this and the way you say it makes it sound like it’s a fact when it's really not. You want us to think about it. Fair. I did. So in return please think about his. If it is true and without religion and you mean Christianity ofc there would be no good and evil (and keep wording in that way to avoid morals because this way everybody knows what is meant) this means before the old testament we would be total savages, totally lost with no clue whatsoever what good is and what evil is. Everything we learned about history and culture tells us this isn't true.
    In fact I would even go so far to say that the vast majority of people (not the exception of the rule meaning sociopaths etc.) exactly know that is wrong to kill and hurt someone. Even to such an extent that learning of the bible later in life only takes it a few notches further because the concept already meant sense before. What I mean by that is that the bible isn't bringing anything alien and new to us it's only taking it one yard further and basing it on what everybody already felt and knew.
    However saying without bible there would be NO CONCEPT whatsoever about good and evil you would see this huuuuge change of behavior in people and cultures before they knew about the bible and after. Not the case. People cry about the same things for thousands of years. We know what feels good and what doesn't and it's even proven that given a choice (and living in an environment where you are provided with everything you need - shelter and food) people tend to be nice to others. The ones not will be singled out by the group and punished in one way or another.
    If there would be no concept at all without the bible we would sooo many totally different behavior patterns throughout the whole world but in fact we didn't and we don't.
    Yes we live in a culture defined by Judaism and Christianity (in the west) but that alone didn't lead us to peace and happiness. Not. at. all. So once again I see. Religion had it's turn for 2 to 3 thousand years already. We ended up with countless denominations and with no religion holding a clear majority so sorry. There is this argument that we don’t even know what we are talking about because everything is based on that culture now but I beg to differ. Telling people what to do by telling them about heaven as reward or hell if they don’t obey clearly isn’t working any better than the death penalty in the US and throughout history. Following doctrine without understanding is really not worth anything. The moral concept of the Abrahamic religion isn’t new.
    Treat others as you would like others to treat you is basically all we need and it was already there in the Code of Hammurabi 300 years before the old testament.
    It’s time for education and rationality now. Combine that with a healthy dose of awareness and compassion and let’s see what happens. We watched religion for thousands of years…time to take a step forwards not backwards. Take it as a basis, sure but never again exclusively.
    The world just can’t afford another period of “my religion is better than yours”. Those claims backed up by ancient books that define “truth” for all eternity paralyses society. Especially since all of those books are written in a way that we just CAN’T follow it literally because we would stone people for cursing, believing in other gods, lying with a virgin promised to another man and so on.
    But ofc, you say, we can’t take that literally. Yeah and that’s the problem. If the “word of god” can’t be taken literally and it’s cherry picking and years of studying history, texts and languages and just doesn’t qualify as blueprint for our daily modern life.
    You even said once to me “God didn’t want the bible to be just that”…meaning otherwise it would be way more of a manual and precise asf. But it isn’t. Which, following this logic tells us it’s meant to be something else and it was never intended to guide is 2000 years later.
    So how about modern methods?
    How about asking all people of the world what they wish for life and how to be treated then taking the cross sum of that and make it the law? How can be following an ancient text be more right then actually following the combined wishes of all mankind? One is claiming to hold the truth the other is actually a mirror of reality. Possible through technology and being now connected with the whole world. How about put more faith on connecting and accepting that doctrines like “I have the truth and the way to the truth only runs through Jesus Christ” isn’t connecting people but separating.
    The world has had enough of absolute statements. I’m just not willing to bet on Christianity, Islam, Judaism or even Hinduism anymore. Let’s keep religion out of it and put our faith in humanism instead. Seems to be way more efficient and productive to just talk about behavior directly and to the point without having to get your personal God and what that means out of the way first.

      @@sarakaster And I would also add, if you are an atheist and of the beleif that religion is simply as a blanket statement 'bad' then the logical conclusion is religion is completely man made, so by this statement it would also encompass that religion is a reflection of humanity and by itself then a natural inevitable expression of human nature.

    • @sarakaster
      @sarakaster Před 4 lety +11

      @@PHTV11 If religion is man made it is a reflection of humantiy and therefore not bad. It, as you said encompasses everything of the culture of that certain time with some extra wisdom. There is a lot in there everyone can benefit from and a lot of redundant outdated stuff. • @idkidk2459
      @idkidk2459 Před 4 lety +8

      Notice how Vin frequently refers to the wars of the last century to make his point. It's convenient because with modernity comes less religious and religious fundamentalism so naturally there are less religious wars. Even in WW2, though, religion played an integral part; Nazi Germany was one of the most religious states on the planet if not all of history. Religion and theology was pushed much harder in Nazi Germany than in any other state I've ever known. We also have to remember that the largest wars are often sorted by number of deaths and when religions were ubiquitous, population was far lower. The Thirty Years War, for example, was an extremely brutal religious war in the 1600s that took the lives of 8 million people (~12% of Europe's entire population) in just one region but we never hear about those. When there is war, religion is usually involved either explicitly or implicitly.
      The "Judeo-Christian foundation" narrative that Christians often push is very exaggerated. The only reason why they weren't/aren't stoning kids to death and the like is because they applied a bit of reason to their interpretation. They could have used any old "scripture" and we would have a similar history. Everyone grew up reading the same book and applied their own rationality by denoting the obviously heinous portions as mysterious metaphors and ignoring it, every theist applies similar interpretation techniques except for terrorists are the like. It is probably more accurate to cite Greco-Roman roots as this is more encompassing and not just limited to what many people happened to be told by priests. Many of the most important aspects of the West - language, politics, philosophy, economics, etc - have largely secular roots; we cannot ignore the Hellenistic and Neoplatonism periods (amongst others) which had a major influence on the West and even Christianity. There was nothing original about Christianity -- it just stole secular and religious values and philosophies from people and called it it's own, as they did with material wealth as well.

      Sarkast, war is about 1 thing and only 1 thing, Power. The instigator of war is the evil one. Where the countenance in defence is backed by God. Because in defence, there is righteousness, in dominion there is not. Satan uses men against each other to control this realm.

We are obviously not masters of our destiny, but each individual owns their own destiny, no mater how their life turns out. "Be your own god" is another way of saying "You make your bed and you sleep in it." Or if you have to involve god it would be "God helps those who help themselves."

    Don't know how I never came across this before. I love this song, it is my favorite song of all time. Entombed is my favorite band. You guys are wonderful and amazing. A true Godsend. This album is the best "Death Metal album ever. Bar none." That was the review by Kerrang at the time, and being part Swedish, I wholeheartedly agree. Thank you for the examination of the song and it's lyrics. You need to listen to the entire album and some of their other gems. It's funny you mentioned a 16 YO kid in your review. I was 16 when this album came out. I was ready to kill myself because I was so empty and alone, but God in his mysterious ways, despite the satanic and anti-christian nature of these guys lyrics, reached into my heart and soul through this song. He used the haunting beauty and power of this song to draw me into His arms when I cried out to Him to save me and take my life as His own, if He was real. He absolutely is, and He absolutely did. Unfortunately, I have not been honoring Him with my life for most of the time since then. Hearing your reaction and in-depth examination, has brought me to a new level of appreciation and realization for what He has done for me, and how pathetically evil and horrid my response has been. I pray that He will transform all his children by the renewing of our minds, and that He will infinitely bless you 2 for what you are doing! Praise God the Father, son, and Holy Ghost and bless His Holy name! I hope 2 someday have a conversation with you 2. Until then much love in Christ, and may we find fellowship in His sufferings and the blood He shed for us on the cross. Greater is He that is in me, than he who is in the world.

    Always loved the sound of Swedish death metal bands, from straight up death metal to prog to melodeath. Entrombed were a great one for sure.
    I hope you get to listen to Edge of Sanity someday, one of my personal favourites, Dan Swano is a genius. Or Dark Tranquillity, who got me started into "real metal", even if I don't listen to much melodeath anymore. Heck, you haven't even listened to the "good" In Flames yet.

    HOOOOOLY FUCK! I've been repeatedly recommending this song in comments since the early days of your channel and now this is a big day for me to see this. I'm glad you're kinda digging this stuff, this whole album was like a big slap to American Death Metal taking over the scene back then. After this you should INSTANTLY go for some DISMEMBER, the band from the same era with a very similar debut album. Pick Override of the Overture, Dismembered, Of Fire or Under a Bloodred Sky. All these songs are phenomenal.

      "this whole album was like a big slap to American Death Metal taking over the scene back then"
      Odd way to frame it. American death metal didn't really "take over" the scene, for the main reason that death metal *started* in the US and thus, most significant releases in the genre came from the US.

    "Left Hand Path" and "Clandestine" (their first couple releases) are not only Swedish Death Metal classics, but Death Metal classics overall. Instant go-to if you need to release a little aggression. After that they started going downhill in my opinion. Lyrically, you may be interested in "Sinners Bleed" off "Clandestine", which could almost be a Christian song. It's about the horrors of a guy descending into Hell.

    One of the most influential songs and albums I ever heard.
    When this came out I saw Entombed at a few gigs and it was so clear that what fans was drawn to and had in common, apart from metal, was a very deep and strong hate of christianity.
    Music is fortunately open to interpretation, but you with your background etc will probably never fathom how strong that hate is.
    "If there is no god there is no way to say what's good or evil", that's the typical Christian way to try to set the rules and part of what's so rotten in religion.
    Atheists have no problem what so ever to know the difference.

    one of the most influential death metal albums ever, and one of my favorites. this album cover, especially, is very beautiful, imo. the "lLeft Hand Path" is less "Satanism" than just "otherism", where you're different than the normal shit, which is like Christianity, especially in the US. it's about something DIFFERENT, not especially something OPPOSITE. And, even symbolism aside, the imagery and the description is just so perfect.

  • @shanegray377
    @shanegray377 Před 3 lety +1

    The Whole Left Hand Path thing is more an ideological approach to religion/spirituality/philosophy.
    For example, a practitioner of Tantra could take the right hand or lefthand path in doing so (or forge a middle path as their nature dictates).
    The right hand is a quieter, slower, calmer and all round less hazardous path to take.
    The lefthand teaches all the same stuff, in a amped up, more severe kinda way.
    Fast or slow.
    Walk or run.
    Perhaps a slow jog. 😆
    A similar analog could be construed from Kabbalah.
    The Tree of Life is broken into 3 pillars: Mercy, Middle, Severity. They are all options for a "return" to the godhead.
    The Magicians path is through 10 sephiroth. Returning to the east, we could see the LH tantrics like Aghoris or more severe aescetics of any persuasion, following the Path of Severity which whilst being on the right side of the tree is analagous to the LHP, as much because the foundation of feminine energies is found in Binah on the P.O.S. and in vedic/tantric thinking the active energy of the godhead is on the Left Hand Side. Shakti is the Lefthand of God so to speak.
    Just some food for thought.
