    Thank you Mick and Trudie, you finally made it to Adana. The place I spent the first 4 yrs of my married life. Adana was nothing like this when we moved there from Germany in 1961. The population was then about 500.000. No houses around the Baraj. We used to swim there. We did live near the railway station. Ziya Pasa Boulevard was called Yeni Bulv. There used to be big villas in beautiful gardens on Yeni Bulv. No high-rise buildings.
    Once we took the Baghdad Express from Istanbul to Adana in a sleeper compartment. A steam locomotive pulled the train. The train line was built under Kaiser Wilhelm. There was a German cemetery high up in the Taurus mountains with graves of people who died during the building area.
    Oh my, the copper street is still operating. I have many copper pots and pans as decorations around my house in Australia. Some I gave to my children. My carpets and rugs from Adana are a bit worn after 60 yrs, but they still look good.
    There was only one park, the Ataturk Park in Adana and only the railway bridge and the old stone bridge to cross the Seyhan River. My husband drove everyday over the old stone bridge to work at Incirlik Air Base. Peddlers with push carts full of fresh vegetable and fruits came to the house everyday. I must say Adana looks much more beautiful and sophisticated today as 60 yrs ago.
    You do make wonderful documentaries about Turkey, Mick and Trudie. I wish we had that technology way back.

    • @mickandtrudie
      @mickandtrudie  Před 2 lety +4

    • @amaryllislady8795
      @amaryllislady8795 Před 2 lety +3

      @@JustME-pu5ud We had no children at that time. My children were born during the time we lived in Tripoli, Libya. After Turkey my husband was offered a job with the US Air Force in Libya. They had a huge Base there, much bigger than Incirlik. It was called Wheelus Air Base. Qaddafi closed it down in June 1970. My husband was then offered a job from the Libyan Military and we stayed there another 2 years.
      There was also a big difference. In Libya European spouses were allowed to work for the Americans. Which we were denied from the Turkish Government. So in Adana I did volunteer work for the American Red Cross. They had a house near Ataturk Blv. They offered some respite to GI and their families when in town, like free coffee or tea and cooking classes or square dance classes etc.
      In Libya we also had full privilege to use the Base like Americans, shopping at the commissary , free hospital, dentist etc. We could buy a car from an American who left Libya. In Turkey we had to fly back to Germany, buy a car there and drive it 3000 km to Adana and later take it out of the country again.
      In the sixtieth they had nothing in Adana. You could not even buy fly screens for the windows or an air conditioner. The climate in summer was horrendous and Mosquitoes were there in abundance.. At that time Turkey didn't import anything and there was hardly any manufacturing.
      Of course you could get basic food, like flour, sugar, oil etc. and plenty of fruits and vegetables of the best quality, but meat was already a problem. The butcher was in the souk. Half a bovine carcass or sheep hung outside their stores in the heat, black with flies and tough like an old leather boot. My husband caught a lot of fish with his speargun at Kizkalesi were we spent summer weekends. Today it's very different in Turkey than 60 yrs ago, probably it had changed much when you were there compared to my time.

    I can not find the words to express my feelings watching this video. Everything you did is perfect. Me and my husband still thinking about buying something and send some time there. We are living in the USA but Turkey is on our mind for the last two years. We postponed our decision due to pandemic time and restricted traveling. Hope next summer we will be able to travel and Turkey is our destination.
    Happy New Year and more videos like this one 💕
