- In the face of local and national nursing shortages, and more significant shortages in mental health care, the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division (BHD) Nurse Recruitment Campaign challenges candidates to apply only if they have what it takes to care for the most underserved populations. Joining us to discuss BHD and what it takes to work there are Administrator MIke Lappen and Nurse Jeff Munz. BHD is hosting a Nursing Job Fair on May 15 between 2pm and 5pm. If you have what it takes to be a mental health nurse, apply at Milwaukee.gov/nursing.

Step 1: have a mental break down
Step 2: have the mind of you’re patient
3:50 actually in nursing you have to address the physical problem before you address psychosocial ones .. Maslow’s Hierarchy
Yes sir. Maslow's Hierarchy of needs.
Sometimes a mental health problem may be the main cause of not fulfilling basic needs. For example, a person may not be eating due to anxiety. Other examples include self harming, lack of personal hygiene. Mental health issues may also interfere in a person’s ability to manage other health problems such as diabetes care.
You are correct that if a person is having trouble breathing or maybe having a diabetic crisis you would first treat that problem. But if that is not occurring, then the mental health issue should be prioritized due to its impact on physiological needs. Physical harm to self or others is of course priority to treat.
But yes Maslow’s Hierarchy is the basis of all of this!!
In real life the physical issue and the mental issue often happens at the same time. If you have a patient who is paranoid and won't wear an oxygen mask or nasal canula but has a O2 Sat of 88%, you definitley have to deal with the mental at the same time.
@@SonyaLCH oh yes that makes a lot of sense
@@hew15ify understood 👌🏾
Am studing to be a mental health nurse
I work in an Australian psych ward as an OT. I love it but I have learned that it is ESSENTIAL to REGULARLY self care. I can't just wing it anymore. I have to remind myself all the time that my wellbeing is a priority
Watching this 2021....missed the job
I clicked on this so fast
Same. I have a degree in Psychology as well as Criminal Justice but am looking & HAVE been looking for something MORE; something where I can actually make a difference in people's LIVES. Mental Health is something that affects EVERYONE. I have a BIG HEART.
What it takes to be a mental health nurse...then proceeds to interview people that are not mental health nurses.
