  • Welcome back to Nerd Theory, where Josh and I discuss the latest weekly news in Star Wars. Today, let's talk about Hayden Christensen sporting the Kenobi hat and getting the love he always deserved from Star Wars fans. It only took 20 years, sadly.
Hayden will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker and Darth Vader in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus.

I was at the convention where he just appeared. Got to meet him for a photo and ran into him behind the scenes, told him it was an honor and thanks for the awesome memories. My best friend was actually part of the voice over talent at the con and got to hang out with him in the green room for a few minutes. He told me Hayden was super cool and humble, and he just seemed like he appreciated the rest of the talent treating him like anyone else. The con-goers showed nothing but love to him though. 👍

Hayden was already quite a solid actor by the time he did Star Wars, and that is probably part of the reason he got the part. I just saw it as people upset about the way the character was written, and blaming it on the actor. The OT were definitely great films, but the prequels were great as well, just for different reasons. I never understood the amount of effort I've seen some people go through to say that we only found them good after the clone wars came out.

    I believe that Hayden portrayed Anakin perfectly, and here is my reasoning;
I suffer of many mental illnesses and some disabilities. They can be very catastrophic if it gets the better of me.
Filling me with so much Hate, sometimes very violent feelings, and the feeling of powerlessness can make that even worse.
I am very afraid of Loss, and it makes me very over-affectionate to the people I care about.
Having these traits in mind, The movies makes it clear that Anakin isn't very mentally healthy.
He's been a slave his whole life. He's never felt The Human love and compassion that most of us receive from others.
The Jedi were definitely not the best environment for Anakin's mental health.
Throughout the 2nd and 3rd movies in the prequel, I feel Empathy and relations. It shows that Anakin is a Lonely and scared child in a big galaxy, being surrounded by people who simply don't care to understand, and tell him to get over his issues as if its an easy task. So he holds onto what makes him feel happy most, to the point that fear drives him to desperation. And Hayden has portrayed that flawlessly.
Anakin is portrayed how he should be. Sadly, Destined to be Vader.

To me the prequel trilogy added so much more emotion and depth to the already amazing original trilogy, and Anakin’s tragic story made me feel so much sympathy for him. I spent the greater portion of my childhood watching Hayden and the other prequel actors and not even being aware of the hatred out there. Even today and even though I can sense what haters are talking about, my love for episodes 1, 2, and 3 will always remain. Anakin Skywalker was a symbol of hope for me growing up and still is today, and I could think of no other person on Earth that would even come close to Hayden Christiansen’s amazing portrayal. all the dialogue in these movies were written on purpose…he was a Slave he didn’t know how to act around people especially someone he had a crush on like padme. After this title, i was like, did something happen to MY HAYDEN?
thank god not, but yeah, he deserves ALL the love
    he was and is perfect
I'm old school, i grew up on the Orig Trig
and was DEEPLY worried about the prequels, and more hyped for them then i've ever been for any movie ever (the phantom menace specifically, I'll still say unironically, the trailer for the phantom menace is the greatest trailer in movie history).
But what i did in 2005, the MOMENT i finished watching Sith, was go home and pop in A New Hope
It was a great night. A truly magical night.
Watching Ewen give baby luke to uncle owen and going home and watching Sir Alec Guiness, and seeing the same kindness, the same warmth in his eyes.
I said to myself that night "It worked. Holy shit. It worked."
I wasn't sure it was going to. But i watched the whole trilogy that night.
I saw Anakin's hate and loss of Padme in Vader's rage
I the strange glances Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru gave each other, the way Obi Wan reacted when Luke said I want to be a Jedi, like my Father before me
The way Vader faught Luke on cloud city and held out his hand to Luke to join him, and have luke reject him the way Padme had, and to FEEL his crushed soul...
That second glance he gives to the stars at the end of empire from the bridge of the executer after the millenium falcon finally in one of the greatest moments in cinematic history FINALLY made the jump to light speed...
and then watching the lightning crackle off luke as pleaded "Father PLEASE"
and you know what i saw? Not Luke
    I saw Padme
Vader saw his wife in his son's eyes
And then the Jedi Returned. And his name was Anakin. And he saved the universe.
And he did it for his wife.
"Tell your sister. You were right. You were right about me."
"There's still good in him." -Padme Amidala
Her son was only repeating basically the only thing he'd ever heard her say....
Yeah masterpiece doesn't begin to describe my feelings for Star Wars
so instead i'll say "Thank You Hayden."
and to the rest of you
"May The Force Be With You."

As a female Star Wars fan who was a teenager when the prequels came out, I definitely was a hard core fan girl for Hayden. I definitely saw his other works in part of it and there was a theme of him playing that angry teenager character in consecutive roles (Higher Ground (tv show), Life as a House & Attack of the Clones). So it’s not so much that he was a “bad” actor, just that when he caught public attention, his roles were too similar and didn’t really show the full range of his abilities.
That being said, while I enjoyed the prequels I do cringe when I rewatch both the OT and prequel trilogies due to some of Lucas’ dialogue. I think there’s even been quote of Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford telling George that no one would say what he wrote or something to that effect.

Hayden Christensen is a very talented and underrated actor... Outside of Star Wars, his best performances are in Life as a House and Shattered Glass. Overall, his best performance is in Revenge of the Sith imo. He nailed the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Darth Vader... Giving us an amazing performance, both physically and emotionally. People that criticize his dialogue and portrayal of Anakin Skywalker don't understand how specific the character is written... How specific and deliberate the dialogue is written. They don't understand the cadence of James Earl Jones that Hayden brought to Anakin's voice. Hayden's best talent is his ability to show vast emotion via facial dialogue with little to no talking at all. We see many moments of this such as with the death of Anakin's mother, the struggles he has dealing with his visions of Padme dying later... His confrontation with Obi-Wan... The sadness, anger, and total distraught demeanor is all in his face. Hayden also does this incredibly well in Life as a House and Shattered Glass among other films...
I can't wait to see his performance in "Obi-Wan Kenobi"... I know he'll nail it again. People that are skeptical or critical of him really need to revisit his performances with everything above in mind. Also, the criticism of the prequels often came from media critics anyway... George knew that many wouldn't understand the story he was telling at this point and the way he was telling it... I love that more and more love is coming full circle with the Prequels as I've always loved and appreciated them so much.

I always loved Hayden Christensen’s portrayal as Anakin Skywalker! Internet wasn’t really around when the prequels came out and the kids who grew up at the time were too young to voice their opinions to the public. That’s why the toxic hate from the OT neckbeards gave the illusion that everyone hated the prequels. Notice the outpour of love from prequel generation now that we’re older.
I hate the thought that the toxicity towards the prequels, which have some of the best world-building in the history of cinema, killed George Lucas’ passion for film making and robbed us of more of his Star Wars.

Hayden played Anakin perfectly. He was always my favorite character as a kid. Hayden had some bad dialogue, but I also think his cringey moments were intentional, they were showing how antisocial and egotistical a child raised by the Jedi would be, not to mention constantly being told he’s the chosen one and that he has to be stoic and can’t love anyone. The pressure they put on him at such a young age was insane. Anakin was the way he was because the Jedi were fuckin with his head. He was just a kid that wanted to help people and be a hero, and the Jedi ruined him. They don’t even teach him about the dark side so he knows how to avoid it, they just tell him it’s bad and make him feel ashamed whenever he’s conflicted.
Some of his best acting is in episode 2, after he murders the sand people and he’s screaming at Padme, the hatred and shame he’s expressing is amazing. He only gets better in episode 3, he’s great at acting with his face, the suffering and pain he can convey with his eyes alone always hit me hard. I love this dude and I think his performance is wildly misunderstood

Or people ignoring that the actors have to act to what the script says and act as best they can and call them crappy actors when it is just the script (twilight movies for example).
