    Colorism predates racism. That caste system was everywhere and still is everywhere.

  • @lindacurwen2053
    @lindacurwen2053 Před 4 měsíci +20

    I think the plumber scene spoke to the caste system in a nuanced way. 1. Although he is a plumber and she is the homeowner - he feels superior; 2. he doesn't "want" to interact with her; 3. altho they share human experiences- death and loss - and even inhumaness (he mentions his father was unkind) they are still unable to connect.

    • @cv8499
      @cv8499 Před 4 měsíci +13

      Yes, and it's her getting him to talk about these common human experiences that finally gets him to recognize her humanity--at least long enough to fix her damn pipes.

    • @funnyguyla
      @funnyguyla Před 4 měsíci +5

      Maybe I missed something. It wasn't really clear to me that he felt superior. He was there to do a job. Regardless of his politics, he should have realized how off-putting his MAGA had would be to some people. But if he really had issues with her being a Black woman, he could have left. And if she really had issues with his MAGA hat, she could have shown him the door and hired someone else. Instead, she attempted to connect with him rather than be uncomfortable and it appeared to work. At least that's how I saw it.

    • @lindacurwen2053
      @lindacurwen2053 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @funnyguyla great perspective, and I agree. However, I was speaking in reference to the caste system.

    • @cv8499
      @cv8499 Před 4 měsíci +8

      @@funnyguyla The thing is, when he got there, he barely talks to her at first, and sort of ignores her concerns, refusing to even examine her pipes and just rushed straight to giving her an estimate. It was clear he was giving her bare-minimum service so he could get out of there quickly. Only after she makes the effort to connect with him does he give her problem his actual attention. While that scene wouldn't have seemed to explicitly relate to caste or him feeling superior to her, the MAGA hat implies it.

    I like your review of the movie - I saw it yesterday and read the book last year. I’ve looked at a couple of reviews and the scene with Nick Offerman wearing the MAGA cap seems to have not been very effective for some, but for me, it was extremely effective. My interpretation was that people waste so much time assuming that we are different when in reality we’re all sharing the human experience. In that moment, Ms. Wilkerson used her intellect to break down that barrier by asking the plumber about his personal life. After that, he was more willing to do the job fairly.

    • @catmouse2882

      He was forced to see humanity in her...and in return she saw humanity in him. Thats what I got from that scene.

    I met Isabel Wilkerson! She gave a talk at Harvard, and I had a chance to chat at length with her after her talk. She is one of the most brilliant people I've ever met, and I still remember that conversation to this day. (This was before she had published "Caste," back when she was developing the ideas for the book.)
    Ambedkar is actually the name of the lecture series at Harvard that hosted Isabel Wilkerson.

    I think it’s really good that the film feels like a 100 or 101 course to the deeper issue of the caste system and racism. It needs to be at somewhat of a base level so that it can be digested by more people, but prompting them to go learn and research more. Can’t have a 10 hour film breaking it all down. No one would go see it and so much would be lost from anyone outside of a scholar that focuses on this subject matter. I think it was done perfectly and it definitely is sparking ALOT of conversation which was the point.

Yes, there have been horrific events all over the world, and slavery and the Holocaust are two of them. How to travel to another state to see this movie with my husband, we are in an interracial relationship, but we still had a lot to say about how we felt about the movie. The one scene that was hardest for him to watch was a Trayvon Martin scene he had to get up a season to go to the restroom, the hardest part for me to watch was with the little boy at the pool. This movie was very hard to digest, but still recommend.

    I have read many times we are spirits having experiences in earthly bodies. We have the abilities to rise above our earthly animal instincts that the human body comes programmed with. All species of animals without intervention are territorial and destroy competition for their territory (exception is the cappybara). When the spirit over rides the temptation of animal instinct to forgive, to make peace, to care, to love. Free random acts of kindness and free senseless acts of beauty elevates humanity.

    This sounds so fascinating. I'm definitely interested in reading/watching this. I really enjoy factual organized arguments like Joseph wanted but I also love artistic introspective emotional presentations like The Thin Red Line, for instance, when executed well. This sounds like a mix. Raw truthful stories told by actors and storytellers.
    From the sound of it I wonder if it's anything like "For Colored Girls". Amazing film I randomly picked up at the library ten years ago and it's one of those movies that changes you. I think Joseph may have seen it due to it starring the lovely Miss Jackson and Nick due to it's creative merit and his proximity to Joseph.
    Incredible movie and the dvd included a short documentary about the slam poetry movement and the artist that inspired the stories in the movie. She is brave as hell. For the dvd you get the best of both. The political perspective and artistic expression.
    (If you haven't seen For Colored Girls, please do, it's amazing - Short warning there is some traumatic subject material but IMO worth it.)

    Fun fact: Mr. T chose that as his showbiz name for the same reason--so that people would be forced to address him as "Mr." and give him that respect.
    Anyway, I thought the movie was phenomenal. My only reservation was in how she talked about Jewish people being white, without delving into the fact that Judaism is an ethno-religion. This, I think, is the comment that earned Whoopie Goldberg a fair amount of backlash on the View. But it does drive home the idea that even though many Jewish people appeared indistinguishable from other Germans, the Nazis were able to successfully categorize them as a separate race and put them in a lower caste in people's minds, thus dehumanizing them. Would be interesting to hear Wilkerson speak on the current state of affairs in Gaza and how it plays into her thesis.
