    This video is to bring you a closer look at the Bommer 3023-3-633 Double Acting Spring Hinge .
    The 3023 is the representative of the fact this is a half surface hinge and half surface is in the reference to the leaf that mortise and will attache to the door and in this case will be surface mounted to the face of the door.
    The -3 is the representative of the size which you can see in the link called Template, is really not a dimension that you can take off of this hinge.
    The 3" reference is actually a reference of how thick of a door this hinge is made to accommodate.
    The 633 refers to the finish, satin brass finish.
    Let's go back to 3023.
    So you see you've got the leafs back here the door leaf pivots around like this and this is the jamb leaf.
    You can see that you would push this leaf back, the jamb will set back here, you would attache this leaf to the jamb through these screws.
    Once you get that attached to the jamb the hinge will look like this, your door set's into your packet here.
    The 3" specifically means that this is intended for 3/4" to 1" doors.
    Anything thinner or thicker will be a problem.
    The door leaf simply surface mount to the face of the door, your door is gonna set into here. Screws are included.
    This barrel will handle the spring aspect of the door loaded about this way and of course the back side is handled when the door is pushed on the opposite direction.
    Really nice quality hinge by Bommer.
    You can see the logo and right above that "Made in USA" and i am proud to represent them.
    There's guide lines below this video for max weight.
    These are small hinges even though they are not small technical.
    With 2 Hinges: 35
    With 3 Hinges: 39
    Maximum Door Width
    With 2 Hinges: 2'0"
    With 3 Hinges: 2'8"
    There is a link below this video to Installation Instructions and that shows in general how the 3023 series double acting spring hinge work.
    If you have three hinges two of them need to be on top because that's the business end of everything what's happening with the mechanics of the double acting door all the weight it's gonna be born really on the top hinge on the top hinges so don't put that hinge on the middle.
    If you feel that you are on the border line or something go with the 3th hinge because you ask each barrel and each spring to share the load because if you snap one of these by over tension it the hinge is irreparable plus these hinges also doing the job of keeping the door in a plumb.
    One thing that is not very obvious in the extended description is the thickness of this material here between where the jamb will be and the packet of the door will go. That's important because if you take your width you will ultimate have to determine what is the net width of my door you have to determine that.
    That would be based on how much margin to leave here and how much margin to leave between the door and the jamb or between two doors if is a double door.
    Those conditions will vary depending on the thickness of the door, the width of the door will depend weather is single or double, the thickness of the door and how the edge of the door is treated is square or radius.
    Per the Template this dimension is 9/32 so that's 0.28125 so you have to allow just over 1/4" just for the margin of the amount of hinge that you have between edge of the hinge and the jamb.
    So you probably want to leave another 1/16".
    You can have a door with just a square edge if you've got a single square edge door you want to make sure you leave enough room for the door to not be making contact with the jamb.
    I've done this many times by all means reach out to me if you have any questions or you like to disuse it.
    If you have thicker doors Bommers has larger version of these.
    There is also a link to Technical Specifications below this which gives a lot of information specifically regarding setting the tension. On the spring there are arrows and that indicates the direction to increase the tension.
    Tension rod it's gonna be included and tension pin included also inserted into the holes you reveal.
    5 holes is what the instructions refers to on how much tension to set.
    Screws are included painted to match.
    Several different finishes are also available.
    If you have any questions regarding Bommer 3023-3-633 Double Acting Spring Hinge or any other Bommer product please feel free to reach out to us.
    Thank you.

    Hi Rich, when I put my hinges on by following a video, The door leaf was put on the inner part of the door and you said put it on the front of the door. The bottom hinge I don't have a problem but the top keeps falling out. I bought a 3rd hinge to see if this would resolve the problem but it didn't. Before doing it your way, do you think this is the reason why the door is not working correctly and by changing the top hinges do I need to do the same with the bottom? Thanks for your help.

      The Bommer 3023 series hinges are what is called "have surface" which means that one leaf is mounted to the face of the door and the other leaf is mounted to the jamb as a standard hinge wood mount.
      I have included a link below this message to the template and on the right side of that template shows a cross-section of what the hinge is to look like when it is installed.
      Please confirm this is how your hinge is installed and also please email, simply reply to this message, photographs of your existing installation.

    Hello and thank you for this video. I have a french door and the bottom half came off from the wall. I figured out how to release the tension to get the hinges off (thanks to your video) and now I am not sure how to reset the tension. The door is back in place and I figured that I would just do the same thing. Please let me know if there is something I am missing. Thanks!

    I used another model (1514H) of these recently that has the "hold-open" feature on some "saloon" doors, although most everything is functioning well I have these two anomalies; 1) one door hangs perfectly perpendicular to the jam & header but the other rests slightly (maybe 2 degrees) open, 2) I had to mount the hinges upside down on one side compared to the other in order for the hold-open feature to operate in the same direction--this also sets the hinges to mirror each other's operation (i.e. the long swing-out occurs in the same direction). I'm wondering if should actually have the hinges mounted the same-side-up because; a) might the hinge have a slight slant toward open/closed that is exaggerated by the doors being mirrored?, and/or b) maybe the doors swing away from each other better if one is on the "short-swing" and the other on the"long"? I purposely have very little space tolerance with these doors and so I want to make sure I exhaust all options (including flipping the hinges on one of the doors around) before using shims or making modifications to the door dimensions.
    Any feedback would be much appreciated.

    Are these hinges made rustproof for exterior use gate in marine environment?

    • @absupplynet
      @absupplynet  Před 2 lety +1

      Sugatsune makes a stainless hinge, but not hold open. Using the Bommer 1515H for this for an exterior application will certainly work, but given things made of steel, eventually will need to be replaced.

    hoping you can help. i removed the an old door and the hinge immediately slammed to the left ( i have no idea what tool adjusts the hinge so i can open it back up to install the door. I cant remove the double action spring hinge as when it slammed to the left it covered up all the screws. All it says on the hings is Canaropa Japan. the plate that screws to the door measures 6 inches. How do I get the plate to swing back to the right so i can install the door. It is a swinging door

    • @absupplynet
      @absupplynet  Před 7 lety

      As soon as I read your first line I screamed out “ouch” - LOL. I hope your fingers were clear of that. The issue that you have is actually quite simple to mitigate. The tool that you need is called a tension rod as seen here:
      absupply.net/bommer-f1480-tension-rod-for-bommer-3029-6-3029-7-4010-6-4010-7-4020-6-4030-6-4040-6-4040-7-hinges.aspx
      and if the height of your hinges 6 inch the item is seen here would be the proper tool to use to be able to loosen the tension on the spring allowing you to remove the tension pin that is in the barrel allowing you to freely swing open the hinge leaf.

      I just had the same experience yesterday removing a similar hinge from an old door. Unfortunately, my thumb was not clear of the hinge. As my father always said when a bit of skin was broken, "Now it's a project." I'm working on rehanging an old door in Paris, France and I have to say, this video, leading me to your site with its wealth of complimentary information has been great. I'll stop by a local supplier of similar hinges to see if I can find a tension rod. And then I have about 8 coats of paint to remove to get to the pins. Merci!

    If the hinge is squeaky, can anything be done to lubricate them? they look closed and inaccessible to lubrication..

    • @absupplynet
      @absupplynet  Před 6 lety

      According to the manufacturer it is permissible to lubricate the hinge and you would do so right at the seam where the tension collar rests on top of the barrel of the hinge. I would mask off the rest of the area and then attempt to use a WD-40 type spray and lubricate the area on both springs and allow gravity to permit the lubricant to seep down into the spring cavity. Please report back your success after doing so.

    • @arianefr78
      @arianefr78 Před 8 lety

      +RICHARD HOWARD Thanks for answering. Yes I've tried many combinations of increasing the tension on one side and decreasing it on the other, on the top set and not on the bottom set and visa versa etc.., and in doing that I've managed to decrease the gap by an inch. It's a very old hinge and probably dates back about 20-30 years, I've tried giving it a shot of WD40 as well, I'm just trying to avoid replacing the hinges because I don't have anyone to help me at the moment and the door is quite heavy... Is it possible to replace one hinge at a time and not have to take the door off completely?

    • @absupplynet
      @absupplynet  Před 8 lety

      +arianefr78 It is not possible to safely remove only one hinge. If you get help, please swap the hinges (top hinge to bottom location and bottom hinge to top location) and let me know if this resolves this issue.
