  • Oh Sony A7C, what could have been. If Sony put in just the smallest bit of effort to make this camera reach it's potential, it would have been the best camera for youtubers. But they held back, I guess we'll see the features in the A7C II. Let's talk about the deal breaker, and a couple minor flaws to what otherwise is a great little camera!

      You know what all the canon fan boys hate hate so much. Is almost all videos I watch be it car CZcams channels, exploration channels, haunted location videos, podcast channels etc 90% of them use Sony cameras. The significant majority use the A7III or the RX100 series like I have albeit less commonly. The next most common cameras I see are Panasonic either the GH5 or S1H!. I literally never never see people using canon cameras to film CZcams stuff even extremely high end, production company type videos and short films!. I only ever see a tiny number of channels using like the C200, C300 maybe 2%!. Surely that speaks for itself Sony is absolutely dominating in the video mirrorless world!. Canon fan boys obviously go mental when I mention this lol.

    Thanks Casey - these videos I know are supposed to be light hearted but actually they are helpful.
    As for the catalyst timings - I only need 5 - 6 seconds of stabalize here and there in what I do - saves me having to cart around a gimbal so I reckon it'll still work for me.
    If I shoot using the default profile do you think catalyst browse will mess even that up for colour.

    • @R0XyM0h
      @R0XyM0h Před 3 lety

      i'd suggest for your light need and usage that you shoot the clips that you know you'd want to stabilize in separate clips than the rest of your video , this way you end up only needing to use catalyst for those small clips so you won't ruin the colors of the full video

  • @stephenhowe316
    @stephenhowe316 Před 3 lety +8

    The A7SIII is sensational, and I'm glad you're aiming for that camera. My only gripe about your A7C review is about using a gimbal. That would remove your stabe problem with the A7C, your workflow issue with Catalyst, the problem of image/lens cropping, the problem of colour shifting, and compatibility issues with third party lenses, like your Laowa. Five problems solved by using a decent gimbal? A modern gimbal could also replace the tripod you're carrying anyway, and give you more cinematic options with perspective and programmed timelapse. I'm still wondering why you haven't explored a modern gimbal option from Camera Canada? Matti Happyboi uses them, why not the Kasey Pony of Hope? In all other respects the A7C footage, with both the Tamron and the 20mm 1.8, looks great. My gripe with the A7C is the price relative to performance, but what it does, it does really well, particularly with the improved Sony colour science and real-time tracking AF, and it's one of the best 24 megapixel stills cameras, too, which the A7SIII doesn't compete with.

  • @rawandxyz
    @rawandxyz Před 3 lety +4

    Note that if you stabilize in the Catalyst browse app, you probably need to use faster shutter speed so that each frame doesn't have motion blur from your footsteps.
    Also it crops in, so you loose some resolution :) especially if you're shooting 1080. So you'd have to do 4k and export video as 1080 to not lose quality.

    • @2010SLP
      @2010SLP Před 3 lety +2

      He never uses ND filters and likes his Toneh. It’s safe to assume his shutter speeds are always quite fast outdoors.

    • @rawandxyz
      @rawandxyz Před 3 lety +1

      I think you're confusing things here.
      I'm not saying shutter speed causes quality loss. You would want different shutter speeds based on different situations.
      Here i'm referring to two limitations of stabilizing footage with this approach:
      1- You NEED a fast shutter speed. How fast? as fast as you can have the video without sudden motion blurs cause by abrupt movements. like foot steps. When you step there's a quick jitter, up down motion. This, on slower shutter speeds renders some motion blur. Once you have the motion blur in the pictures (the frames of the video) even when you stabilize them, the motion blur stays. So the video will be stable BUT every time you step, there's a motion blur that appears. I found an example on yt: czcams.com/video/eITYkg2qam4/video.html
      2- Any post processing that stabilizes a video, will cause lose of resolution. So ideally you need higher resolution video to compensate for the lost resolution to meet your export resolution. Of course you can accept some loss and consider it just fine :) that's up to you.

    Genuine question. If you're using a manual focus old school lens with a modern Sony, don't you have to manually enter the focal length so the IBIS can work properly?
    If so, why can't the camera use that info so the gyro data can be used correctly for catalyst?
    You need to get onto the lizards about this, they're missing a trick.

  • @Hazard4Tactical

    Can you tell the camera which focal length you lens is? Maybe then Catalyst will work. In Fujifilm cameras there is a setting where you can bank different focal lengths with a custom name and you tell your XT4 that. Then if you go to a non-electronic lens, it'll pick that option.

On no budget shoots (which is 99.99% of what I shoot) where no money is exchanging hands I typically don’t dual record.
    Honestly I’m more afraid I’ll misplace gear or get robbed or something, my card error rate is like less than one card per 5 years, with no serious data loss. If a card or battery acts strange (e.g. flaky battery behavior, or card suddenly requires a repair upon insertion, I retire it).

    Keep it up. You're doing a great job fighting for common sense where you'd think common sense belongs, haha. This is an uphill battle in the moronic world of digital cameras where the only added feature with every new release is a higher sticker price with a cripple hammer blow. Unending pursuit for usability among numskulls who design and seemingly never use own products. So don't stop, ever. You hear me?!

    1. Оптическая + Матричная
    2. Оптическая + Catalyst
    3. Матрица + Catalyst
    Всё просто

  • @DiscoverThailand
    @DiscoverThailand Před 3 lety +3

    Sony should include the catalyst directly into the camera! I am pretty sure it would be possible as Action cameras are using a similar stabilization method directly into the camera.

      it's worthy for ungrade. depend on price. In US A7C cheaper than A73, 200USD. In my country, A7C's more expense than A73. I wait A7C sell off.
