Some of the many celebrities that have died from alcoholism over the years include Veronica Lake and Richard Burton. These two stars were two of the most notable celebrities of Hollywood’s Golden Age. However, finding fame and success in Hollywood wasn’t enough to keep them from turning to the bottle. In addition to alcoholism, Veronica Lake suffered from schizophrenia during her final years. Her abuse of alcohol only made her mental health worse, and she spent her last days believing that the government was spying on her. Richard Burton turned to alcoholism due to his dissatisfaction with his Hollywood career, as well as his marriage to fellow star Elizabeth Taylor. Richard preferred acting in plays to acting in films and hated himself for all of the time that he spent pursuing success doing the latter.
While Veronica Lake and Richard Burton are still remembered fondly by film fans, other celebrities who died tragically of alcoholism have been essentially forgotten. One unsung star that died tragically from alcoholism at a young age is Barbara Payton. Though Barbara never achieved fame like Veronica Lake, she was successful enough to star alongside stars like Gary Cooper. Sadly, that didn’t stop her from dying at the age of only 39 after suffering from alcoholism for a number of years. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at celebrities who died from alcohol.

You'd think they might have been happy

Before he joined the Three Stooges with his brother Moe and Larry Fine, replacing his older brother Shemp, Curly had a full head of hair and a mustache. He shaved both for the act, and he drank because he felt unattractive to women without the hair and mustache. It's believed his drinking led to the strokes that caused him to leave the Stooges and then ended his life at 48 years old.

You are wrong about Hank Williams, though I know it's an often repeated assertion. Hank had an alcohol problem, certainly, but he was a binge drinker, and would go from being dry to going on binges. He in fact died from a variety of contributing factors, but he didn't die from alcoholism. He died from a heart attack. His general physical condition was poor, he had a debilitating back problem, was taking chloral hydrate from a quack doctor, certainly a factor the day he died, and had only been drinking a few beers on that final trip. In fact the autopsy showed his liver was normal, not diseased, which is never true of people who die of alcoholism. His death was a tragedy at 29, there were many factors, and alcohol was part of a poor lifestyle and a poor physical condition, but he died of heart failure, and in some accounts I have read it is noted that the spinabifida condition he had, if not treated very early in life, causes organ deterioration and usually a shortened life, so even if he hadn't been a drinker, it's probably true that he was born with a body that wouldn't have taken him to an old age, alcohol or no alcohol.

I do understand, that you have to produce content, that is probably, a little more salacious, to get more views, but I wish, it could also be a little kinder and less judgemental. Several people on this list, had childhoods, that were hell. One, as a child, was first encouraged and then, forced, into prostitution. As a child fgs. Also watching your friends and family, swinging from trees, because they were considered, sub-human. So many more details, that I totally understand and relate to, that you aren't able to fit in, to your vids. Sometimes. Honestly, I very rarely, have a problem with your work. I enjoy them, I learn from them, I've cried, laughed, had so many different emotions. Basically, you produce great stuff. I think that's why I made this comment. To begin this, with uncomfortable and saddening, judgements. You've edged close, before but never crossed that line. This time, in MY opinion, you did. I disliked the video BUT, I will still recommend your channel, your work, production, scripts, everything. You have always been a fav of mine and hopefully, it'll continue that way.
Just don't turn tabloid, for views. I know. I'm only one person. It would be good to know, you hear, if it is only ONE.

That was a pretty uninformed statement in the opening of this video. These people didn’t turn to alcoholism. They weren’t weak. It is a disease, and that in the year 2021 that still has to be stated is telling how behind we are as a society. Do you think the thousands that have died of addiction, be it to drugs or alcohol, thought as children, hey that’s what I want for my life? I assure you as a nurse and mother of a child who died from addiction no one wants to be an alcoholic or addict. The people who suffer from this disease are usually intelligent, empathetic, creative, loving, caring individuals, who also may suffer from depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues. These actors are no different than regular people. They have the same struggles as so many others.

I would have thought that Curly Howard of the Three Stooges fame would have been included. After his divorce from his second wife, he began to drink heavily and eat as a way of coping with feelings of inferiority brought on the fact that he did not like having to shave his head for the act, thinking it was turning off the women, even though he was popular with them all his life. As a result, Curly never went out in public without a hat on as he felt self conscious about his appearance, saying he felt like a little kid with his head shaved. Because of that, Curly eventually fell ill, and suffered the stroke that ended his career, and led to the return of brother Shemp into the act. Curly Howard died January 18th, 1952 at the age of 48.
