LS/TH400 Install requires a bolt on adapter

  • The “Ring” adapter wouldn’t allow my torque converter to mate to the flexplate, there was a .200” Gap. 👎
    The proper way to mount a TH400 to an LS engine with standard crankshaft flange is to use a 6.0 flange adapter, longer bolts, and a Flat flexplate.
    A flat flexplate w/hub adapter puts the ring gear in the same position as a dished flexplate mounted to the flange/hub.

    I have the dished flexplate and longer bolt kit. It bolts on the outside of flexplate. Got it way back when it was cheap. Clearances were good without any grinding but had to elongate my holes. I'm running a 2800 stall FTI converter.

      Jeff Newman What Transmission was it? I’m curious what the difference in reach would be between your setup and the way I did it?
      The reach from the Crankshaft register face to end of the adapter would be long using it outside the dished flexplate, .800” + .130”= .930” 🤔. I’m curious which transmission this will work in?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 6 lety +4

      Lime Well, you could use either, I chose to use Ultra Black RTV since I know it’ll seal the threads and not let oil seep out. For some reason LS engines will leak oil out the flexplate bolt holes, so I’m told. I can’t stand a leaking vehicle, so I try hard to avoid any potential leaks. 👍

    So without the welding BB on the converter snout the ring style should have worked right? Also, if you could machine the spacer for clearance why not machine the ring spacer to get the required clearance?

    • @HeadFlowInc

      harperjmichael No, the simple ring adapter doesn’t work with a TH400. The TH400 required the “Flat” flexplate and bolt on adapter.

      M Gar TH400 doesn’t use a kick down cable, it uses an electric solenoid triggered by a micro-switch. You can setup the kick down by either mounting a switch near the throttle on the engine or throttle pedal. I want to hook mine up but haven’t done it yet. Thanks for watching and the question! JD

      @@HeadFlowInc are there any conversion kits for connecting that switch or will I just have to fabricate something up

    • @mgar7186

      I think I have the solution for my application its called a pedal kickdown switch. It bolts right up to the pedal assembly on a 72 chevelle. I originally had the switch located on the carburetor but since I will be swapping to an Ls with drive by cable and throttle body I had to find a different option for the kickdown switch.

      Thanks for the tip, I’ll look into one of the peddle switches, I’d like to have a functional kick down! JD

    What torque converter are you using?

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I’ve gone through 3 converters so far! I haven’t installed the 3rd one yet.
      1. Don’t waste your money on a B&M anything especially the Holeshot 3000 it’s cheap junk.
      2. I had decent success with a TCI 10” Super Street Fighter w/anti ballooning plate 3500-3800.
      3. New converter is the “Entry” level boost PTC 10” w/anti-ballooning plate spec’d for my combo.
      *** The best Bang for the Buck converters are the Jegs XHD 10” built by TSI. Decent price and a solid/proven performer up to 800+ wheel HP. JD

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 5 lety +1

      jeremy rock Maybe 🤷‍♂️. I know I needed way more clearance than what the bb was blocking, at least I think. I don’t have the measurements off hand but there is a significant difference between the “reach” of the “Ring” & dished flexplate compared to the “Bolt on” adapter & flat flexplate. Either way you choose, be sure to verify the required space between the seated torque converter and mounting surface on the flexplate. 👍

      HeadFlowInc thanks for the advice I’m going to be mating my 02 4.8 to a th350. The 4.8 was originally mated to a manual tranny I think I will go with the flex plate you used I don’t like the idea of egging the holes out to the torque converter

    • @HeadFlowInc

      jeremy rock Never grind the tabs on the converter, it’s best to work the flexplate. But like you saw this flexplate worked fine no mods. 👍

  • @johnandbethwhitener8259

    Is that a B&M torque converter

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes very loose B&M Holeshot 3000 converter. It didn’t stay very long, I’m using a TCI Super Street Fighter 3500-3800 w/anti-ballooning plate #241002 until I can afford to upgrade. JD

    • @johnandbethwhitener8259

      Do you think the B&M 20484 would work good

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 3 lety +1

      I’ll be honest, I’ve never used a B&M converter I’d recommend to anyone because they’re cheaply made for the price. You can get a entry level PTC converter for +- $500.00-$550.00 shipped. I can’t justify spending over $400.00+ on a B&M.
      The only off the shelf converter id recommend is the Jegs XHD converters made by TSI. Currently on sale for $337.99 are excellent quality with dual anti-ballooning plates rated at 800hp. Check them out in the stall range you need, if going turbo make sure it’s big enough to get into boost. JD

    • @HeadFlowInc
      @HeadFlowInc  Před 6 lety +2

      meathead1011980 This is a 6.0 flexplate 😉. All 6.0 flexplates are “Flat”, the early 6.0 has a .400” extended crankshaft register/hub 1999-2000 used the flat flexplate no adapter. The 2001-up 6.0 uses the bolt on adapter, seen in my video, to properly locate the flexplate to the starter. 👍

      I have 2006 6.0 on a 4L80E it's the original engine with the original trans ..the problem I'm having is that the flexplate keeps breaking around the bolts which is around the bolt on adapter(spacer)..do you know what could be the cause of this?..its my work van and it has 523,000 miles runs great and shifts smoothly. I never had any work done on the trans except change fluid and filter..
