Congrats to Braden R. on winning the GPi Case! More giveaways in the future, stay tuned. :)
When you were assembling the Game Boy with the circuit board from kite, why didn't you use NES buttons for the X and Y buttons like the Game Boy Zero?
You should make a gameboy horror that actually works
You should make a gba sp raspberry pi portable
Can you remake the gameboy zero
I loved the custom Game Boy. don't you sell that console?
One negative about the Kite is that you have to use his image if you want WiFi because he baked it into the linux Kernel. This means if you update RetroPie and you chose to update the kernel and modules its bye bye WiFi. So you are essentially at the mercy of Kite if you want an up-to-date kernel.
Tory Berra there should be a way to work around that, no?
@@1anre Not at this time unfortunately. He may address this in the next KCS release. Maybe post on the forms and ask him personally?
This is the best review I've seen yet. It's informative to all 3 devices. I'm definitely going to get the Retroflag GPi and a 6 pack of rechargable batteries! Thanks for your review :)
ultragreenmario go to Amazon and get the AA usb batteries, I got some for my gpi and I got 2 and a half hrs of game play and I think I could have gotten 3 but I got tired of timing it. The ones I got were blue and cost 16$
Love the choice of AA batteries for the GPi. It’s akin to its inspiration.
Yeah this wormy dude is so brainwashed it’s unbelievable
Looks like I'm waiting for Kite's next preorder. That extra power and customization is killer.
that circuit sword unit looks absolutely amazing. i couldnt do the work myself, but id love to buy one already set up like yours
I've been waiting for a good comparison on these, thank you for posting!
I got the Gameshell since I'm a games programmer. It's not the greatest option for emulation since it's a bit fiddly but I'm still happy with it. It's running a full linux system underneath so that's amazing.
makes my heart smile knowing that marcus aurelius truly appreciates linux.
What a time to be alive for retro gaming mods!
I've got a circuit sword, extremely happy with it. I take it on long plane rides all the time and with a 4000mah battery I've never run low mid flight. I've got two psp1000 analogue sticks in mine and 4 back buttons for running PSX games. One thing Wermy didn't mention is it can even run a couple of dreamcast games with reicast. 3D stuff is kind of slow but 2d arcade ports like marvel vs capcom 2 are perfectly playable.
I too also liked the last Retro case (Circuit Sword) albeit partially scared by the extra drilling and soldering tasks which need to be done on it.
Thanks for the great vid Wermy. Can’t wait for the next one!
im glad they use AA battery bay, easy to swap out on the go when u cant recharge
Why not make a video about modding the Retroflag GPi case to use li-ion battery instead of 3 AA?
do it then
Theres already videos out there for that?
There's literally no point in doing that. The 3AA's are fine.
@@jimmygillard They're higher energy density, lighter weight and rechargeable . Means more battery life and less expense on buying batteries. Of course theres a point in doing it.
@@felixschrodinger7533 You can get rechargeable AA batteries.
Great show case! I have a CircuitSword myself and while I really like it (it even runs PSP games), I think you understated the amount of work it takes. Part of that for me was that I messed up a couple of times, did things in the wrong order (like inserting brass inserts into the screen bracket only AFTER installing it). I also did most of the case modding without power tools because I'd never used a Dremel before and didn't want to mess up the one case I had. Doing everything with hobby knives took far longer than needed! If you're ever going to do a "beginner mistakes you should avoid" video, I have some notes for you :D
I wonder if they were working to a price point on the Gpi, and decided to leave out the LiPo charging circuitry to meet that. It's the only thing I would criticise about the case though, apart from that it looks awesome, and I'm sure there will be plenty of LiPo conversions shown as soon as it hits the streets. I am now torn between the Gpi and the Kite. Not a big fan of the ClockworkPi Gameshell, but for a certain audience (I'm thinking younger makers) it would be perfect. For an older tech head like me, the Kite is spot on. Thanks for the informative comparison.
This video is exactly what I needed :) Thank you!
I'm so tempted to add an analog stick to my circuitsword build now.
Thanks wermy. Those three are my favorite handheld emulation projects. Great to see them all side by side. :)
Love the vids! 🤘🏾 Makes me want to learn about all this so I can get into DIY and join the forums.
the curcuit sword looks hella amazing but sadly sods like me don't have any tools to tinker with it in the way we want. Gonna have to choose the first one.
I'm confused about the purpose of the barrel jack on the GPi; is it meant to charge rechargable batteries in the case? Or just there as a built in option in case you mod it for a lithium ion
It's just there so you can plug it in if your batteries run out, not charging. I love the original Game Boy but I feel like this (the use of AA batteries) is one thing they didn't need to reproduce exactly on this. 😁
@@wermy ahh that makes more sense, and yeah definitely a strange choice in 2019 :P thanks for the reply!
I do wonder if modding it to enable a rechargable battery... if that port could be utilized to recharge the batteries??
@@eversinging that's probably the best way to go. But at that point you'd probably want to squeeze in a charging board and use micro USB instead of whatever that built in port is.
Honestly I'd go with the Retroflag just because of its design and large library
Well, I missed out on the Circuit Sword pre-order.... I love my first gen Kite board.
I was even on the mailing list for it and I got no email :(
I was sold on the Circuit Sword back during the first preorder. I ended up waiting for the second round and got mine. I couldn't be happier. Mine is completely glue free, I designed and printed parts to get everything to fit together. Obviously, it was terribly expensive. I spent near $300 to get everything but IMO, it was totally worth it. So much fun and the most power you can have on the go for this kind of thing. Also super fun to plug it into a TV with another controller and play with a friend on something like Mario Kart.
Mattboy300 can you send me the 3D files? thomash.almeida@hotmail.com
I actually like the idea of AA batteries. Buy some 2800mAh rechargeable batteries and you're good to go. Gives you the option to swap out drained batteries for a fully charged set. I would love to see how well 3 2800mAh AA rechargeable batteries would stand up compared to a lithium battery.
One question, can rechargeable AA batteries be charged from within that unit? I'm assuming no, considering the power draw and charge times for AA rechargeables can be crazy long.
I'm with you here. The fact that it takes batteries makes it a more more appealing rainy-day choice than a standard rechargable handheld. Just keep the thing in a box with a few extra batteries and it'll hold up great.
I like the Gpi case one as it’s a big more pocketable. Also everyone has said how well made it is. Then it would be the one that needs soldering etc.
I feel a little weird about the handheld legend site. They're using my splash screen on their glass photos without asking. I released it to the Sudomod community for them to use for their builds, but using it for commercial purposes is a little questionable.
I wish you could put a Compute module in the GPi case, _that_ would solve a lot. (assuming you can get a CM easier than a Pi-W)
i wish too.
i wonder though if one can desolder the unnecessary things from a b3+ (ethernet, usbs and so on, and the pins) and use some kind of custom printed cartridge with it.
it looks like the cartridge is the outmost part of the case, so you can theoretically have wider cartridge, so as long as you can manage to keep the same height of the two pcbs i guess it's possible...
or maybe someone can make a custom pcb that has the sodimm connector instead the springy pins, and maybe it would again require custom cartridge as it is still bigger than the zero
You really need to take a look at the experimental pi case. It's a gameboy case that can contain and run a pi4 portably!
Can you update de 3D files you used on the circuit sword?
Thanks for showing the relative complexities.
Worth saying using 1.2v 2800 mah batteries on the pi case (what I use) will make a big difference with battery life
I have no idea why using rechargeable AA is a problem. THAT is exactly the reason why I am going to buy that system.
Ed Mundy's Freeplay Zero/CM3 are also great options if you love the Gameboy Advance form factor and can be built with only a little soldering and a reasonable about of case modification. That said Kite's work is amazing and I am a huge fan of my Circuit Sword
Can you do a review & comparison between the new Bittboy V3, RS-97 Plus & LDK Game handheld?
The reason alkaline batteries don't last as long as rechargable NiMH in the GPi case due to alkaline batteries really being meant for low power draw scenarios. One-time lithium and rechargable NiMH are the better choices for high power draw devices like the GPi.
Very nice video. Really wish I had the skills you and the other sudomod guys have to put together a Gameboy Zero. I think the Retroflag one is a better fit for me.
The Clockwork GameShell looks promising. I love the Pico-8 and a little NES seems just right though the price needs to come down before I make a move.
Retroflag GPI case and gameshell can be bought from China while circuit swords can't.That is why I love the first two handheld the most.I hope I can buy circuit swords in the future.Really like the circuit designing.
was here from the very very beginning.. what an adventure.
Great video. I wouldn’t touch any of these with a ten foot pole though with the CM3 from FreePlay tech on the market. The gameboy advance is so much better and more ergonomic. It’s on par with the circuit sword but for more affordable. It’s a no brainer to me but great video regardless.
Thanks for this really good overview!
Would PS Vita analog sticks work with the circuitsword board?
Zach Hansen YES
👍👍👍
Yeah boyyy 😍💪
Keep up the great work Wermy!
I wish I can just buy the circuitsword game boy, it look so nice, but needs so many parts and diy....I guess I m too lazy...
I hate his pre-order & wait scheme. Just put them in production and open a regular storefront FFS. The guy is a terrible businessman. He needs to partner with someone to do all that. Or just license his design to someone who can put it into regular production.
Whoa thanks! This video answer clearly well all my questions about the gameboy. Just a question: do you know recalbox and what are your feeling about it versus retroflag?
4:13, T-Series
I understand why they use Aa battery’s it is because it was like that with the original gameboy!
Awesome
Great video. Gpi Case or me. Might do a swap out cause those batteries aren't going to last...
kite + megabat ftw
The circuit sword one I’m probably gonna make mine in green
Hi wermy 👋
👋
Anyway to raise that analog stick higher? I feel like it’s position that low would be really uncomfortable
you can get usb rechargeable AA batteries
looks like the Kite circuit sword as well as the retroflag GPI are not currently available for order... u_u,
It ended yesss fingers crossed 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽🤩
you didnt clip the screen connector in place on clockwork
Can u put a raspberry pi in a menzy comfy wallet, the stainless steel one?
It would look soo clean and slick.
It would also be a tough challenge
You can put only the mother board and a bluetooth module in the bottom half, and a screen in the top half, so u could have the controller separate, idk.
Any more info on the circuit sword with the Raspberry pi 3 in it? A build with the analog stick?
Im having audio problems with the gpi case. Any ideas? I cant find a working image and i dont have the tools to transfer the roms myself to the pi zero to make my own image.
Do you still have the STL files for the circuit sword? Specifically the rear button bracket for L1,L2,R1,R2
I suppose with mass production of GBZs this is good news for consumers now that the hungry demand can be met. I was torn that this would impact Kite, Helder and the likes though having more people in the GBZ community is a good thing and as AIO boards have been manufactured by hobbyists for years my feelings towards the potential impact is moot. The 3 GBZs I have in production I'll need to sell shortly. :D
I need this badly ! Really ! I wish I can get this !
nice Video! :) why chance to get a video comparison of the right Gameboy and the new Retrostone that comes out in 2 weeks? :D
i'm not sure which one to buy because my focus is on emulation of ps1 games without overheat and the case should have some nice 4 button setup on the back side :D
also is there a chance to buy a kit to build my own gameboy like the right one? :D (with all that 3D printed parts?)
What all is needed to mod the circuit sword the way you did it. also where can it be found and how much does it cost
I bought the usb AA batteries and got about 3hrs of game play
Cool
Love your vids braaaaaaah 👍
Edit - GPi battery mod. 😉
clockwork orange :) nice
When building a Circuit Sword, do you need an an actual replica Gameboy Housing, or can you use the Pi Zero Housing?
And honestly the best device for emulation would probably be a PSP or that other one that looks like a DS.
you ont get the same experience of using a original gameboy
Can you make a video where you go a little bit more in detail about the kite retro?
One thing that bothers me is the cartridge looks too fake on GPi Case. I also I hear that the speakers have some static hissing issues. The lack of a proper battery life indication can be an issue (but I take it that may be an issue with most RPi builds)
Most GBZ builds employ some battery monitoring using analog inputs from an ADC and some screen overlay scripts. Let's just say it's a long solved problem
How does the Bittboy 3 and Bittboy PocketGo compare to these in performance?
Why didn't i heard about the kite sword before?! It is just so fucking amazing. Do you have a tutorial with the tools and stuff?
They still make rechargeable AA batteries.
Anybody have any suggestions on where to find console building info and how to load all of my old games on there? I have over 70 from NES to Xbox 360 but am just now getting into the electronics field, so I'm a little lost.
GPi Case is what I could build if have a 3D printer, the simpler, could be great for other projects.
You Should Try Making A Minty PI In An Altoids Smalls Tin
is there anyone that sells prebuilt and ready CircuitSword? :P
Hey been watching since 1000 subs
when are you going to restock the electronics for the mintypi? i've literally been waiting for months to get them. have everything except for the electronics.
Nice video, mister Chris FromCZcams
i want the one that plays all the games best. also i want it prebuild....
When it comes to emulators I only play 1 gba (gameboy advanced) So I would go for something with a pi 0 so I would use either the gpi or stick with the minty pi and gameboy zero
i’m still waiting on my mintypi electronics
Helder started shipping out more preorders this week. He should have them all out in the next 2-3 weeks. Keep an eye on the email you use for paypal for a shipping notification.
LiLTrublMakr I am in the same boat, and I was beginning to think something was wrong. Thank you so much for the information!!!!
Yeah, there were a few issues with the first batch that went out that needed to be fixed before he sent any more out. That's why there was such a delay in pre orders. Everything should be fixed now though.
you said "(screen size) DPI screen" several times. that doesn't mean anything because DPI just stands for dots per inch so it's like saying "it's a resolution screen" or "a miles per hour car"
It’s a kind of display interface, like hdmi or spi (though to be clear spi is a general-purpose bus, not only for displays). www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/dpi/README.md
@@wermy til, sorry about that
restock your minty 3 battery pleeeaaassseee
How much does the circuit sword kit sells for?
Is there any screen protector available for the Retroflag gpi case?
Hello, how much mah for batteries of retroflag gpi for your test ? 2500mah ? 2800mah, 3000mah by batterie ?
Yeah this is good to know.
The ones I tested with were 2300mAh Energizer brand.
@@wermyIt is strange... my LCL Game Boy with a RPi 3A+ inside has a playtime of 5 hours with a 5000mah battery. Why a RPi Zero with 3x2300mah only 4 1/2 hours? oO"
@@adventureFAN because your 5000 mah battery is a 3.7v nominal battery. 3x AA's in series are 3.6v but still 2300 mah total. Batteries in series add the voltages but the amperage stays the same. If you put them in parallel the voltage stays the same. (1.2v) but the amperage adds up so would then be 6900mah. Not 3.6v at 6900mah
@@AlistairBrugsch Ah okey thx for the explanation =]
I have 2850mah nimh batteries... I hope they will hold up for over 5 hours.
new sub! your videos are awesome
Do you know if you can do this with a game boy color?
AA's are great....available everywhere
Wish these were closer to my price range
Is possible the retroflag gpi case work with banana pi m2 zero?
