- 📜 History of Saladin & the 3rd Crusade: Horns of Hattin - Guy de Lusignan, King of Jerusalem. Raymond III, Count of Tripoli. And The Grandmaster of the Knights Templar. Before them, they carry the True Cross, a piece of wood from the cross Christ died on, secured in an ornate silver box. And they’re on a rescue mission to relieve the besieged city of Tiberias. But they are not allies. Until a few days ago, these men were divided over a bitter succession crisis. However now they put that aside to face a threat so great no one kingdom can face it. First time I learned about these events were from the Saladin campaign of Age of Empires 2. I was barely past counting my age in single digits, and it went a long way to stoking my interest in history. I found their telling of the story fascinating. I thought I'd mention it, since this video reminds me of them. :)
I also found Saladin because of AoE2! Honestly, that game did so much for so many people's interest in history!
I feel my interest in history and mythology comes from the many hours I have spent in reading through the resources in AOE2 and AOM during early childhood.

Saladin was a truer knight than most of the Crusaders. I was shocked to learn that as a kid reading a biography of Richard I Leoncoeur and Salah-ah Din during the Third Crusade.
One time he even sent a fresh Arabian war-trained stallion to Richard when he saw him on a sick nag before a battle.
I thought that he only sent the horse after Richard's was killed during the battle?
Can we, in the future, get some more content about areas east/northeast of iran? I'm very unfamiliar with central asian regions and what we now call afghanistan.

@@chanovia5912 Depends. Rulers were motivated by profit just as much as religious fevor, but many others seemed to have been motivated by their faith. To imply religion didn't play a part in the Crusades is pretty misleading.

@@wowyourereallyreadingthis Well, up until modern times, Antioch was considered to be in Syria. But beyond that, I'm actually surprised the Selucids never founded a city called Antioch further south. There are several Antiochs in modern-day Turkey (the famous Antioch-on-the-Orontes, as well as Antioch in Pisidia, Antioch-on-the-Maeander, and several others), so I assumed, like all the cities named Seleuceia they founded everywhere, that there would be others floating around in various places in the Middle East; but, no, all of the Antiochs somehow ended up in modern Turkey.

Just a little factoid from a local geologist: The Horns of Hattin is actually a dormant volcano. The horns themselves are the rim of the caldera, while the lower part in the middle is the caldera itself. The place is filled with volcanic rocks and basalt, and have interesting magnetic properties.

4:23 It's Baldwin IV, not VI, and skipping his reign takes out a lot of context around Saladin's story, with Baldwin IV defeating and nearly killing Saladin outright at the Battle of Montgisard.
4:43 Baldwin's designated heir, Baldwin V did not have Leprosy, that was invented by the 2005 movie Kingdom of Heaven. Sources don't explicitly say what illness Baldwin V had, only that he was a sickly child who took ill and died, which was a common fate for children at the time.

The struggle between Saladin and Richard the lioneheart for Jerusalem is truly one of the most fascinating event of the middle ages!
As a devout Catholic myself who loves to study history I really admire Saladin as a Sultan. He was a great leader who united all of the islamic nations under one banner and gave the Crusaders a nasty right hook to the face. Heck they called King Richard the Lionheart because he still faced Saladin without fear even though they all knew how much of a boss Saladin is. Yeah Saladin was a great Sultan and I respect and admire him.

I am confused how in a series that it’s named after Saladin (not Third Crusade) how you don’t have more time for his personal life. Now it’s seems like it’s Third Crusade from one perspective.
they recapped Saladin the most, while going through briefer overview for rest of the players of the third crusade. I say that justified the title.
It's the political not the personal history of Saladin, and other than his ascent to power, the bit most familiar to the West is his Jihad against the Crusades.
It's literally titled "Saladin & the 3rd Crusade", which means it's about Saladin in relation to the 3rd crusade. Not their problem you apparently can't read.
