What is Dzogchen with Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche

  • In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche briefly introduces Dzogchen, distinguishing it from two other well-known Tibetan Buddhist approaches: Mahamudra and Mahamadhyamaka. In his characteristically approachable way, Mingyur Rinpoche draws on a story of his father, Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, to help present this profound meditative system.
This teaching is an excerpt from the W Dzogchen Immersion, one of the Vajrayana Online courses: learning.tergar.org/course_li...

It’s great to see that he isn’t afraid to introduce a bit of esotericism to this channel, where most have probably been attracted by more secular use of language. Dzogchen/Mahamudra are beautiful, powerful traditions.

@@JoshuaRichardson123in addition to James Low, you might check out Lama Lena. Their styles are very different but both are direct, accessible, and have a lot of depth of experience with reputable Tibetan teachers. Having a teacher is really important in Dzogchen because the teacher points out the nature of mind to the student directly, non-conceptually. It is often recommended to try to avoid reading a lot of books about it in the beginning, as it’s easy to just layer more and more concepts instead of cutting through to direct experience.
Another option is to join Mingyur Rinpoche’s Tergar learning system. It will take a few years to meet the preliminary requirements to study Dzogchen formally through that path, but what a fruitful journey, Enjoy your explorations!

@@kubagrazel9554 Buddhism does, indeed, teach that there is no fixed, permanent unchanging soul. Hindus call this soul "Anatmata." Buddha taught the lack thereof, which he called "Anatma." It goes along with his teaching that there is not fixed, unchanging, impermanent, or eternal anywhere in the universe. Thus, he also did not believe in God as most people understand it. And, while he did not believe in Gods, he did not advocate worshiping them much, because they too are not fix, eternal, or permanent. Those kinds of views are known as "etrernalism," which is not what the Buddha taught. In that way, it is different from. any other religion that I know of, and I know about a lot of them.

@@kubagrazel9554 You are talking about 2,500 years of tradition practiced over huge stretches of Asia, many of which did not communicate with each other for centuries, and then about a century of different traditions arriving and evolving in the west, too. So yes, there will be contradictions. And, certain Buddhist schools thrive on contradiction, they think it is a way to jolt people out of ordinary thinking. But the lack of eternalist that you speak of is quite consistent in, at least, the oldest form of Buddhism, the Therevada. It is just hard to wrap your mind around until you have studied it, and, preferably, meditated on it, for a while.

cutting through or trekchö is the main point here, and it is simply done by relaxing mind and body for a second. completely. this interrupts the flow of thoughts and concepts.
it can be repeated as often as you naturally remember. but beware: it is radical and effective, like the entire dzogchen approach. better look for a teacher, to not keel over on this bumpy ride!
very well read texts from ancient traditions of all kinds you can find on samaneri jayasara´s yt channel (playlist mahamudra, dzogchen etc.).

Through dzogchen you realise the space of your awareness as well as reality. Phenomenon, simultaneously arising within the space of rigpa. Eventuality you get so good at it that this recognition is effortlessly achieved. You become the space of the internal experiencer. And you go so far into this space where you realise what the buddhas are saying. You understand theirs no difference between a buddha and a sentient. You realise the essence of where the potentiality for both buddha and sentient. You realise the nature of it very profoundly, which when you first realise it, you go into shock of anxiety but you then as an advanced trekcho practitioner, go into it again and again and you realise buddha nature and that it doesnt make a difference whether youre an ant or Samantabhadra or what. It doesnt matter. What would it matter when you see buddha nature. You see the condition for the potentiality for a buddha or a sentient, its all the same, you see where that came from. He should learn Dharma. It will liberate him from delusions and teach him not only to embrace this human life, but to be extremely grateful for it, as it is the optimal for practicing Dharma.
You sound like a loving mother and should not feel any disappointment as you have done your best. These wishes of his are outrageous, but can still become possible!
He can learn to cook Indian food today and he can learn Dharma (spiritual practice) today. There is nothing to be sad about.
He has the right circumstances and should not create this ideal or fiction story that goes like: "if I had such and such circumstances I would be such and such person". That is nonsense.
Study, practice and realize Dharma today. These fictional stories are not useful. Dharma is about change from within, and we must become skilful in turning any circumstances into fruitful one's for Dharma practice. We don't need to live in a cave in a mountain secluded from society, or live in India, etc. We have gained this optimum human rebirth. The time is now.

So the view and the meditation were fake because it was a big picture instead of a window to a mountain scene, or was your father speaking figuratively? And that is a good example of dzogchen because most of what we think is our real life life is just a fake story we make up? I'm not sure if I understand this one.

His Father was literally "cutting through" any conceptions his son had about view and meditation. That points directly to our intrinsic awareness, Buddha nature, Dharmakaya, or the various other terms used to signify that. It is pure, timeless, empty awareness, (cognition).

Dzogchen relies on the recognition of pure, timeless awareness and it is always present. His Father was literally cutting through his concepts. It is a simple, yet very profound and unique pathless path. Dzoghen means great perfection and the intrinsic awareness is actually the Dharmakaya without fabrications or elaborations.

With a thought to any of the confused responses on this post, Dzogchen is basically impossible to practice without a teacher…. We get in our own way far too easily….. when YM Rinpoche talks about Trekcho, this is the practice of cutting through our conceptual life in order to see the true nature of mind but without help this is very difficult, as we end up trying think our way round this as we would any problem solving exercise; THIS IS NOT THE POINT OF DZOGCHEN!To anyone who has interest, try to find a Dzogchen teacher to help you, there is no substitute as far as I can see!

@@highmaxdezboru82 To be clear. This was not an introduction into Dzogchen. Being introduced into Dzogchen by a master is something completely different and will only happen when the student is ready. I think your reaction was completely honest and appropriate given the nature of the speech. The level of confusion in the comments here is on a monumental level. And that is as it should be. Dzogpa Chenpo and Chagya Chenpo (Mahamudra) are the two most advanced practices of all the teachings of the Buddha. It is not something one can comprehend through analysis or thought processes. It is something that one will be introduced to after having gone through all the previous stages of purification and accumulations of the more general paths. The so called “view” is something that will reveal itself after many years of extensive practice.

@@Roldanmattei Yes I agree, it can happen. But it will most likely not happen to most people without any previous training given the long history we all have in samsara. The layers of mental habitual patterns will in most cases be to thick to be cut through in an instant like that. But nothing is impossible since we don’t know what karma we have in store for us since earlier lives.
On an ultimate level all you have said is correct, as far as I understand. In reality though it will not manifest all at once for most people even if we have been introduced to the essence (Ngotrö) by a qualified master. That’s one reason students are encouraged to engage in yidam practices although the may have had very profound experiences of the natural state in order to stabilize the realization. and that's what all this religious magic is about, that they use general terms under which you can put any meanings, metaphors, it's such a clever fairy-tale manipulation; but after all, form is emptiness, emptiness is form, brother;) everything changes and transforms all the time, it is impermanent, the meaning of this statement is that there is no view, even though it is; for Buddhists if something changes it must mean that it does not exist, that is their confusing view; with which I disagree

Also, cutting through concept is seeing that awareness itself is independent of conceptualization, so by seeing that we are not of concept, we can unlearn what we think we are and uncover the reality of our essential aware being.

What is left when we remove our names? Our history? Our beliefs, attitudes, emotions, thoughts, and identifications? You can actually do this and see what is left. It is pure awareness, or rather, that which knows experience but which is not an experience or concept itself. The television screen does not depend on the movie for it to exist.
This is the one thing that is *not* a concept. That formless reality to which the word "awareness" points cannot be reduced. Can words truly give knowledge? Can symbols perfectly grasp the reality which they represent? These are just concepts in the mind, objects in perception, so no. You said yourself, we must shed concepts to see the truth. This is the view. To connect with that which *is* fundamental to ourselves, that which is not of thought, belief, or identification. It is unconditional being, unconditional love, and it is what you are whether you see it or not.

Buddy, without existence there is no awareness. You use empty phrases like "the essence of awareness, the fundamental nature of consciousness" which explain nothing. Buddhists treat consciousness as an absolute; because without the absolute, no religion can exist, that's understandable. You write: "It is pure awareness, or rather, that knows experience ...", and therefore you yourself admit that for consciousness to exist, you need experience, and therefore existence. Besides, consciousness evolves along with spiritual development, but not in every human being. However, the cases of mentally handicapped people, people with dementia, are not so easily explained. Yes, of course, karma, but this is dogma, because religion does not exist without dogma. Buddhism does not express itself on the subject of the Creator-God, but it accepts worlds where deities live, and the world of hells, etc.
As a child, we have a different consciousness, as adults, we have a different consciousness. And unfortunately not everyone is "unconditional being, unconditional love". There are many wicked people, without empathy, selfish people without love, and they don't have inborn goodness. And no theory of awareness can explain it. There are bad people and there are good people. And it is useless for you to connect with the fundamental essence of consciousness if you are a poser, egoist, narcissist or some other kind of dick.
