That’s a lot of processing. I think the most important thing to getting good vocals is to record with compression and eq if needed. Get as close to the sound you want going in.
@seba hara That's your personal opinion. If you have to do all of that your vocal isn't recorded as well as it should of been. I was talking more so in terms of processing power. If you have to do that to every vocal your going to need a nice rig.

And anybody back then would recognize a Neptune´s tune as soon as they heard it, even if it had like only 4 tracks lol. That actually is something special in production.

Perfect preparation for the beat to come for a listener, tension created from the first bar, released into the track itself, Takes less than 30 secs to do... Effective, simple.
It's also Pharrell's tag.
Simplicity is key. Getting the right tonal balance and dynamic balance first than vocal effects after. Just mix with nothing but SSL channels, RE6 or Q10, and 1 tube or tape em and get really good than start exploring other plugins.

Thanks bro for explaining why you over boost the knobs on plugins first thing. Was curious what the approach was there because I always hear people say this.
nicodemo lalli it’s all about being able to really hear everything in that sound so you get a better understanding of what needs to be done to it. A lot of people boost the bass and treble in car systems so you want to be able to have your individual sounds as well as mix be able to translate well across different systems

It seems that by phazing or delaying the snare or claps, just milliseconds after the vocal peak works every time, but delaying kick or bassline is much more tricky

Well, I create Downtempo / Chil beat tracks including guitar. I 've been using many plugins like WLM loudness meter and have been trying to reach the goal of -14 / -13 dB LUFS standard of CZcams and always found my song lacking power and loudness when comparing to celebrities tracks. Then I decided to measure those reference tracks... To my surprice, I found that almost all known songs, even Despacito or Ed Sheeran's tracks are at around -6 LUFS !!! So what is wrong in this case? Should I follow the Loudness War and export my tracks that loud and let platforms as CZcams reduce/normalise them even 52% (Despacito: Volume / Normalized100% / 52% (content loudness 5.7dB) or follow the limit standard rules of -14 LUFS?
This is a great question, it'd be nice if someone could explain this.
Really, just do what sounds good. Mix to your tastes. Things to note, Spotify compresses the fuck out of records, it’s the reason why I use google play.
it raises the question whether labels pay to have their big hit tracks played louder on youtube than anyone else's. I cannot think of any other reasonable explanation at this point.
I think I found the answer some time ago. Limit around -0.3db, squash as much as you can without ruining the master, then lower the master Channel volume by 5ish db. This should give you around -14 lufs in perceived loudness while still retaining volume. Let me know if this helped

I have a huge problem with harshness in vocals on certain words, and i use a dynamic eq to try to get them out, but that often creates new ones and dulls the vocal. These frequencies are mostly because i work with rappers with cheap mics and untreated rooms. Any tips?

Im curious to know why every drum track is in stereo? In my experience drum tracks are typically in mono. I notice every single track seems to be in stereo. Any professional engineers got any knowledge? Thnx

I completely missed that the first time watching this video. It could be the way Pharrell sent the trackout? He said from the beginning he tries to stick to the artist's intent. I imagine if Pharrell sent him everything in stereo, he fell in love with those instruments and loops in stereo. I know many vocoders/autotune that only work in studio, but I am unsure about all. Some people like the phase you get from recording in stereo and when taking a minimalist approach (and the right acoustics and equipment) a quality recording in stereo can probably be quite nice to the right ear.
Many sessions are sent with each instrument tracked in "stereo."
However, the kicks and 808 kick is probably just a "mono" signal that was "bounced" out of a sequence program such as "Maschine" whereby it's basically the exact same information in the Left and Right sides of the waveform, meaning that if you collapsed the mix from stereo to mono, you'd hear the exact same "sound." You wouldn't hear the stereo spectrum collapse.
Because leslie has the ultimate processing power at his disposal, there's no need to split those sounds into a mono signal, but if he didn't have all of that CPU power, he'd more than likely "split" those signals down into a mono signal, using only 1 side of the original signal ( remember that would be no sound difference, except for a volume drop that can be compensated for with a volume boost), which would save on CPU processing power because you'd only need the plugins to handle a single mono signal, instead of 2 signals (left and right stereo.)
I've worked with leslie and he's always been a WAVES fan. Even when he was mixing on an SSL desk at Patchwerk Studios in Atlanta, years ago.
