  • Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a prominent Somali-born Dutch-American activist, author, and former politician. Born on November 13, 1969, in Mogadishu, Somalia, she grew up in a conservative Muslim household. Ayaan experienced firsthand the restrictive nature of Islamic traditions, including genital mutilation, and eventually sought asylum in the Netherlands in 1992.
In the Netherlands, Ayaan pursued higher education and became involved in politics. She gained international attention for her outspoken criticism of Islam, particularly its treatment of women. Ayaan worked closely with filmmaker Theo van Gogh on the short film "Submission," which criticized the treatment of women in Islamic societies. Tragically, van Gogh was murdered by an Islamic extremist in 2004, and Ayaan faced numerous threats herself.
Despite facing adversity, Ayaan continued to advocate for women's rights, secularism, and freedom of speech. She has written several influential books, including "Infidel" and "Nomad," in which she shares her personal journey and critiques of Islam. Ayaan Hirsi Ali has been associated with various think tanks and organizations dedicated to promoting human rights and countering religious extremism.
