Before his death he said that he would only let Spielberg do a movie after all the flops beforehand. Sadly it took multiple decades and Hergé never got to see this film but Spielberg went all out and created a fantastic piece of media.

Fun fact, if you didn’t already know this: the street artist painting Tintin at the start of the film is Hergé, the original artist/author of the Tintin comic. This was both an homage to a long-running in-joke (Hergé liked to draw himself into scenes as background characters) and an homage from Spielberg to Hergé himself (the two of them actually met shortly before Hergé’s death, and were fans of each other’s work. In fact, it’s likely that Spielberg was inspired by Tintin when co-creating Indiana Jones, and Hergé, who had famously nixed the idea of a Tintin film following two failed previous attempts, professed that in his opinion Spielberg was the only director who could do Tintin properly).

  • @trevoryorgesen2199
    @trevoryorgesen2199 Před 7 měsíci +30

As a kid who read every Tintin comic book multiple times, this movie excited me when I learned it was coming, and boy did it deliver. The movie mainly used three books for this story: The Crab with Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackahm's Treasure. The Crab with Golden Claws was Captain Haddock's first appearance in the series, and he was in every single one afterwards. That story was Tintin coming into contact with Opium drug traffickers, in which he was kidnapped and taken aboard the Karaboudjan, where Allan had taken control of the ship from Haddock. The Secret of the Unicorn introduced the main story we see in the movie here, and the ending of the film was based of the ending of Red Rackahm's Treasure. They actually found the ship first, and the treasure, which was Rackham's initially (although he did attack and capture the Unicorn), was found in the globe and was the only gold in the story. Thomson and Thompson have been recurring characters since the Secrets of the Pharaoh (the second book), and did in fact go after the pickpocket in The Secrets of the Unicorn.
Boy was this longer than I thought it would be, but all in all, this movie used a lot of the source material, including the sea plane hijacking. I love this movie and am hoping against all hope that the sequel is at least just as good as this one.

Spielberg should've known that ,for a Tintin movie, American audiences were going to be a tough crowd.
European comics are only starting to catch on in the US.
But it was in the French-Canadian market where they'd sell better, back in the day.
With Asterix dominating most of the Franco-Belgian market, there were French-Canadian readers as second option. For Herge, and others such Morris (Lucky Luke's author), Peyo (The smurfs), etc.

Herge wanted only Spielberg to make a live action adaptation of Tin tin once he watched the Lost Ark. But the rights were given to Spielberg by the wife of Herge after he passed away. Live action adaptation didn't get through due to multiple reasons until Jackson and Spielberg decided to make an animation versions merging multiple Herge comics.
Initially planned as one , it was decided to make a trilogy with Spielberg and Jackson directing the alternate films. Once the 2011 release happened, Edgar Wright went on to work on his third Cornetto film. Speilberg got occupied with multiple other films. Discussions for the plot kept on going until 2016 when Wright dropped out permanently due to time issue with his Baby Driver film. Speilberg kept mentioning the sequel and storylines till late 2018 with the comics to be adapted finalised. Yet the sequels never happened.
Considering this as Spielberg's one of the best films, sequels were highly anticipated. But sadly no more news regarding the same.

This reaction is about to re-ignite my Tintin phase again lmao, I remember being blown away by this in the theater and I'm still upset Peter Jackson hasn't yet followed through on his promise to direct the sequel. Apparently the agreement between him and Spielberg was that Spielberg would direct the first movie and Jackson the second. It's 2024, Peter, we're still waiting 😂
Also yes, this was mocap and shot entirely in one room, which is exceptionally impressive given the scope of certain scenes like the motorcycle chase (which was filmed in one continuous shot). The behind-the-scenes stuff about how the movie was made is really worth looking at. Spielberg had a device sort of like a video game controller with a screen on it that allowed him to see what the "set" would look like animated while they were still filming. This entire production was a technological marvel and the effort that went into making it wasn't nearly appreciated enough by the industry

I love the Tintin stories. I grew up on the cartoon and then discovered the original comic strips. Of course the animation in some parts of the strips are questionable nowadays, but the characters and the stories themselves are amazing. What I loved about this film was that as well as essentially smashing together 3 stories (then adding some of their own storytelling) there are constant references to different stories everywhere, little Easter Eggs for fans, and I don't just mean the newspaper clippings at the start of the film. One of the more hiding in plain sight ones is the statue on top of the fountain that is a Golden Crab, referencing the Crab with the Golden Claws. Love it. Oh and the cartoonist who asked if he had drawn Tintin before at the start of the film, is Herge. In all the comic strips a blond haired guy always shows up in the background somewhere, who is supposed to be Herge drawing himself.
You can tell that all those involved genuinely love Tintin.

Love for Tintin is the key ingredient to giving Tintin movies their heart, and I hope the same writers come back for the sequel. We're only missing one other big character, Professor Calculus, so I'm eager to see him join the Tintin family (and his hilarious relationship to Haddock).
As for sequels...man there's just so many good Tintin stories to choose from. The double albums Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun would be cool, and I'd love to see them eventually build to the moon adventure (imagine the animation for the rocket).

My mom used to collect all the books of the series back when she was around 13. While i'm used to collect the 90s animated series from Battery that got 1 free Video CD contain 1 or 2 part Episode. Hearing that they make a movie of Tintin makes me and my mom excited to see.
Fun fact: This movie was made because when Indiana Jones release in France, one of the critic compared the movie to Tintin series. He (Spielberg)so into the series when rad the comic that he make the movie alongside Peter Jackson (suprisingly a huge fans of the comic). Herge, the creator of Tintin would love to see Spielberg direction for Tintin, but sadly he died and never see this amazing full length adaptation after countless terrible live action movie and some of animated movie with original story.

  • @commanderkruge

I love the movie - while it doesn't stick 100% to the "original script" (it's based on two comic books from the series that tell the story of Tim meeting Haddock for the first time, the Secret of the Unicorn and the Treasure of Rackam the Red.) it stays pretty damned close in all the important bits. I would never have thought it, but the "realistic" version of Herge's more cartoonish looking characters like Alan (the guy with the long nose), Haddock, the Butler and so forth works bloody good and Tim looking like a normal human at first was a little weird, but: He actually looks a LOT like the kid who played Tim... ah, sorry, Tintin (Tim is his German name) in 2 French movies from the 60s...
And the voicework is the cherry on top. I have the feeling that a lot of love was used for this movie. :)

Tintin books have been in my house when I was growing up since before I could read and I can honestly say you can't get a better movie adaptation than this. There have been well done basic animated movies and live action adaptations done with both English and foreign languages throughout the years but I feel this particular production captures the spirit, humor and sense of adventure very accurately. It's actually a combination of different stories with a few improvised scenes that is done exceedingly well. I did watch this in the theater when it first came out but after rewatching it I am still amazed at the level of detail in the visuals and animation.

I'm Belgian and grew up on Tintin comics and animated series! I'm not as sweet on this movie but it' not because it's bad in an way, I'm just used to the original and therefore this feels a bit off. This movie is actually several of the comics mixed together! Kind of like a Tintin speedrun? Mostly it's "the secret of the unicorn" (duh, it's the title of the movie), but there's also part of "the treasure of Red Rackham" as well as "the crab with golden claws" ie "le crabe aux pinces d'or" which was the comic book/episode where he meets the Captain Haddock (although that one was about drugs and there's none of that here). There might be more but I haven't read them in a while. The artist who draws Tintin at the beginning of the movie is Hergé, the creator of Tintin! He also drew himself in each comic book, it's a fun little easter egg to find.
It doesn't look like they'll do a sequel since the movie didn't do well, but if you want to know what happens next, you should read the comics or watch the series! Some of the comic books were one shots where a story was wrapped up by the end of the book, but others like this one were part of a pair. The first was "the secret of the unicorn" and the second one was "the treasure of Red Rackham". They took from both of them for this movie so it's like a patchwork all out of order, but in "the treasure of Red Rackham" they're going at sea to find the actual treasure!
I would recommend reading/watching the comics/series in the order they came out, since more and more characters are added as the comics go on. For example, Captain Haddock only shows up in the 9th comic book, and Tintin works mostly alone before that. Some of the first comics are problematic because of some racist depictions but the following ones are nice!

Yes, the portrait artist in the first scene is a likeness of Hergé.
Unfortunately they messed up the original story by combining different book's storylines and adding new plots at the end.
Tintin meets Haddock in Crab with the Golden Claws, a drug smuggling adventure, Karaboudjan, etc.
The Secret of the Unicorn is a double story with Red Racham's Treasure, the model ships, Tintin kidnapped to Marlinspike Hall followed by treasure hunt to the island, wreck diving and meeting Calculus through his shark submarine.
They could have started with CWTGC as the first in the series, followed by the rest of the books and created a great series over the years.
Red Sea Sharks was the favourite as a kid in the '70's, but Tintin in Tibet the most beautiful and moving.
Seven Crystal Balls/Empire of the Sun also great detective adventure.
