To all the morons that are quick to judge and think I set this up or why didn’t I get scissors or why my knife sucks here are the answers.
Not sure how or why it was wrapped up? I wasn’t close to my apartment to grab anything else, I only had the small cheap knife attached to my car keys. It wasn’t my car or cover so I didn’t know how the owner would react. I live connected to a metro park so I deal with raccoons a lot. He was fine after a while and went back into the woods. Rabies are very rare in our area, I’m not saying it couldn’t happen but this raccoon DID NOT have rabies. Everything turned out great and you guys got a front row seat to an amazing rescue. I also didn’t know the dude that stepped in to actually save the raccoon at the time which made it kinda awkward because I was recording it. So chill the fuck out! Oh yeah plus I was already recording Pryor to the fact and it was filmed on my iPhone for all the ass hats that think I had some camera equipment. Dammit 🤦♂️

he likely died not long after you can tell he has neurological damage with the circling he keeps doing. being asphyxiated for that long most definitely made permanent damage and if they didnt get him to a vet he sadly and probably didnt make it
that is my experience at least with volunteering in animal saving. we have had birds going into windows and circling around on the ground afterwards or birds getting caugh with ropes/net around their body and necks and asphyxiating and we loosen them and try saving them but they still died after. they would go in circles for a while and we could not take them to a vet (because we are mostly simple volunteers and do not have any funds) and they didnt survive. my experience is mostly with cats and birds and not raccoons so i hope it went well with it and that i am wrong in his case but i have low expectations💔

Unfortunately, about 99% certain that was (or still is?) a rabid raccoon. Walking around and around in circles is a tell-tale sign of rabies.

It’s easy to judge someone when your watching a video it’s an entirely different story when you’re actually in the moment, I just feel like your fear of being bitten caused you to make bad decisions, not to mention being WAY too focused on filming it. As someone who volunteers with a wildlife rescue up in Canada, I thank you for your compassion to help this beautiful creature. I was very happy to see that you went and grabbed some gloves to protect yourself, as your safety needs to come first. Fyi, sometimes the circling is signed of distemper, I hope not for this wee guy and the area community. I loved your other video, the rescue in the dumpster of the 7-8 baby raccoons. Especially the last one who looked so exhausted and couldn't get out without your help. Thank you!
It was probably brain damage and it was disoriented from being choked for so long it’s what you see in impalas or other herbivores if they escape a choke hold from lions etc.

@@Para.site_, I'm so sorry to hear that. It must have been very upsetting for you. Raccoons are very clever and curious animals and keeping them out of enclosures, or in our case in enclosures is very tricky. A double locking system, like the addition of a carabineer used in rock climbing, we've found to be useful. Also having a roof that they can't lift off is very important as they can climb anything. Best of luck.

I worked as a vet assistant as well as for wildlife rescue. To everyone claiming to know the Raccoon suffered brain damage - during the few minutes the raccoon was taped after being freed there wasn't enough time to remotely recover. This animal just went through a period of restricted breathing and was exposed to immense stress. It's a wild animal with escape reflex, it doesn't lay down to relax and catch some air as a human would do. As soon a wild animal is back on its feet it has the instinct to move on. So it's very possible the raccoon really just still felt dizzy and disoriented. Before brain damage occurs usually all mammals fall unconscious. Not always, but in most cases. Also the video doesn't tell if the raccoon was unconscious at any point before they discovered it. Brain damage can only be diagnosed if the state of going in circles doesn't pass for hours, this video shows solely a FEW MINUTES after. Give it time.
Just read a lot of comments of people who say "I'm not a vet, but know for sure it suffered brain damage."
You CAN'T KNOW after watching this video. I'm working in the field and am very experienced and can't make a diagnosis by what I see.
So please don't make your unqualified assumptions a fact.

He was walking around in circles due to lack of oxygen in his brain from hanging so long. Always give water with food. He would have been disoriented for awhile anyway.

He doesn’t have rabies, it’s just low oxygen to his brain so he’s confused and his motor abilities are messed up because of that too depending on how long it’s been there.

We need more people whonare as compassionate as you! If you had lifted the him and the tarp into the air it would have twisted around easily and he would have been freed quickly. He looks like he has a neurological issue since he was spinning. Should have called wild rescue becaused he may be confused and walk right into traffic or something. They can give medical care and rehabilitate. But you are awesome to have rescued and freed him. You rock! ❤️
It was the weekend, he recovered and went into the woods. I live directly behind a metro park. They only come up to our parking lot to get in the dumpsters for food.

The turning could be a sign of either trauma or brain damage, idk but that’s the most logical explanation to me
Bernardo Garcia the raccoon probably does have brain damage from not getting much oxygen, something like that.
Bernardo Garcia could’ve just been dizziness. You lose your balance when blood isn’t distributed correctly around the brain. Hopefully she was only dizzy :(

It's not brain damage if the left side doesn't work properly it just doesn't like in a stroke, you loose control of the side of the body completely not partially, only with treatment in humans can recover some movement but not all
