It truly was a once in a lifetime experience. We both have lived near lakes our whole lives and never saw a bird of any kind stuck like this. We did go back to where we took him a few hours layer and he was up in the nest with Mom and Dad 🦅 close by. In the fall they all migrated south.

One of the more important come backs of a species in my life time. As a child in the 60’s, you only saw eagles in captivity. Wild eagles were nearly extinct. But now, you can see them almost everywhere and they’ve become a back yard site for many Americans. We live near a little lake and we have one. When we lived in DC in the loop, surrounded by urban sprawl, we had a nesting pair in the woods near our house. Truly remarkable and a sign that mankind can make positive changes to our world.

In situations where they'd most likely die, birds and some other animals too might voluntarily take the risk of turning to humans, knowing how they are resourceful, yet still aware it's a lottery with their life basically. As if they understand that 40% survival chance is a lot better than 5%.

People in the comments need to shut up lol, why would they take it to a wildlife rehabilitator?? The bird was okay. Birds of prey are very highly strung, its best to avoid taking them into captivity unless absolutely necessary. Once he's dried off and rested, he will be fine again.
Sometimes it's best to just leave wildlife alone. These people did the right thing. I've volunteered in a wildlife hospital for a long time now, and I'm generally very knowledgeable about birds. This bird is not sick, its not injured. Most likely he just crash landed. He's a baby: he's still learning how to fly and fish properly. Hopefully this will be a valuable lesson to the poor thing.
