This is an excerpt from an interview, conducted by Jana Lynne White, for MuchMusic. I extracted this footage from a DVD, interspersed with live footage, hence, the abrupt applause, from the audience, at certain cut points.
The text, at the beginning of the video, says that this was recorded in Vancouver on November 16th, 1994, but I believe that date and location are incorrect. I am pretty sure that this was actually recorded in Toronto on October 28th, 1994.
I base this off the fact that Jana Lynne White worked out of Toronto, and Jeff's hair and outfit match footage from another television segment hosted by the same interviewer, on that day.
Additionally, Jeff was interviewed by Terry David Mulligan, in Vancouver (for MuchMusic's west coast affiliate, MuchWest), on the former date, and his hair and outfit were different from what is depicted in this footage.
This video was published on the 24th anniversary of Jeff's passing. God bless you, Jeff, wherever you are. You are deeply loved and missed.

mostly people with a knack for art, or creative people tend to think this way. like a lover not a fighter. and he was extremely in tune how to express his emotions, and to people like him (true artists by my standards) material world means nothing.they do everything they can to either escape it, or try to change it for the better. i think that is why so many of them go away early. they do not mind going that much.

I agree. I think some people might think when they watch him for the first time and get this first glance that he might comes off as a little pretentious but in my opinion he just speaks so bluntly from the heart that its very hard at first to get used to that. Thats it. Its just very rare to hear an artist as talented as him not talk in a very overly complicated way. It doesn't really matter if you know allot about music or not, the way he describes everything about his view on life, its very easy to understand when you have enough empathy and are at peace with yourself.

When he was telling the interviewer how ugly he felt he was being sincere. Not playing coy. She responded back in a sorta...sarcastic way. Telling him he's wrong. But in a way that was sorta implying manipulation, but in a harmless way. She was just trying to say he's crazy to think of himself like that. She should have just told him instead "you're beautiful." That's what she meant. It's hard to know how to be around someone like Jeff until you get to know them. Especially in a setting like this. He's so genuine. Pay attention to his facial expressions specifically during that exchange. He looked like a little boy when he looked up and confided in her about his appearance. She retorts, telling him he nuts and (playfully) implying it must be an act. He breaks eye contact at the exact moment he understands she's saying it's a put on and looks at himself through the camera again. And keeps eye contact with himself while he goes more in depth about the things he thinks make him ugly specifically. It was hard to watch him being so harsh about himself. It made me sad.
He's so physically expressive. I see people like that sometimes who communicate with their whole being. You just want to be near them. They are rare but Jeff definitely was that way.

This is the same interviewer who, prior to interviewing Fugazi, butchered the song lyric that largely typified their entire stance on being a band. It was so ridiculous that the band even included the excerpt in their documentary years later (czcams.com/video/Xt-H-ZnsJ4g/video.html).
With that said, I wouldn't expect much out of her when it pertains to giving a toss about who she's interviewing.

@Wolfgang he would be an introvert with extroverted tendencies, he was still remarkably hidden to the world, the Jeff we all saw was the one that he wanted to project, it was not his depths or his true fundamental beliefs, Elizabeth Frazer pointed out in an interview about him that even to her, he was still very guarded and she never learned the depths of him even after being in an emotionally intimate romantic relationship with him. Thats what makes introversion so hard to detect most times, because it can look exactly like extroversion, but the truth of it is that the person at the center will never reveal themselves wholly to another person, only the illusion of doing so for the sake of emotional intimacy.

@eggyeox I can’t say that I agree with Jeff’s philosophical ideas, as much of what he espoused here sounds New Age.
Have you read any of C.S. Lewis’ works? If not, I would highly recommend his Signature Classics anthology (8 volumes). It includes:
      Mere Christianity
      The Screwtape Letters
      The Great Divorce
      The Problem of Pain

@@MojoPin1983 That’s fair, I wouldn’t call myself either new age or religious, but I support beliefs, whether spiritual or theological, that bring people personal comfort and understanding, without hurting anyone. Mine aren’t fixed anywhere, but have roots in Taoist philosophies, which I think is why his comments about the flow of life and accordance with nature spoke to me.
From what I got of this interview, and I could be wrong I’m still learning about him, it seemed more like he was abstractly theorizing about the things he didn’t understand? Without any really concrete beliefs? I think what resonated with me the most was when he said afterwards, “But I do believe in people, I believe in their divinity, and I believe in the divinity of nature”, etc.
Of course, philosophy, religion, belief, can be very subjective and personal.
While looking briefly into C.S. Lewis, I can’t say my personal beliefs mirror those of Christianity so I’m not sure how well I’ll resonate with his work, but I’m always open to learning different perspectives, so thank you for the recommendations, I’ll check them out when I can :)

@@KrabMuffin98 With respect, I don’t know where you’re getting that idea from. The latter seems blatantly obvious, from my experience. Most young people are historically and politically uniformed. They are indoctrinated in school and lack critical thinking skills. They aren’t inclusive toward those of a socially conservative point of view, nor those of a contrary disposition (labeling those they disagree with: bigots, homophobes, racists, etc). Lastly, *social* justice isn’t real justice.

@@MojoPin1983 sorry to burst your bubble, but all generations have been "indoctrinated" in school. At least in the US, it has been proven that history classes are incredibly whitewashed, glorifying colonialism and leaving out major pieces of history. Young people have to do their own research because public schooling doesn't provide students with all the information. It can be difficult to be inclusive of socially conservative individuals when a good majority of them hold beliefs that oppose the rights of POC, gay people, trans people, mothers, teachers, etc. Social justice is real justice because real people are being discriminated against. And this doesn't just apply to the US. All humans deserve to have basic rights and that's all that social justice means. I was just trying to stick up for the younger generations, but I can see my comment REALLY fired you up lol. I wasn't going to go into great detail but you asked for it lol. @@KrabMuffin98 "Sorry to burst your bubble, but all generations have been "indoctrinated" in school. At least in the US, it has been proven that history classes are incredibly whitewashed, glorifying colonialism and leaving out major pieces of history."
Colonialism might have been tinged with some unfortunate acts and events, however, what society isn't a product of expropriating the possessions and land of others? The various North American tribes displaced each other. History is replete with this. Let's not downplay the good that has resulted from colonialism, though. You live in arguably the greatest country in the history of the world.
"Young people have to do their own research because public schooling doesn't provide students with all the information."
How many people go out of their way to research history, politics; especially young people? I would wager that most young Americans couldn't even name their respective State's governor, or their city's mayor.
"It can be difficult to be inclusive of socially conservative individuals when a good majority of them hold beliefs that oppose the rights of POC, gay people, trans people, mothers, teachers, etc."
That isn't even true. First, many social conservatives *are* black (Candace Owens, Larry Elder, for example). WIth respect to the other groups that you mentioned, no social conservative thinks that those people should be denied basic human rights. If you're referring to marriage of same-sex individuals, for example, that isn't a human rights issue; it's a *civil* rights issue.
What rights are social conservatives withholding from trans people?
Many mothers and teachers are also social conservatives, so I have no idea what you are referring to.
"Social justice is real justice because real people are being discriminated against."
Give me some specific examples. What law(s) discriminate against said groups?
"All humans deserve to have basic rights and that's all that social justice means."
Said groups already have basic human rights, in Western nations. 'Justice' and 'social justice' are not interchangeable terms.
"I was just trying to stick up for the younger generations, but I can see my comment REALLY fired you up lol. I wasn't going to go into great detail but you asked for it lol. It's also just funny because I'm sure Jeff Buckley was left-leaning."
I'm not fired up; I'm perfectly calm. I just thought that your post warranted a challenge.
What do Jeff's political leanings have to do with anything? That's a non sequitur. I can respect Jeff as a person and musician without sharing the same political views. Also, radical leftism wasn't mainstream in Jeff's time. There were plenty of reasonable, open-minded liberals, while he was alive, but those are very scarce in today's 'us vs them' paradigm. It's possible that Jeff would have disassociated himself from the radical left.
It's not surprising that Jeff would be left leaning, though. He grew up in the most left wing state (California), and moved to arguably the most liberal city on the planet (New York), where he was surrounded by an echo chamber, filled with people who probably held the same views with respect to key issues, thereby reinforcing each other's biases. He was probably never exposed to genuine conservatism, and might have judged it through the lens of his peers.

People like him are easily misinterpreted, and its easy to see why, it can come across as disingenuous when the only interaction you've had with that kind of thought is from manipulative people(for a while that was the norm for this type of thinking). But when you do meet someone like him who genuinely believes what he's saying and is trying to show true honesty, the indicator if they're being real or not is just to truly listen to what they're saying, and break it down, piece by piece it will unravel and show that yeah, this guy genuinely has thought through each of the words he chose and he genuinely does think this shit, he isnt just using buzzwords to sound deep or cool, I've met both kinds of people and the first encounter you have with both types, the real and the fake, they're hard to tell apart, but its really the small little subtleties that you pick up on after being around them for a while that reveal which type they are. If they're lying or if they're genuinely and desperately trying to communicate. Anyways, I obv never knew the guy personally but from this interview I get the impression that he is genuine, despite the interviewer not believing him at first, which I can totally understand why, but I still do disagree.

I see what you’re saying. But even when I go through that process of active listening, Im genuinely still left with doubts about him. The part that caught me off guard the most was when he said “I don’t feign anything”, which seems like something no honest person would say about themselves. Everyone acts fake in some instances, and ironically, the most authentic thing to say is to admit to those moments where we lack authenticity, since they in themselves reflect a fundamentally human trait (imperfection). No one is constantly expressing their genuine selves at every moment, so that statement put me off a bit.
I’m generally sceptical of a supposedly authentic person whose personality seems overly aesthetic and pleasing. Authenticity necessarily comes at the price of not only showing the best parts of yourself but also the ugliest parts. It’s the open expression of those parts of a person which reflect badly on them and the recognition of those ugly parts which best indicates whether someone is authentic imo. It demonstrates that they’re a human, not an art piece or a projection of some archetype of artistry.
