Confirmation of using Nintendo Account for next-gen system, is not confirmation nor denial of backwards compatibility.
people just dont get that, backwards compatibility isn't a function of an account, but of hardware and feasibility.
if its true that the next chip is a tegra again, it's looking very feasible that it would be compatible. but it still doesnt need to. worst case, the new tegra is too different from the old to play the old titles well with partial emulation. it might not be powerful enough to downright emulate the switch (or it would be too much work to do it while fixing the various random issues that come from emulating complicated hardware) and at that point, the only solution would be putting in a whole extra cpu. which also needs cooling so that becomes more complicated and all of that costs money.
and nintendo cant make the switch 2 too expensive. or people wont buy it. because nintendo isn't meant to be that expensive.
@clydefrosch people also don't know that backwards compatability means that switch 2 would use switch cartridges not that it the switch 2 would be able to play switch games
I feel like the controversy would be so tremendous if Nintendo was saying all this stuff and then finally unveiling it as not backwards compatible.
But it’s also such a Nintendo thing to do lmao.
I am personally ready for it to be backwards compatible but in a way that’s really annoying like the whole switch library will run on the switch 2, but you need to buy the switch 2 version of every single game.
@@clydefroschor just make it work without emulation Sony does this with ps4 games
Unless they plan on making only digital downloads compatible. But if they are using the same cartridge as the Switch I couldn't see why they wouldn't include backwards compatibility. And even if they don't include backwards compatibility then it's not such a big deal. It's not like our Switch will just magically disappear when we buy a new console.
i love how wood ended up getting a new microphone cover
Happy to hear that Woods negativity of Mario Wonder came around. Ironic how playing the game casually with friends allowed him to fully enjoy it compared to speed running it to end it.
Woods talking about wrestling is always entertaining, especially as Bob just sitting there nodding his head understanding less than half of what Wood is talking about. I hope Wood does it more often lol
Mario Wonder's online is pretty fun. Going through the level with random people going along with you in their own game makes it feel like we're all playing, enjoying, and having fun together.
Also, the game *does* have pretty hard stuff. Mostly if you try to 100% it though, otherwise the difficulty is alright.
Agreed, I love that if I just want to breeze through and see what the next world is I can, but if I want a challenge I can stop and try to get all of the wonder seeds in a 4 or 5 star level, I think it’s very well balanced in that way
It was funny noticing Wood's new microphone cover as a result of the previous podcast where they mentioned the cat hair.
Wood just described literally any teleprompter :)
I am a big fan of you guys, and love most everything each of you does individually as well as together. I have listened to every one of the Nontendo podcasts, and I listen mostly on the Podcast app, but I felt like it needs to be commented on...Woods mic has some weird echo...all the time. Please look into this as it is quite distracting. It will also help your show feel more like a show that has been around for 75 episodes, and less like a show that has only a handful of episodes under its belts. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to you reaching show 750.
57:50 - I have three Switches in the house (My OLED, my wife's Lite and the original for the kids). We ran into issues sharing games in the family group the moment I bought my wife her Lite, but I worked around it (mainly just buying my wife a physical copy of Animal Crossing). I later bought myself an OLED, and moved the original to the kid's tv and instantly ran into problems. This is what I found after digging online a bit:
1. A Nintendo account can always play their owned games, regardless of where it's installed (exception, see 3.)
2. Any Nintendo account on a Switch can play games installed on it, as long as the game owner's Nintendo account has set that console set as their "Primary" console.
3. However, if a Nintendo account plays a digital game they own on *the console they have set as their PRIMARY console*, they lock out all digital games in their digital library for *all* secondary consoles (including their own account on secondary consoles). This does not occur if a Nintendo account plays a game they own on their secondary console.
4. A single digital game purchase can be played on 2 consoles simultaneously, as long as the game owner plays on their secondary Switch console.
5. Secondary Consoles need access to the internet to play digital games, even with the account holder.
My set up (primary and secondary console reference *my* Nintendo account):
* 4 Nintendo Accounts: (1)ME, (2)WIFE, (3)KID1, (4)KID2. "(1)ME" has a "Nintendo Switch Online Family Subscription" and the primary account in our "Nintendo Online Family Group". All digital games are puchased on (1)ME Nintendo account.
* (2)WIFE, (3)KID1, and (4)KID2 are added to Family Group, getting access to Online and my purchased games.
(PRIMARY CONSOLE) Original Switch : Accounts: (1)ME, (2)WIFE, (3)KID1, (4)KID2
--The digital games they play are installed using my account; Kid's use their Nintendo accounts to play. The kids can play any of the digital games on my account, and not lock out me or my wife from my library.
(SECONDARY) My OLED Switch : Accounts: (1)ME
--I have my digital games installed here. I play on this one. When I play my digital games here, it doesn't lock out the games on the Primary (Original) Switch.
(SECONDARY) Wife's Switch LITE : Accounts: (1)ME, (2)WIFE
--Her account and my account. I bought it for her to play Animal Crossing (and keep the peace) after my daughter continually clear cut all the trees and grabbed everything before she could during the day. She can play any of the digital games from my account, and it doesn't lock out the games.
I understand why it is done this way. It ensures that a game isn't shared endlessly, but family groups are capped at 6 accounts. There are probably ways to simplify the system. The main issue is the internet connectivity on secondary consoles, even when the owner account is used. I get this, as it prevents the account from being installed on tons of Switches and being played regardless. It's not too bad for me, as I just sync my switch with my phone when I'm out. The check doesn't use a lot of data.
However, Nintendo needs to make things clearer on their site. Unless they've changed it recently, there aren't instructions on how it all works. It's spread out on several pages, including several FAQ pages.
Interesting seeing how exactly it works! It’s something that worries me slightly when I’ll inevitably have to transfer my user. I have a question. If I transfer USER 1 (my main account) to a new switch what would happen to games I purchased digitally on USER 2? Can I transfer both users to ensure my games are playable?
@@avacooke47 Nothing happens to the games you've purchased, they remain in the library of the purchasing account. The built-in account transfer copies the account from switch 1 to switch 2, with the option to remove the account from switch 1. If you remove the account, the games from that accounts library are uninstalled from that switch. Both users can be on both switches, and the games don't uninstall if you don't remove the account from the switch.
The best way to handle two accounts on two switches (like in the case of a couple who each buy games and have their own switches) is to add both users to both switches and assign the primary console to the others switch.
So USER1's primary console would be USER2's switch (and visa versa). That way when USER1 plays a game they purchased on Switch1, it doesn't lock out USER1's library for USER2 on Switch2.
Only caught the live for like the last 30 minutes but great podcast as always
Ummm, I take my switch lite on the go all the time (it’s my primary) and my OLED stays home. I’ll admit making sure the saves are current on the lite is a little jank, but it works. You just have to make sure the lite was the last to access a game before you leave the house.
I take my home switch with me everywhere. I have a Tomtoc case and just grab my switch off the dock and go. Love being able to take my switch everywhere
They are just having their first world problem of asking for a feature that defeats the point of the Switch's existence.
14:50 that really is 1 of the best wrestling related commercials ever 😂 Sting was making sure that kid sold that beating 🤣
i like the red mic cover so we dont see the cat hair! LOL 🤣
You can make the Switch you take out with you the main device so you don’t have to do the internet check. Additionally you just have to close the game on the home Switch and by the time you pick up the Not At Home Switch your cloud save is already downloaded as long as your switch is is on.
Im so but hurt that the podcast is ending but I also want to respect Wulfs decision usually I'm fine when something end or someone leaves but this one really hit me hard. I hope they realize we keep coming back for them like you guys could have just changed it to a digital only podcast and I think most people would have agreed with me that we wouldn't have mind as long as it didn't end.
Wood talks about taking a bump, Bob thinks he means coke, Wood then rubs his nose. LOL
Someday we’ll get to half an hour mark and Woods would still forget to play the intro video.
59:00 Why not have a 2nd Switch on the account that can access all the same games (for family games)?
I'm surprised when you talked about the Animal Crossing saves, you didn't mention that only the main profile can fully play the game. Other profiles are just guests on the main's island, can't build anything, can't upgrade their house, nothing. It's so unnecessarily limiting... I would've actually loved a full save file system tied to the profiles, I think it's an elegant and easy solution. My bf (who doesn't have my switch) has a profile just because he wanted to play TOTK. He just selects his profile and gets 100% the same experience as me. Oh and I think there's an option when you create a profile to not link it to an account? I didn't need one for Zelda
I do have to laugh because I suck at platformers (hence not a big Mario fan) so whenever they talk about how easy of a game these are I just shake my head. I realize this is a me thing because compared to dark souls these are simple but been gaming all my life and still have never beaten a Mario game.
Mario Odyssey has assist mode. There's hope for you.
Damn never even beaten one? I’d understand not completing one since most people I assume aren’t completionists like me haha but still I think you should def give them a shot again
@@derekwhite4312 oh I definitely have played most of them (spent years on the original and 3) got pretty far on bowsers furry and new super Mario (on switch). But yeah I have never beaten a platforming Mario (beaten paper but that’s not the same). I have beaten so kirbies but other than that just not good at platforming. I have beaten other games like metroids and Zelda (but game does grind to a halt any platforming section)
I don’t have either of my switches hooked up to the internet, and do not have a Nintendo account. Does Mario Wonder require internet or an account in order to play?
Pokemon tcg doesn't need to come out after the game is released. They can use Pokemon tcg to tease next gen Pokemon while they work on their game, so that they can delay the game. They don't need to release new games every year. They can skip a year if they need the extra time and still keep their November release date. If it means the game has a full story and all bugs are ironed out sales will go up.
The talking flowers in Wonder crack me up. The voice acting is so over the top
Love the fact that Wulf talked about how the Pokemon Company can't ride on the back of the original 151, when just weeks ago they put out a massively successful TCG set literally called Pokemon 151
Pokemon tcg needs to be excluded from Pokemon tcg since the tcg really doesn't need to rely on the newest game.
@@Staratopia Not at all, there's always a lot of hype and excitement when the TCG moves onto the next generation. They need new Pokemon too, they just have the privilege of being able to reissue old ones more effectively.
@@Project_Worm the tcg will sell cards regardless of when the game comes out. That's what I mean by it doesn't rely on the newest game. The tcg takes inspiration from all forms of Pokemon. They could delay the next video game, and the tcg can come out with a new set of cards with last Gen Pokemon but with artwork inspired by fan creations and still sell well. The anime can't say the same because it does rely on the games. It would have to take a hiatus or make extra filler episodes to survive the delay.
@@Staratopia And plushes will keep being bought and the anime will still get views. But the games, when they launch a new generation give every other part of the franchise a boost TCG included.
@@Project_Worm I'm just saying there's no need to rush the production of the game. That taking an extra year won't cause sales to suffer or stop new expansions from being released. Of course next gen help boost sales, but it doesn't need to be rushed. A more fleshed out game would be better
Great show 😊
I discovered woods channel back in 2020 when i got covid for the first time. I watched so much of his content because I was sick and had nothing to do. After I got better I kept up with him and his content. I started listening to the podcast around episode 50
Then I discovered Bob's channel and like that one just as much
Thank you for making such cool content
Bro said he didnt want to put Mario Wonder in the title again so they put the Switch 2 in the title for the 10th time 😭
There are some 2D Mario's that sell more than 3D.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold WAY more than Galaxy, while New Super Mario Bros 2. sold a bit more above Super Mario 3D Land.
I guess the bigger the casual audience the more the 2D sells, since the Wii U actually had 3D World beat out Mario U
The final final stage is the only hard stage and it is still beatable in 1 sitting but it's definitely difficult
I didn't buy Bayonetta 3 for this reason. I love Bayo but I don't want to play it in a nerfed state. It's about how do games transfer to the next Switch. And is it worth getting the next one?
The way I'd like Nintendo to do the game purchases is: The games that are bought in the console can be played by anyone in the console, regardless of account. And the games that are bought with one account can be played by that account in any console. So, the games would have like a console and account ownership. This would obviously apply only to the digital games. There are a few things that should be worked on, but that's basically it.
59:50
I thought it was documented to work this way on Nintendo Life? Did Nintendo change how this works?
You guys give me a headache sometimes talking about Switch profiles. I know it's confusing, but I literally learned about how they work by watching Wulff's videos.
On your Primary Switch you can play any game and DLC without Internet. All of the other profiles can also play your digital content (I believe with an Internet connection).
On a secondary Switch your profile can play any digital games that profile has purchased (as long as there is an Internet connection to start the game). No other profiles on that Switch will be able to play your digital content. All physical content without paid DLC is playable regardless of the status of Internet connection or primary Switch.
If you want a mobile experience that's pretty handsoff you need to make your Lite your primary and your docked Switch your secondary, but then extra profiles won't be able to play digital content and you might have problems with cloud saves if you don't connect the Lite to the Internet with enough time after your last play session.
The whole using a foreign account to buy games doesn't work very well if you don't stick to one Switch or make that account's Primary also your Switch Lite (or other mobile Primary Switch).
Having two Switches, one for Home and one for Mobile, works fine, not great but fine for either A) an all Physical Library of games (or at least for games multiple people in the household will play) or B) only one user in the household
Fully disagree about the 3D vs. 2D. 2D Mario has always sold better than 3D Mario. NSMB (series) kinda proved that vs. like all 3D Marios. Odyssey is more an exception, but also in the same boat as Wonder. Where they did some drastic changes from the (most recent) previous installments in that (dimension, since 2D is different than 3D).
That's in relation to Odyssey vs. Galaxy 1 & 2 (as 3D Land/World/Bowser's Fury are their own separate thing), and Wonder vs. NSMB U.
Congrats for getting married Wolff and wood!!!
They finally married each other? Awww!❤
“You’re not welcome to be here” I love it! It’s a dare in a way like “don’t push the big red button” it’s fun! - PR student here 🤗
i play a lot of pokémon and do a lot of pokémon challenge runs, pokemon has the same one save per account. it does not take to long ti make a new user on the switch, and takes 10 min to link it to a nintendo account
Not including ports and remakes, Four Swords Adventures was the last 2D/Top Down Zelda on a home console...
...in 2004.
Link's Awakening Switch was 2019, and (to be fair) that was a proper full from the ground up remake, not just a port or a remaster. It kinda felt like a new game.
But the last actually new 2D/Top Down Zelda games were A Link Between Worlds in 2013 and the multiplayer sequel Tri Force Heroes in 2015, both on 3DS.
We need the TLoZ to be remade full from the ground up like LASwitch, but NOT in the LASwitch art style.
The toy look works so well for LA because (spoiler alert for a 1993 game) the whole thing is a dream.
But for TLoZ, I want closer to ALBW art style, but on Switch, so HD.
We also need TAoL to be remade full from the ground up like LASwitch, but again, NOT in the LASwtich art style.
HOWEVER! parts of LA are sidescroll/Metroidvania-esque... just like all of TAoL (the overworld is top down, but ALL combat is sidescroll/Metroidvania)!
So the team that worked on LASwitch needs to just take that same sidescroll stuff they did with LASwitch, and apply that to a full remake of TAoL.
I'm so confused, I get the Switch requiring internet when not on the primary Switch for digital games, but why do physical games require an internet connection? It's not like you're somehow using the cartridge in two Switchs at once
speaking of E going to the When We Were Young Festival, Wood looks a lot like Kurt Cobain & Adam Lazzara of Taking Back Sunday's lovechild
A Link Between Worlds is almost exactly 10 years old actually.
Pokemon anime for new regions has always aired in Japan almost immediately after the new games are released. It just doesn't feel that way because until Gen 6 the games came out in Japan months to a year ahead of the rest of the world. To this day the anime outside of Japan is around a year behind the Japanese release.
i like when wood talks about wrestling
I'm so mad I forgot about this for one week
Bro I didn’t know about the animal crossing save app bullshit and I got the Mario oled switc h and sold my old switch so now my town is gone, good thing I uploaded a town tour on my CZcams channel a while back, so I still have the memory
I have always hated the one-save-per-account bullshit games try to do. It's always bad.
This annoys me SO MUCH with Metal gear solid 5 and animal crossing.
My first Nintendo experience was Super Mario Bros / Duck Hunt in 1986 (I was 6) and I remember all the original Mario releases. I feel comfortable saying Mario Wonder is the best 2d Mario to date. As much as I love 3 and World all time, all things considered Mario Wonder is the better Mario game at this point. Furthermore, Odyssey isn't safe either.
I didn’t used to care about backwards compatibility until I realised I play some games in perpetuity like Zelda and snowrunner. I want to continue to play these games on a new system but not lose my progress
Accidentally? Me and my siblings with purposely throw each other in lava
Hey Bob and Wood, I love both of your channels and I’ve been a fan for a while. I don’t understand the argument of wanting to have a switch OLED at home and have a switch. Let you take on the road. The point of the switch is so then you can dock it, and when you have to go, you can take it with you to catch a train or travel. That’s essentially what I use it for and I don’t ever see myself grabbing a second one if I was able to play on that and on my switch OLED if my switch OLED is also portable. I understand you guys having multiple switches but I don’t see that making sense for the average consumer.
Until mine got drift, my Switch Lite was my favorite handheld device so I can see an argument for having one for undocked play and then a regular Switch for docked play, but I don't see any reason to get an OLED in that situation.
Nintendo's aim should be to make the whole save file, primary/secondary switch stuff so simple, that, if someone talks about it in a podcast, you DON'T completely tune out because you don't understand anything.
Wood and Wullf really confused themselves in this episode and said some wrong and contradictory things about the profiles. I know at least Wullf knows how it actually works if he stopped and thought about it. I learned about it originally from his videos around the time of the Lite's release.
Xbox did do that to Rare when they bought them. Articles with interviews with ex Rare devs conplaining came out in the mid 2000s.
Online features and accounts are all confusing and overly complicated. I never go out of state, so when I actually went on a flight out of state, I was excited to play my switch in the airport. BUT NOPE. I swear I made my OLED my primary switch but I couldn’t play my digital version of StarDew valley on my OLED because I needed internet connection. It was so frustrating.
And with Xbox, I gave my fiancé my series S to play COD after I got a series X. She can login under a new account on my Xbox and all my games I purchased are still there on the Xbox. But to play them, she needs to re-purchase the games. So she just stays on my account and plays COD. But that means we can’t play on the series X and S at the same time.
Then when animal crossing came out, I bought her a switch lite so she can play. And I thought okay, I’ll log my account on her switch lite because I already bought animal crossing. But it didn’t work, i dont think both us were able to play at the same time under the same account on separate switches. So I had to buy animal crossing a second time for her to play on my account on a different switch.
It’s just all so weird snd frustrating.
I'm betting you bought Stardew with a different account and that other account's Primary was still your other Switch.
Pokemon is excluded from that crunch delay philosophy😂
assuming theres no way to disable them sayin wowwy zowwy?...
It's wild that DOug is claiming the new account system makes anything easier now, you still had to be connected online for every other account system they've had there's literally nothing that forced them to ditch every other account system they've made, just like there's literally nothing making them keep this one around, it means less than nothing that they made the account system XD
Y'all doing good 👍
The Xbox way is the best way to manage accounts but I don't know how you would do that without always being online
How games work on the switch:
Physical cartridges are the master file so that can go from switch to switch without online.
Digital games can be played offline as long as that is the switch that first purchased and downloaded the game.
The account that paid for the digital game can download and play the game on any switch, but you need to be online for that. This is an anti-theft mechanism.
It has nothing to do with which Switch bought the game and completely with which profile bought the game. If a profile bought a game on their secondary Switch, all users on the Primary can still play that digital game once it's downloaded. If you switch your primary Switch, the digital content ownership moves with the profile that paid for it and all profiles on the new Primary Switch will then be able to play the digital games as well.
I wonder if employees can be made to sign like an NDA where they can’t talk about working conditions or anything outside of the company? Again, you don’t hear anything good or bad. Would that even be possible?
When are we getting another in-person episode?
Thousand year door is my most anticipated for 2024, Switch 2 or not.
Thanks! Kimitachi wa orokada, moshi kore o yondara, watashi wa ōkina odoroki ga hoshī.
Thanks for the Super Chat
I don’t know why either of you thought b-lining to the end of the game would be the way to go, even in a streaming context. Where’s the “wonder” in that? You need to stop and smell the flowers! SMBW is a game that’s really great for appreciating the little things.
they'll likely save the official switch 2 announcement for early 2024... that way nintendo can capitalize on one last holiday season of killer switch hardware and software sales before the transition to the new hardware begins in mid 2024?. nintendo tends to end support of its legacy hardware fairly quickly so i expect switch software support to end by mid 2025 or so.
I was thinking April may be the announcement since that's when they're ending online communication for the Wii u and 3ds family systems
I have a switch and a switch lite and it is super annoying. My main is the lite and anytime I let my daughter play Pokemon snap. If I am playing a game I have to take the lite off sleep(I am usually never turning off the game I am playing) and have to turn off WiFi. So that it doesn't kick her out of the game if I so much as plug it in. It is so annoying and it doesn't matter if I am playing the same game, a cartridge or completely different game. As my daughter has gotten more into games, I have been pushed away from Nintendo. I now find myself buying games that would be nice to have on the more portable system through steam to have on the steam deck.
LOL, I dont know that i believe Wood's review here. I watched his live stream of this and my husband walked in while i was watching and said "why are you watching some guy rage hating on mario" LOL. He was just so done by the end of that game. hahahaha.
I can't believe I never mentioned how much I hate that the thumbnail of the "switch 2" has d-pads on both joycons.......it would be less annoying if it was just the picture of the regular switch. Lol
Nintendo did the same "1 system per user" crap with the 3ds. Sony VITA didn't do that. I had 2, and I would rotate them to take to work, no problem. Nintendo's all about supposedly preventing piracy, but actually hurting their own console sales and making things more annoying for legit users.
You don't DO this crap if you bring out multiple models of a portable. "Sorry, you can only have 1"
I really dont get the struggle to have 2 switch? I have a lite and an OLED and I have no problem using my saves for BOTW. Im I missing something ?
look at the numbers on the New Super Mario Bro games
I constantly forget that Nintendo and Pokémon are separate. I always assumed Nintendo owns Pokémon or something but I know that’s wrong.
Nintendo, Games Freak, Creatures all own around 32% each of the Pokemon franchise. Plus importantly Nintendo has the sole rights and trademarks for every Pokemon game past present and future....
So even if Games Freak and Creatures merged with a majority stake break away. They couldn't release any Pokemon games without Nintendo's permission!
Nintendo owns Pokemon but that just means Pokemon must be Nintendo exclusive.
The obsession with having a switch you can take on the go is funny because I know a console that solves that whole problem
Also just make the switch lite the main one and have the secondary be the switch you have at home then there’s no issue because you don’t take it outside
On the topic of making the game artificially harder. I'm curious if either of you tried playing the levels with expert badges on. From when I tried them; the badges do actually make the game harder because of the buff and handicap nature of the expert badges. Especially the invisiblity badge.
2:56 I know Woods is an H3 fan and I love how ingrained their soundbytes are 😂
Glad I'm not the only one who mimics them whenever it applies.
30:06
Hmm, I guess physical media *IS NOT* the answer!
Tell Kim I lover her bears
75 is not a round number, Wood…
It does happen to be quite the nice integer though.
The silver lining of Nintendo putting a stop to tournaments is that all those Smashers can finally go outside and touch some grass
Y'all are gonna have to move to Utah if you wanna get married polygamously. LMAO
Gotta love clickbait
FWIW, hearing you guys talk about how you're blasting through these major releases like Mario Wonder and TotK as fast as possible makes me enjoy your content much less. I mean, to each their own, sure, but I wonder if in creating a business around games you're forgetting about taking time to actually enjoy the games, critically and meaningfully critique and analyze them, and think about the medium. I would much rather hear thoughtful reflection about games and appreciation for them. Maybe rushing through games to be the first to create content about them isn't as necessary as you think. For me anyway I'd rather hear more in-depth reflection rather than superficial reactions. Just my two cents.
Wood definitely did NOT blast through TOTK. he streamed that game for a week straight 6+ hour streams and then even more streams after that.
Bob blasted through Mario wonder for his very first playthrough and stream. He’s gone back and trying to 100% the game on multiple streams.
All of their switch problems are only problems when you’re going against the literal point of the switch. You got 1 system and it goes between a console and a hand held. You don’t NEED to have more than one per person.
Mad how a man with crippling anxiety manages to go across the other side of the world and sit next to thousands of people at wrestling. Ah man, I wish my anxiety was the same as woods.
I'm more than happy to take your switch lite off your hands if you are not using it wood (: my neighbor threw my Switch Lite against the the wall because I delivered his mail that they mistakenly sent to my address. I genuinely miss my Pokemon 🥲
