My grandfather lived in Gary Bottom. He was a coal miner all his life . My parents were married in the Catholic church, Our Lady of Victory, in 1942. I was baptized there in 1943. Momma and her sister went to school in Wilco and Gary HS (yay, Coaldiggers). Grandmother buried in Thorpe cemetery. I have been back to this area many times over the past 80+ years. Yes, it is "almost Heaven."
6:59 They're not foot rests. They're kneelers. You kneel on them and pray. Please don't prop dirty boots on them lol. Catholics do a lot of sit, stand, kneel...(I grew up catholic.) 7:59 I believe this "container" is the ciborium...where they keep the consecrated body & blood of Christ. Yes, it's ceremonial for use during mass.
I was at a lose for what the name was but I thought it was also a wine box? Its been years since I been to church! The last thing Leo jad no clue on was a small water holder for holy water as you enter the chapel !!
I'm a life long practicing Catholic. I've never been in a Catholic church that had padded pews. The foot rests are actually kneelers. We kneel during parts of the mass. The decorated "box" is a tabernacle in which there are consecrated hosts that are the body of our Lord once they are consecrated. I believe the item near the floor is a thurible which is used for incense during high Mass or certain holy days. I couldn't see it well because it was dark but I believe I'm correct. The little metal "bowl" on the wall is a holy water vessel. We use the holy water to make the sign of the cross. Hope this helps. I did chuckle when you guys talked about how large the church was. Many churches in cities in the north east are huge. The church I got married in seats 1500 people.good video. Pretty little church.
Beautiful Church building, love the stain glass windows. Always enjoy your videos, thank you. BTW typical West Virginia roads, hanging on the side of the hill.
Is exactly why I love your page and watch you every day man. Not only did I learn something cool to me like where the head of the tug is!! I'm new to the whole pod casts show things and I work so much I don't get to watch anything like tv. Was so cool after a 12 hr shirt cutting that I got to watch you guy's... keep it up guys. Hope to join you guys this coming up year
Man You bring back good memories in gary👍🏿, my grandmother lived at #7 down the street from Eva's house bed and breakfast all her life until she passed away in 95'....is U.S. steel still in gary that was next to the post office?
There was a house down the street from me that the owner said if you can stay in home for 2 nights, they would give it to you. I watched many people move in start setting up home, then quickly moved out. The story was that the spirit would take things out of the cabinets and the things would be scattered all over the kitchen the next morning. This land site had a civil war home on it that over time was built additions on to it. It is said that a little boy fell into a well and his mom drove herself crazy because she could not get him out. Her husband was off fighting the war. I lived in this area for 25 years near this home, finally the fire department burnt the house down. This land has been vacant now for 10 years, where the house once was there are no trees growing or big bushes just grass that outline where the house once was. Usually if land is vacant trees begin to take over.
Love all old churches regardless of domination. Absolutely love the stain glass windows. Loved this video Leo. I attended a church in Kentucky that was built by a group of people from Dover, England in the late 1900s. Yes, the name of the church is Dover Baptist. The original church burned in 1912, I believe, but was rebuilt using the same floor plans.
I giggled at the "foot rest with little feet" in Catholic service those are knee benches 🤭 The little cup on the door frame is for holy water for doing the sign of the cross
The copper bowl on the wall is for holy water...when you enter church you dip your fingers in it and do the sign of the cross and the wooden box on the table is for communion bread that is offered at the alter!
wow what a beautiful name Gary W VA, think i would fit right in there , then when someone ask my name &where i am from, i could say Gary from Gary lol But sure would love to know more about that haunted house there in Welch love to kno who owns it now & why they are not living in it, that would be a great video to see & hear, & if the story isn"t to scary i could have a free home too lol👻👻😃
Hey Leo I worked with some hatfields from Welch wva do you have relatives from that area I've been to Matawan and Williamson and also pike County in Kentucky use to deliver to KFC around the area many years ago keep up the great videos and stay safe love you all
Just to note, the plaques between the stain glass windows are apart of "The Stations Of The Cross" and there's 14 all together, 6 on each side and 2 somewhere, looks to be in the front but there should be 14 and you would go to each station and read passages from Jesus' carrying of the cross. It's been a long time since our family practiced Catholicism, I find the Gospel Of Mathew a wealth of wisdom and philosophy, that's really all treasures I need to keep in my mind, but yeah probably got a few chuckles about the 'foot rests', well that's just to keep the parishioners from getting annoyed from the constant standing, sitting and kneeling... and standing, sitting and kneeling... and standing, sitting and kneeling, no we just didn't sit and yes it was like geriatric exercises.
Those are some beautiful stained glass windows, and a very beautiful church, I wonder just how old that church is ? Thank you guys for this awesome video 😄
If the rightful owner of that old house made me the proposition of getting it Free and clear if I stayed the night it would be mine. Ain't no such thing as ghosts as far as I believe, even if there was, ain't been no ghost ever bothered with me.
I'm Catholic! You forget the other side of the stain Glass windows! They where Stunning the stools on the pue's we get on our knees when we pray, the the Tall thing is when a child Christing okay the little bowl they put holy water in it to go in Confession then you come out you take your pointer finger an you put on your forehand (i always say you don't forget you go to hell an damn nation) lol i can feel my mama hitting me now!! 😂
In Catholic churches the place where Leo said was a foot rest is actually to kneel on in prayer.
Was just going to complete that ,thank you,and im not even Catholic 😂 but I got a little giggle out of that, him thinking it was for your feet 👣 lol

Love the old church and the stainglass winders just beautiful
That "box" at 8:21 is called a tabernacle. It is where the Eucharist (consecrated communion wafers) is kept.
Thanks!
Thank You!

Not that I know of. And thank you, btw
“Foot rests ” hahaha kneelers to kneel and pray.
What you called a foot rest is actually a knee board for rating.
The things that you think are foot rest are for when kneeling when praying.
They have good highways
Absolutely beautiful ✝️
It sure is
My son was born their
Lawer ballards old house
It's closed now.
THOSE ARE USED FOR KNEELING IN PRAYER

Leo, book that house for us for the night. I'm an inactive paranormal investigator. You and I can investigate it! :p LOL.
Those are some beautiful stained glass windows, and a very beautiful church, I wonder just how old that church is ? Thank you guys for this awesome video 😄
I think they said it was rebuilt in1902, after the old one burned.
Catholic churches dont have foot rests. Those are kneelers, padded to make it more comfortable to kneel in prayer.
Where's the church in Gary ?
👍🇺🇸
"Dead in Jed"... ☠️🚂
If the rightful owner of that old house made me the proposition of getting it Free and clear if I stayed the night it would be mine. Ain't no such thing as ghosts as far as I believe, even if there was, ain't been no ghost ever bothered with me.
Outside walls needs cleaning
