Be very careful when choosing your friends

Be aware of this at all times, your friends should earn the right to be in your friend circle. Too many of you folks just blatantly accept random people into your circle, without paying any attention to it at all.

I am 45 and I know exactly what you are talking about sir. I wish I could get the message you're getting out to more kids. I am so glad I did not fall into the trap of thinking that everything was all about popularity and being cold. At a young age I started believing and things that other people do not believe in and I followed my own path. So many people went down path of addiction and failing and now they are just regular people. Or they are dead. I'm so glad I never cared what anyone thought of me.

In my experience, the toxic influences in our relationships is more of a subconscious fear that gets projected onto you. If I re frame their criticisms from "you can't do that" to "I can't imagine that being possible" then it makes a lot more sense.
I struggled with this for a long time because I didn't want to believe my friends were really meaning to drag me down but that was the net result regardless. In conclusion, I believe their behavior is mostly subconscious and insulated by lack of self awareness.
If I attempt to make them aware of the toxicity, they hostilely reject the notion and respond by trying to gaslight me into believing the fault is mine for having such an unreal expectation. I have tried doing it indirectly so I don't trigger an emotional response and that gets ignored also.
Ultimately there is only one choice, save yourself and leave them behind. Better to have one succeed than to have two fail indefinitely.
